Default Congressional Scorecard: where does YOUR rep stand?

I just got off the phone with a staffer (Lou Penrose) for my Congressman - John Campbell. He represents Irvine, Tustin & Newport Beach in O.C. He wouldn't give me a straight answer about whether his boss supports a national semi-auto ban or a magazine capacity limit. When I tried to get an honest answer out of him he became belligerent and hostile. If any Calguns members have Campbell as their representative they might want to call in and hold his feet to the fire on this topic since he has an A- NRA rating. Good luck.

Well he can lose that rating quickly and go to Fail To Answer.

I'm pretty sure we're gonna be Scoreboarding....

I think this is a great idea - let's pin down our California reps.

I'm sure your representative wants to hear from you.

Please call, have a polite conversation on your end (let the Representative or staff say what they need to say, just remember it), and

report back with a post in this thread,
with date and time, whose office you called, who you actually talked to, and what you talked about.

If you don't have any other ideas, ask whether the Representative supports a national semi-auto ban or a magazine capacity limit, as CitizenX asked Campbell's office.

Don't worry about duplicates - every constituent is important.

Here they are:

If possible, we should do this at the state level as well, for both our state senators and our assemblymen. I'd like to see a list similar to the one above so we can work on pinning down who is on our side with regards to both Yee's SB 47 and de Leon's SB 427 (I believe this is the correct number)

Default I gotta start reading the paper sooner ...

CCTIMES, front page, Dec 19 - headline story is where they asked all the CA House of Representatives (does not seem to be on-line at the web site, though).

Question asked: Do you support re-enacting the Federal assault weapons ban that was in effect from 1994 to 2004?

32 Dems - YES: Bass, Bera, Brownley, Capps, Cardenas, Chu, Davis, Eschoo, Farr, Garamendi, Huffman, Lofgren, Matsui, Negrete-Mcleod, McNerney, Miller, Pelosi, Schiff, Sherman, Swalwell, Thompson, Waxman, Honda, Napolitano, Sanchez -46, Sanchez -38, Takano

(That same group, less Brownley and Sanchez -46, who did not answer, answered NO to "Do you believe citizens have an inalienable right to own weapons like the .223 Bushmaster rifle, along with multiple 30-round magazines?")

1 Republican - NO - McClintock

14 Repub - no response

6 Dem - no response

When you call, you might ask why they think a law that had a 10-year trial with no measurable effect seems like a good idea now. See http://www.sas.upenn.edu/jerrylee/re..._final2004.pdf, "Impacts of the Federal Assault Weapons Ban, 1994-2003"
Quote:
3.3. Summary
In sum, AWs and LCMs were used in up to a quarter of gun crimes prior to the 1994 AW-LCM ban. By most estimates, AWs were used in less than 6% of gun crimes even before the ban.

Is there a thread that helps with the kinds of questions to be asking and concerns to be raising? I've never really gotten involved in politics until now. Thanks!

I interned for Calvert. Just because they say one thing does not necessarily mean their votes will reflect it, although Calvert's record generally leans in the direction of 2A support. I learned that quite quickly when addressing issues to constituents. It was many parts mind numbing and irritating.

Lobbyist/Special interest group ratings are meaningless. In this day and age it is either pass or fail. Because people put so much weight into who is for who that they have to vote the [national] party line. Which btw is why Republicans are not competitive in California, taking cues from people like Rush Limbaugh as if he decides who is in and who is out. Anyway the same A rating for a rank and file member is the same A rating for the most vocal member and vice versa. It takes into no account as to whether how enthusiastic or to what degree someone will support or reject a cause.

Just sent an Email to my representative Gary Miller. I told him that the issue is fundamentally moral and that gun control only stops those who are lawful from acting lawfully.

George Miller. He was in front of a microphone before the little bodies had been removed from the school bloviating about the need for more gun control.

So this is annoying...

When using "Find your Representative..." on the US House website, I get Rep Duncan Hunter (R-CA) after putting in my Zip+4. When I'm directed to his website and put in that same Zip+4 so they can verify my address it says I'm in another district and it won't allow me to go through his contact page.

Try without the +4? Not many people actually know theirs.

Strange, that worked to get past the check even though the ZIP splits 2 congressional districts.

Thanks for the assistance.

I called Campbell's office a few days ago, they referred me to the DC office, I left a message for a woman there who was said to be their 2nd amendment contact, I have not heard back yet. I sent an email today. A friend from HS and College works in the OC office, I will forward your message to her.

I will get a straight answer out of John, I know him personally and will get a meeting with him when possible.

