Default Self Defense Stats

Hi everyone. Random request / question.
Has anyone seen any information on carry permit holders who have had to use their weapons legitimately in CA, and what has happened to them?

I keep hearing people at work saying stuff about how in CA, you will probably be presumed guilty (siting the mostly liberal views of the state), but I have not been able to find any cases where legit self defense has gotten anyone in trouble.
Anyone have anything on this?

CA doesn't collect stats that way; local agencies are not required to report that info to any central point.

ETA TX, MI and FL do collect that data - but you asked about CA. Very low incidence of crime by CCW holders in those states, and no reason to assume CA CCW holders are worse in that regard than CCW holders in other states.

I've been saying that for years ...

There is no value at all complaining or analyzing or reading tea leaves to decide what these bills really mean or actually do; any bill with a chance to pass will be bad for gun owners.

The details only count after the Governor signs the bills.

I have a friend (really) who obeys basically every law except one... he carries a 9mm and has never had a permit. Keeps a backup in his truck too, like not in the manner prescribed by law.

I've told him he's nuts and should get his CCW. His response and I'll quote to the best of my recollection... "If someone tries to shoot me, I'm going to pull my gun out and kill him. When the DA asks why I'm going to tell the jury that he tried to kill me so I killed him instead. He can try me for carrying without a permit, but it doesn't change the fact it was a lawful shoot."

I'm not sure how that would go down, but he might be right. Like you OP, I haven't been able to read of any real cases on this that would test his theory. There has been cases like perps running away and the homeowner shooting them in the back on the way out of the yard, and that went down like you'd think. Not a threat, not a legal shoot, this isn't Texas or Florida.

John Lott does good work. I doubt there's what your looking for, though.

For 225+ examples of CCWers, see my sig line (sure, the first 10 or so are old/pre-net). IIRC, a few of them are from CA.

The NRA has it's Armed Citizen column online with private gun usage (not just CCWers, but homeowners, business owners, clerks, etc) too.

That's pretty nuts. I imagine the odds of him being caught versus needing to use it would be tremendous.

Indeed. And he's probably one of the best known guys in the San Bernardino mountains, I mean everyone knows this guy (or knows his name). Add to it he's in Berdoo county so getting a CCW is merely a matter of applying and waiting a year-ish. I've talked to him about it and he just feels it's his constitutional right and there's no infringing upon it that is acceptable. I can't argue with his logic, but it's not a risk I was willing to take.

Thanks. I just skimmed through the CA ones on this list. Looks like none of them (good guys that is) got jammed up by LE for defending themselves.
