Having talked to Burns custom about this...as I love the idea and am an old school .38 super fan...bigtime....buy a 9mm luger gun and then just add the barrel... the Springer has the small firing pin so is an ideal gun, esp. the target sight gun, lose the full length guide rod, put the 9x23 barrel on it, and spring rate change and you should be good to go.. but then you said project so I'm thinking you have other motives...

seen this?

Ok, you have me here. Why "lose the full length guide rod?" All my compettion firearms have full length guide rods and with 100,000's of rounds through them, there is no problem.

It's a personal thing... I hate guns that I have to use tools to take apart.. and I compete with my working guns...

I never understood the "race" gun competition thing...
I shoot what I carry every day when i compete, or I shoot something I haven't shot in years just to see how I do when I pick it up fresh after a few years of sitting in the safe only being wiped down occaionally...

so.. with my springer 9mm's i just threw the guide rod in the box and the box on the closet shelf and put the short length rod in just like JMB and God hisself intended....

so like my springer 9mm is in my bag, I just got home from teaching a ccw class again, and the 9mm is loaded in my bag with federal HP ammo and is a happy boy cause it gets shot alot... alot alot...and mayhaps someday I'll get a 9x23 barrel fitted if I can find a couple of thousand rounds of winchester silvertip cheap...I love that round in the 9x23 (which I used to shoot in my kimber 38 super)