Just got off of the phone with Darrell Issa's District office. They told me he had not made any public statements regarding this push for more gun control. When I asked if they were getting a lot of calls about this issue, they said Yes, a fair amount. I asked if they were keeping track of the comments, they said Yes. When I told them I thought going after the instruments of the violence instead of the the root causes was not going to change anything, he laughed (almost sounded relieved), and said most people calling were on the "other" side. He thanked me for my call.

I just sent an e-mail to Rep. Issa. It's too late to call his office. I plan to follow up with a phone call after Christmas. I'll post his response.

I'm going to write my Rep. Honda but I'm 99.9% certain I know his response. Liberals can be so predictable.

Emailed Brian Bilbray, will let you know his response.

The public cleaned house on those who supported the bailouts, we will see a full Republican majority in Congress in 2016 for anyone foolish enough to vote for a restriction on 2nd Amendment rights.

Can we get a general letter going to send to our representatives? Like the ones we did for SB249? This way we can start getting the word out to the reps to not mess with our rights. Thoughts?

This is a good idea, we need action like this. Are there not any guns rights foundations that have such prepared letter sending campaigns? Perhaps they are waiting for more details on what might be apart of proposed legislation.

I did send this short letter in to my local Rep, feel free to use it as template or edit it how it suits you.

I am writing to express my extreme concern for my 2nd Amendment rights. There is discussion among the President and Members of Congress for a ban on "Assault Weapons" and taking other measures to limit the types of firearms available to Americans today.

The 2nd Amendment was recently interpreted by the Supreme Court to extend to all firearms which are in common use for self defense. Semi-automatic rifles, incorrectly labeled by the media as "assault weapons" are clearly authorized by the 2nd Amendment, both in the SCOTUS's recent ruling in DC v. Heller as well as the idea that the Framers of the Constitution had that the American people retain their right to bear arms- not only for personal self defense, but in defense of a tyrannical government.

Mr. Campbell, I urge you to not support any legislation that restricts the types of firearms available to Americans. Specifically, any attempt to ban or limit semi-automatic rifles (incorrectly termed "assault weapons") or high capacity magazines would be a serious infringement upon the rights of law abiding citizens.

I am available to consult with you on this matter if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Default I am glad folks are doing this

On Friday I emailed senator Feinstein via her .gov website, and on Saturday did the same for senator Boxer and my congressperson in the 53rd.

Of course I urged them not to support/suggest an AWB

Just sent Rohrabacher an email and will call his office after the holidays, granted I'm pretty sure he stands with us on this issue.

Will post his response here.

Agreed. We need a coordinated effort on our part to scoreboard our Congressmen. Further, a general letter that is approved by the NRA and Calguns would be ideal. We've got a lot of people to contact but if we could streamline the process it is doable.

We can kill this bill if we do it the right way.

Y'all keep up the great work....you're an integral element of the liberty and freedom broadhead.

Hello Gents and Ladies. This is my first attempt to get involved in calling or emailing my policy makers. Thank you for the resourceful information. Is it possible if someone can give other members a phone call script and a email/letter template to write our politicians.

Thanks.

I contacted Feinstein (telling her not to persue her legislation), Boxer, and Anna Eschoo (14th District).

I already have a copy of the responses from past letters.

Default I know where my reps stand

I sent letters and left messages with Feinstein, Boxer, and Brad Sherman. I know what the response will be, but the effort must be made.

I will urge all my gun owner friends, LE partners, and former MIL members to get involved.

That list needs to be updated to reflect newly elected representatives. For example, I'm no longer in the Conservative Dan Lungren district. I'm in the Socialist Ami Bera district, but I think Brandon and Bill are okay with that.

The 2nd Amendment is not about hunting or competition shooting. It's all about your inalienable rights to life and liberty.

I have contacted my Rep Judy Chu several times. I will continue but it's frustrating in that she is a committed anti 2A socialist I was in a phone chat conference with "random constituents" and I asked her about the Second Amendment. Her answer was that it was to protect hunting but since now we have evolved and can go to the store to buy our meats we really don't need to hunt. I mean she is openly anti gun.

Bilbray is a lame duck, Scott Peters is coming in to replace him in the new congress.

I am just wondering if the gun owners here in Calguns who are members of democratic party will stay with the party if ever Feinsteins' bill passed into Law.

I sent my letter to Rep Duncan Hunter. He has an A+ from the NRA... He's been silent these past few weeks openly. I hope what I and other constituents have written to him elicits a good response.
