How do people clean semi autos where the action doesn't open like a FAL or AR?? Don't want to damage the muzzle / crown.

Use a muzzle guide. It is a tapered device that goes into the muzzle and has a hole for the cleaning rod. The ones I have are brass

Isn( it a worry about pushing junk n dirt up into the chamber if you use a rod n patches. Can you use a bore snake?

As long as your cleaning rod isn't steel you should be fine. If your cleaning rod is aluminum, brass, or has some kind of rubber coating, than the only damage should be on the rod.

I was taught that steel rods may cause damage by friction against the barrel directly. Softer products may pick up grit which can become embedded in the rod, and the grit will cause the same sort of damage. I suggest a bore guide no matter which end you clean from. They minimize the contact between the rode and the bore, and in the case of bore guides that attach at the breech end, prevent gunk from going into the action. Most of the harm from cleaning rods are occur at the end of muzzle where slight imperfections may affect the bullet as it exits the muzzle.

If you have to clean a semi auto say like a Garand then either a bore snake or a Dewey type coated rod would work along with a muzzle guide.

FWIW, Although I'm no sub MOA shooter with my C&R rifles (never claimed to be one), I don't clean my match rifle at all. I cleaned them ones when I first get them and that's all the cleaning it will get till before it leaved my custody permanently to a new custodian. I know what I'm feeding them so no harm of nasty corrosive primers or excessively dirty powder. If you look at the bores of the rifles I shoot matches with, they are clean and with the just a little carbon and copper and the bores still shine...all of them. I lube them the necessary lube points but that's about as close to cleaning they will get. They still work!

Use an Otis kit. It uses a coated stainless steel pull-through cable with brass hardware.

Run the rod down the barrel then screw on the bore brush in the action. Pull out, chamber to muzzle. You can also use string trimmer line and poke it through a patch as a pull through. Heat and flatten the end as a patch stop.

Sold on here for 20$ sometimes. I got one from another user, Coyote tan, has MOLLE straps. Works for 5.56 and 9mm.
