Default Any members of Oak Tree Gun Range? UPDATE Post #40

How do you like it? Are the pistol ranges crowded on the weekend? How is the staff?

Also, I heard they have a membership sale during Black Friday in the past. Any truth in this?

I have a family membership at Firing Line and shoot there with the wife about once a week. Its close by so really convenient. Nice group of guys that work there. However, distance is limited and I can't shoot my AR.

What have you heard? I only know a couple of folks that frequent Oak Tree and they seem to like it.

Just a few cases.

Iím sure all have nothing to do with the range and/or personnel.

Iíd worry more about the copycats who are on the fence & looking for a convenient place to spend their last moments. The views are peaceful though.

Wow. I know this stuff happens. Just never knew its so often and so close to home. I don't read the news much so I never knew about these incidents. But it validates my uneasiness when the range is crowded. We don't shoot or leave when its crowded. Just too risky for me.

I have been a member for the past 5 years. I avoid weekends, crazy crowded. I think it is a great first rate range. Quality ranges for handguns, both paper and steel. A great shotgun set up both skeet and trap. A 100 yard rifle range, ok, nothing great. Very polite staff both in the sales area and on the ranges.

A very nice quality club house restaurant that serves first rate burgers. Nice to enjoy a burger and beer after the guns are put away.

All in all I am very pleased. I can usually be found on the pistol ranges most Thursday afternoons trying to out shoot my two friends to see who buys the burgers and beer.

I am aware of several suicides/attempts in the past several years. I guess that goes with the territory. Close in to a major metropolitan area. Certainly nothing to do with corporate policies or staff.

In the past they have had a 1/2 price or two for one membership on Black Friday. I have always renewed then.

The range staff has always been polite and helpful.

I am not a member, but Oaktree is where I shoot.

It is "the cleanest dirty shirt in the pile," and I would say that it is several magnitudes better than the alternatives, if the alternatives are an outdoor range like Angeles Shooting Range in Sylmar, or an indoor range like The Target Range in Van Nuys. Oaktree is a beautiful facility, and the staff are not too moronic. The weekday crowds are usually manageable. (I do not bother to go on weekends because I assume that every range will be a mess on weekends.) So, the short answer to your question is that it is the best range that I have found in my part of SoCal.

A Place to Shoot is not too far away from Oak Tree. Its a hidden gem in my opinion. Not too crowded on the weekend mornings.

If you want to shoot guns APTS is much better, i only go to oak tree to shoot my bow on occasion.. oaktree is expensive, small, crowded, lots of first time shooters.. think of it like a tourists gun range..

Interesting. I've never heard of APTS. I just checked their website. Looks like a good selection of ranges and the membership for the wife and I is reasonable. We can actually pay for it and our membership for Firing Line for the same price as Oak Tree.

The website says they have a member only range. Is it a paper or steel target range? Does it have the usual range restrictions or are you allowed to draw from a holster and stuff?

Quite a few people talk smack about Oak Tree and there are quite a few valid reasons why. However they have done some improvements and it seems the word is out about their reputation going through hard times. I am a member and shoot skeet 2-3 days a week. If you really want to join, wait until November when they usually advertise a special which is half off the regular membership price. If you shoot a lot of pistol an rifle, it's well worth the discounted price. If you only shoot shotgun, you would need to be shooting a lot to get your money's worth IMO. I will typicaly shoot 300 shot shells a week so to me it's worth the price. They also have a Friday night special for trap and skeet. At the moment it's $5.00 per round.

I don't live in the area but have shot at both and way more prefer A Place To Shoot. The only time I would go to Oak Tree is if A Place To Shoot would be closed.

I never understood choosing Oak Tree over APTS if both are an option. Especially after the Armatix smart gun debacle.

I heard they got new ownership so not sure if the Armatix thing should still be held against them if thatís true.

I have no dog in this fight, in a different part of the state.

but

doesn't indicate a change of ownership

Thanks guys. I'm gonna check out APTS this Saturday. I have to go out to SCV for my neice's kid's birthday party so I will go shoot before and check out the place.

Guys, if you want a serious rifle range, super chill and often self-RSO'd by the members(on weekdays), with a decent pistol range, separate black powder range, and several disciplines of matches offered on weekends, Desert Marksmen. It's not that much more of a drive than APTS or Oak Tree, depending on your location. For me, it's actually closer. Did I mention it was super affordable?

Talk about a hidden gem. I've been a member for about 8 years and I freaking love this place. Especially now that some of the members have set up semi-permanent steel targets every 100 yards (out to 600) at the rifle range. Cannot say enough good things about this place. Check it out.

