Default Got My Beeman R1 .20 Cal. Back from Overhaul Today...

...from Bob/Tom over at Air-Venture in Bellflower.

I furnished the parts.

New Air-Venturi:
- Mainspring
- Piston Seal
- Breech Seal

And they did the Service tune-up.

The Mainspring was a little over-spec, fewer/heavier coils, but that is what was available.

They did a wonderful job. It really shoots nice - better than new. No vibration or buzz. Trigger tuned to ~ 3 lbs., and breaks like an icicle.

They were nice enough to chrono it for me:

Beeman orig spec.:
Beeman
09.8 gr. Silver Bear: 860 FPS

Rebuilt:
Beeman
09.8 gr. Silver Bear: 922.5 FPS / 18.42 Lb-Ft

930.3
915.6
931.6
922.6
912.4

Benjamin
14.3 gr. Cyl Pellets: 720.4 FPS / 16.48 Lb-Ft

728.1
723.9
714.3
725.8
709.7

So, now it's a Beeman R1 .20 Cal.+P

Will range-test this Wknd for accuracy.

Like an Italian Ferrari mechanic... wouldn't turn it over until it was purrrring.

Bought the rifle new from them in the late Eighties...

Great guys.

Marksmanship training for the boys, and tune-up for me, w/ a little pest control on the side.

Got a 60' range set up in the yard.

In my opinion there is very little of anything to recommend about living in Southern California. Bob Newman over at Air Venture, and Tim Mcmurray at Mac 1 Airgun, two remarkable fellows with shops a stone's throw away from one another, make residing in the hell of SoCal tolerable.

Out of curiosity, what did the service cost you?
And +1 on MAC1, they did a steroid tune on one of my Sheridan silver streaks. I don't have chrony numbers but it throws the Eunjin heavies through gallon jugs of water and into a 2x4 a 1/4". Took about three months to get it back, but well worth the wait.

Air-Venture Service was $65.00 Labor, and I furnished the parts... Plus a tip for the Ferrari Mechanic.

Was the Midway deal for the Ben/Sher's? If so, hows the accuracy? Some people swear by them. I've never had good results with those pellets....it's either HN FTT's or JSB exact Diabolos with the best results in any of my airguns.

Right now, w/ iron sights, they are shooting ~ 1/2" groups center at 20 yards, using a 2" ring and 6-O'clock hold, both bench and off-hand, w/ my eyes... which is good for me.

Expect better w/ the scope mounted, and will post range results.

The CP's require a fairly high power rifle.

They were designed for the Sheridan Pumps, and the skirts are heavy, requiring a lot of pressure to drive them into the rifling.

My R1, right before the overhaul, w/ its tired mainspring and leaky breach-seal, was shootin'em all over the place. Now, as stared, ~ 1/2" groups.

Sad news.

Happened by Air-Venture the other day.

By chance was driving down the boulevard and glanced over as always...

Looked to be closed.

Yelp lists it as CLOSED, and a post notes that Bob is "gone."

End of an era.

Any news RE: this would be appreciated.

Wow, sounds like you got a great rifle now. The numbers are really close together and grouping is right on.

Enjoy
