Default URSA: We start shooting at 2000 yards.

It was suggested we post here rather than (or possibly in addition to) the Centerfire Rifles, Manually Operated forum. We'll try and see.

****************

URSA will have shoots in SoCal (Barstow area) and NorCal (Clear Lake area) on Sunday, Jan 17th.

We start shooting at 2000 yards (and change). All locally-legal rifles are allowed.

More info on our website. In particular, check out the Operations page.

Those interested in the NorCal shoot should contact the Regional Director for CA/NV, Lynn Dragoman, at rd-southwest@unlimitedrange.org

Those interested in the SoCal shoot should contact the Facilitator, Oscar Leckliter, at webmaster@unlimitedrange.org

Than balance of the schedule for Q1 2016 is:

NorCal – Feb 14, and Mar 13
SoCal – Feb 28, and Mar 20

The SoCal Feb shoot has been rescheduled to 2/28 (4th Sunday) to accommodate shooters that have conflicts on 3rd Sundays. Since the 4th Sunday in Mar is Easter, that month's shoot will remain the 3rd Sunday, 3/20. Depending on attendance in Feb, we MAY change the regular SoCal shoot to the 4th Sunday - except for those months that have known problems (Nov and Dec in 2016).

That is some serious distance! I have done 1000 and that is the limit for my 308.

Just curious, what are the general mix of rifles/calibers that compete at this range? ...other than 50 BMG.

Actually we have seen hits with 6mm Creedmoor (smallest).

So far those that have shot the best (min 5 hits in a 10 shot string at 2000+) have shot 7mm WSM (2), 300 WinMag (2), 338 LM, and 50 DTC - see the Stats page - http://www.unlimitedrange.org/stats.html

ka:

As I noted, it's been done with a 6mm Creedmoor (by a talented shooter). Dip your toe and see if you feel like going further. We're here for the long haul. There are a number of folks that are actively pursuing heavier weight hardware builds because they got bit. Try it, you might like it enough to go further (pun intended).

I am/will be in! This looks cool, but my next few weeks are tied up with instructing, :-) teaching intermediate distance under 500 M at the Kingman range first week of Feb.

I need to buy a rifle. What kind of scope is common for this?

Can you spot misses at that distance?

I just checked out the website, sounds right up my alley. I have never gone out to 2000 yards, but have done a mile. Doubt I can make the feb event, but count me in for March.

I'm too afraid to come out because I know it will pull me into the next realm of LR shooting. I can't afford more hobbies...

Yes, but there is a marked advantage with a larger projectile. That's one of the bigger problems for small caliber shooters.

Are you guys shooting ultra log range using video to spot shots? I've seen some cool camera setups that are live time so you can see the target without having to get out and change targets and what not. Pretty cool tech.

Excellent! Happy to have you shoot with us.

Scopes - seems most are in the roughly 5-25x50 or x56 higher-priced class with as much elevation MOA as you can afford...plus more MOA in the scope base/rings. See the "Rifle..." spreadsheet on the Stats page for what those that have shot best are using - http://www.unlimitedrange.org/stats.html At this point all those shooters shot in NorCal. We've had a few 4 in 10 in SoCal but no 5 in 10 or better as of yet.

Yes, definitely! I can only speak for SoCal but down here we will have at least a couple of decent spotting scopes on the line to help shooters know where they are at. Also, the time of flight is such that the shooter can frequently spot their own through their scope.

No, we use IRIS hit indicators - for us an array of 4 very bright LED lights. See http://www.rtacprecision.com/i.r.i.s..html (3rd pic down on the left). When you hit the steel the IRIS sensor mounted on the back of the steel transmits a signal to the light array (about 20 yards to the side) and that triggers two pulses (light flashes). VERY easy to see..and shout about. We have two systems in SoCal and 4 in NorCal. Also very cool tech and quite effective.

Ah...not quite sure how this thread turned up becoming a sticky but that basically makes it invisible as being something people will look at when they come to a forum. I basically look right past them after first coming onto a forum and seeing what is in this group of threads. This info will also be updated at least monthly.

Moderator (or whomever moved it to a sticky), please move it back to a regular thread.

Thank you and God bless!

Oscar

The SoCal shoot for Jan 17th has been cancelled due to insufficient shooter sign-ups.

Back in Feb.

I just heard from my smith that my BAT EX action is due to come in at the end of the month, about 8 months ahead of schedule, although the 408 CT bolt is still about a year out. So I might have my 50 Cal a lot sooner than I thought. Time to start looking for glass...and order a McMillian Super 50 BR for it.

See the Centerfire Rifles - Manually Operated sub-forum for "URSA NorCal To SoCal Match At 2100 Yards" this is for the 2/28 shoot in SoCal - http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s....php?t=1159769

I'm interested, but I probably won't be able to make a meet until April. I start the 10 day tomorrow for a rifle that should do 2k+, I, however am probably only good out to 100 yards. So, I saw the spreadsheets said "pre novice" I'm just wondering how pre I can be without wasting everyone's time.

Adverse:

"Pre-novice" means the shooter is working on (accumulating targets towards) the first achievement level, Novice. For Novice a shooter needs to score at least 5 hits in 10 consecutive shots on 5 targets during qualifying, record, or achievement rounds.

While practice at the longest distance you can find (in advance) is strongly recommended, its up to the shooter to decide whether they want to try their skills and gear at 2000 yards and beyond. You are most welcome to join us. Our schedules are posted at http://www.unlimitedrange.org/activi...0schedule.html

Folks:

This is a Sticky post to give a brief intro to URSA. Please start other threads.

BTW, the BAT EX is a min $2500 action (almost totally used for .50 BMG class work) - which can be ordered with a CT bolt face.

A BAT EX with 2 bolts (50 BMG & 408 CT) and a few extras was about $3,000. Initially they told me there would be a 1 year wait, but I guess they decide to make a batch a little sooner. The 408 CT bolt is still a ways out, apparently.
