Interested in this Persian Mauser
Its listed in GB by the infamous "sreisel".
After searching CG for any info in this seller, it appears that he gets unusually high prices. Some believe the guy is a scammer. Has anybody dealt with this seller? If so, how did the transaction go? Was the item described the item you received? Thanks for any info. Last edited by SamGoldstein; 04-12-2017 at 1:19 PM.. |

There is much out there regarding the grey blanket. I bought a stock from him via EBay and it went fine. There is a lot of shillery on GB where NR buyers jack up the bids and other such shamalammery.
That is a desirable Mauser, but I can almost guarantee it will triple or better in price by the end. Even in relatively rough shape the Persian Mauser carbine is fairly scarce. I have two of the longer rifles 98/29's and they are superb. |

It's going to go astronomically high most likely. The "grey blanket" effect.
I watch his auctions for fun mostly. Very, very rarely one falls through the cracks. I've bought 2 guns from him. One fell through the cracks in my favor and the other was market price. He was fine to deal with, but did not disclose a stock delamination. I fixed it and moved on.

The Gray Blanket Hysteria is well known and the stories abound.
But its not *always* the case. Consider, i got a great ww1 british navy SHTLE which had gone on to see service in Ireland from him, and he didnt know what it was, and i got it very reasonably priced. also gotten things off ebay from him as well at market. his reputation is infamous, but my personal experience has been ok. he's certainly got an amazing pipeline of stuff going thru his shop, he probably moves more militaria than just about anyone. maybe he's just popular!

The French Section on gunboards used to dissect his French auction and usually call them out as fakes. He got the mods to shut down any conversations about his auctions.
I bought a lebel from him and returned it due to fakery. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Here is the skinny on sreisel aka grey blanket".
He either doesn't know much about the stuff he sells or just doesn't care. Therefore, you have to completely discount his descriptions as misleading or downright false, with a few completely accurate ones peppered in there randomly. Example: Last year I was looking to buy a correct sling for my Swede M94 carbine. Sreisel happened to be in the process of listing several of them on ebay, one at a time. The description of each was identical, meaning he probably examined one or two of them, determined that they were all probably the same, and copied/pasted the description up on each listing. His pics are poor and from what I could make out, it looked correct, so I made the purchase. What reached me was CLOSE, but not the correct sling. I contacted him about it, and he offered me either a full refund, or an exchange for one that was actually correct. I took the exchange and the one I got was legit and correct. His communication is good and he offers to satisfy his buyers with no questions asked refunds, etc. The conclusion is that you need to rely on your own judgement and ask for better photos before bidding. In this C&R world, you will almost inevitably end up dealing with him for some sort of item due to his aforementioned access to such a large supply. Some of his stuff falls through the cracks and goes for cheap.....I would not bid on any of his items past what the bottom of the market is on the item unless you like gambling or you are absolutely sure of your item based on the pictures. |

Isn't there a rule here about no live auctions. That one was on my list. For the record the grey blanket auctions do go high, sometimes very high. Sometimes warranted sometimes not.

I'm only guessing. .. aren't you supposed to sandbag on an auction? Why let everyone know you're looking at an auction ??? You trying to drive the auction price higher?!

My white elephant is on its way. All matching 1935 Brazilian Mauser Short that actually appears to be original and not humped. Which is an oddity for many of his items. I don't think he necessarily realizes many of his items are fake but he doesn't exactly go out of his way to research them either. That's a rare bird to start with for Persians. Plenty of Brno's to be had for cheaper and in very nice condition. For $1000 you can get a very nice one.
Grey blanket is probably a guy who inherited a big collection of fairly blah quality. Never seen anything from him other than the occasional deal like capt got. High prices and nothing that really stands out (just a lot of white grease pencil and bad descriptions) is never a good sign.

The flipping issue isn't too concerning, however, the shill bidding accusation is. How do you know the same item had been sold to multiple accounts?

To think the top sellers don't shill bid ever is naieve. Especially the ones with Penny auctions. GunBroker fees are not very high. It's cheaper to fake sell a firearm at $500 and eat $10 fee than it is to sell a $500 firearm for $10. Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk Last edited by capt14k; 04-12-2017 at 4:48 AM.. |

I recently bid on a grey blanket auction. It was a decent original MAS 49/56 sling. Opening bid was 9.95 (me). Another dollar more would have put it at the same cost as several other sellers who had it up as a Buy It Now auction. In other words, there was absolutely no reason to bid 10.95 on that sling.....but that is exactly what somebody did, at the perfect moment to try to entice me to do the bidding war thing. I was suspicious but I have no evidence to suspect a shill bidder. Of course I let it go. It will be interesting to see if that same sling pops up again. |

Sorry. That was not my intention at all. I have no problem if someone wants to bid on a rifle I want too. I'm not naive enough to think that no one on CG looks at GB. Of course you guys do. So what? My post will not affect the price because if someone wants the piece they'll bid for it whether I mention it or not.

I purchased a Polish marked M95 in 8x50R from sreisel several years ago. Got a good deal but if I recall correctly it took him quite a while to ship it.
Seriously I think that he thought it was just another M95.

There have been plenty I have not seen til the auction was over. At least you didn't link a mislisted rifle, but it was a rare one. If you don't want to spend over $600 avoid the Persian Carbines Period regardless of where made and look at the Long Rifles. I picked up a matching Czech Made Persian Long with 300 rounds of Yugo Ammo for $400 not too long ago. The Czech ones usually run around $600-800, but I have seen them as high as $1,200. The Persian Made ones you can find for $400-800. Also in case anyone doesn't know the best etiquette is to not even post pics of an on going auction. The metadata or exif can easily allow one to trace back to the auction unless you remove it but even then someone can sometimes find the auction using Google image search. Best to wait for the auction to end and if you have questions about an on going auction PM some guys with knowledge about the item. For example I would be happy to answer any Finn or FN-49 questions. The grey blanket has a FN-49 Argentine listed already it is at the high end with 3 days to go. It could be one to keep an eye on for possible shill bidding and relisting.

My 2 cents: PMs are your friend and can often lead to getting stuff before it is even listed anywhere. That and asking for repeat business. My experience is that people that have nice rifles generally have more than one and if they are willing to sell one, they are often willing to sell more |

You are right huntingsocal making connections pays off. I always try and help out a collector and will sell items for less to fellow collectors.
Those are some beautiful rifles SVT-40. I don't know a whole lot about the Persian Mausers but it looks as if the Lions head is turned opposite directions on the receiver is that the case or is it an optical illusion? Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk |
