Best Long range Optic for these 3 price ranges.??
Greetings all,
I have been thinking a lot lately about upgrading my bushnell scope to something better. I think i paid $90.00 or something for it. It holds its zero pretty good at 100 yards. But i would like to upgrade so. Whats the best Long Range Scope for these three price ranges $200-300 range $300-450 range $450-700ish range I know im going to get the "just save up for something better" post a few times but im just asking, if you HAD to but a scope in these 3 price ranges what would you get? Also if you have any links to some good deals please PM me as i am looking to buy. Thank you all for your time |

Except for the Super Sniper line starting at 300.00 there is really nothing else that one could reasonably consider a long range optic in your listed price ranges unless you could possibly find a used Leupy Mk4 or Vari-X III LR in the 700.00 to 800.00 range.

I knew you would say that Im just saying. Timberwolf, if someone broke into your house and stole all your optics, and you had $500 to buy a new scope. what would you get.

I beg to differ. The Bushnell 3200 10x mildot is EXCELLENT for the price. 100 moa of internal adjustment, repeatable, robust, etc. Glass on par with the SS and better turrets. They can be had for around $180 brand new. I've been using one for a while now, even took a PR2 class with it. It works VERY well.

I hadn't thought about them (dummy me since I just bought one for a .22 practice rifle). So in that range we could say SS and Bushnell 3200 10X40 or maybe even a Mueller I've read some good reviews on them from Mike.
My only thoughts on the Bushnel would be it being a 10X - which at 1K could get taxing. With a SS you have the options of either 10X, 16X or 20X - and if this was going to be a dedicated LR scope I'd probably go with the 16X. Mueller is variable in the 3.5 - 10 and 4-15 range I believe. I think though we should qualify the term long range - in most circles 100 - 300 is short range, 300 - 600 is mid range, and 600 - 1000 is long range. If we're only talking <600 that might open it up some. |

$300 range.. Super Sniper 10X Mil Dot without a doubt.
$500 range.. Bushnell 4200 6 - 24X Mil Dot. $700 range.. IOR Tactical 10X MP8. I like 10X and I like IOR.. so you know what I'd vote for. 10X is great for hitting targets from 100 - 1000 yds.. but it's not good for trying to spot your shots on paper at anything beyond 200 yds. Depends on what you want to do with your rifle. |

You didn't say what you consider long-range. Many people here consider 600-1000 yards as long-range, while others call it 100 yards! You also didn't say if you prefer variable or fixed, or whether tactical features are important.
For an affordable, variable power upgrade to your Bushnell that would work well at 100-200 yards, there are quite a few choices. Now, these aren't necessarily going to impress the optics snobs, but they're going to have clear glass, solid construction, and good support, and they'll leave you plenty of money for ammo. Here's a random sampling - there are plenty of others. Under $300 - Leupold VXI, Burris Fullfield II, Weaver V series Under $450 - Leupold VXII, Nikon Monarch, Leupold Mk2, Burris Fullfield II Under $700 - Leupold VXIII, Nikon Monarch/ Monarch Gold, Meopta Meostar, Burris Black Diamond/Euro Diamond, etc. For example, here's a Nikon Monarch 6.5-20x40 illuminated mil-dot scope for $475 that would cover just about any longer range need: http://www.swfa.com/pc-8507-218-niko...iflescope.aspx There are plenty of decent scopes out there for relatively reasonable prices if you're not heading into the sandbox or worried about having the correct tacticool brand name. |

thats some good logic there bro, variable would be cool and if i can get some good tac features thats always a plus too. as im new to the whole optic game i have no idea what tac features are hahaha.. Brand names are o.k. but i have no problem going with something thats not. |

This may not be the most popular answer but I REALLY REALLY like my two Millett TRS-1 scopes. I admit that one had to go back for replacement due to a lense coating issue but they responded quickly with great customer service. The TRS-1 is a 4-16x50 with the target knobs and most current tacticool features. The real bonus is incredibly clear optics. My favorite under $750.00 scope. I currently own two Leupold Mark 4's and two Millets, I just sold my Bushnell 3200 Elite 10x and I have the Burris Fullfield II tactical if anyone wants one. I know some people here are gonna get bent out of shape but the Millet is my favorite off all the above. My leupold MK4 3.5-10x M3 with TMR is maybe in some circumstances have a little better resolution at 300+ yards but it is definately not worth the $800.00 difference in cost. The millets can be bought for around $300.00 and worth every cent.

The 1/8 MOA turrets kill it for me. Thats a lot of twistin'.

clicks
I agree the 1/8th clicks are a negative, However the rest of the scope works great. Especially for the $300.00 street price. I have a couple mounted on Savage 10fp's and have had great luck shooting out to 600 yards. This is one of those cases that you get more than what you pay for.

Most scopes will use 1/4 clicks so for every MOA of adjustment it would be 4 clicks. With 1/8 clicks you basically double te clicks. You will probably also increase the amount of turns to get to a specific elevation. My currect load and rifle will need 22.75 moa to get to 865 yards. That is roughly 2 turns of the knob. With 1/8 I would guesstimate 4 turns to get to the same number.

1/8 MOA clicks mean that you make 8 clicks for each MOA of adjustment.
If you need to adjust up 6 MOA, that's 48 clicks. That's a LOT of clicks. 1/4 MOA is more the standard. My Leupold M3 that you saw on my Remington 700 actually has 1 MOA clicks on the elevation turret. Remember how I showed you that it stops in one complete turn? That's FAST, but not as precise as 1/4 MOA clicks. 1 MOA at 600 yards is over 6" so I don't have nearly as precise an elevation adjustment as I would sometimes want.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Burris Xtreme Tactical series.
They have a 3-12x50mm with mildot that can be had for under $700. 300mm tube and side focus. While I have never handled one in person, all of the opinions I've read of it say it's good glass. http://www.burrisoptics.com/tactical.html Plus, I respect Burris products. They make good stuff.