Besides my children and friends I left behind when I left SoCal, APTS is the only thing I miss about the place. Tom and his staff are first class and the ranges are well kept and fun to shoot on. They don't have a formal trap or skeet range just clay throwers but that is all I could hit anyway. They do have a five stand clay course that is challenging. They have rifle steel out to 400 yds, pistol caliber steel at 30 yds, paper for both rifle and handgun...just a really fun range. I belonged to it from the very beginning and really miss the folks there and the range itself.

I tried to join Desert Marksmen about a decade ago but could never get in touch with anyone so I gave up. Seems like a nice range. APTS was only 20 minutes from my house.

I was also considering Desert Marksman but it's a bit further out for me than APTS. DM was recommended by a member to that I was chatting with at a LGS.

The initial membership fee is $100 at DM. Goes down to $60 if renew by the deadline each year. And that's for everyone in your immediate family. From what I gather, it's a private range. Only members have access code to get in the gate. Open 24/7 for members and allows overnight camping. Also, sounds like there is no staff, no RO. That's good and bad. Cool that you can do some practical shooting there though.

There is an orientation meeting once a month. If you want to join, you basically show up to the meeting and go from there. I still want to check them out. May be worth joining just to have a place to go practice stuff you can't do at public ranges.

You must live in Palmdale. LOL. It sounds great and I will check that out, but it's a little bit of a drive if you live in L.A.

Look into Angeles Shooting Range, it's not as bad as you think and in your area, weekdays are usually very light.

Oak tree seems to have severely limited hours of operation. No Mondays and Tuesdays for pistol and rifle. The 100 yard max range for rifles really hurts. I was wondering what you guys were talking regarding APTS. That place used to have a different name a few years back. I went up there and asked questions about the range. The staff were real asshats to me, they seemed bothered by my questions. Some of the locals gave me a strange look when I pulled up. Desert marksman requires an NRA membership, damn it.

I agree but I have seen some real questionable people at the range. The kids who work there don't know a whole lot, as a result many get away with shenanigans that would not be tolerated at a more well managed range.

I believe is still same family. If totally non related to the old ownership I'd like to see evidence of that.

It has been A Place To Shoot since it opened in the early 90s. So join the NRA already.

I like the range. It's well run. Great fun store to browse shop. I had membership there for a year but it was too far for me to keep the membership going. I had to settle for Angeles range.

Before Angeles Burned, I went there quite often. I liked the fact that its all paved, and other than the dust blowing off the range itself its very clean. A Place To Shoot on the other hand is very low key, and as long as no one drives in really fast and stirs up a lot of dust, its nice as well, however not paved at all . So if its windy, it can get dirty. I have never been to Desert Marksman, as the other two choices are much closer. Since Angeles Burned I understand they have porta potties, but I'm sure at some point, the rebuild will include regular Bathrooms as before. A Place To Shoot will continue to have porta potties, because there is nothing permanent. I believe it is on Leased Land. I hope this helps

The shooting lines at APTS are concrete with overhead cover but there is no water on site, it all has to be brought in. Porta-potties are the best you'll do there. Yes, when the wind starts blowing on the rifle line you may get a face full of dust. It adds to the charm!

Thanks for adding the additional detail. I have stopped getting into specifics anymore because it seems most of the time the decisions have already been made.

How are the pistol ranges? That's what I shoot primarily.

Two pistol ranges:

1 with movable target stands to 25 yds and some steel swinging plates further out; 2nd is steel only about 25 yards. 1st handgun range allows all pistol caliber and rimfire caliber handguns and long arms. 2nd range is handguns only, no magnums.

There is also a steel plinking range about 30-35 yds that you can shoot handguns, rimfire long arms, handgun caliber long arms, and shotguns (no slugs).

Do yourself a favor and go to APTS, you'll like it.

The pistol/steel only range is now closer now, maybe 10-12 yards max. They recientaly paved and put an awning over it like the other ranges so that shortened the distance.

Thanks for the info fellas. I'm heading there for sure this Saturday. Gonna check it out before my nephew's 2 year birthday party. Looking forward to it. Will report back how I found the place.

Bob's a good guy. Always busts my balls by pointing out my flyers.

Hey guys. Update.

So wife and I went to APTS today. We checked out the first 2 pistol ranges. Nice little setup. Clean and nice array of steel targets at both. Best part... my wife and I were the only ones shooting. On a Saturday. At 11AM. Really nice.

The guys working the check in booth were really nice folks. Answered all our questions. Friendly and engaged in friendly banter with me and the wife.

I was excited to see they they allow drawing from a holster and other stuff at the 2 member only ranges. Now I just have to see if it makes sense for us to join. It would require us to make the drive 10 times together to make it worthwhile. No problem if its the only place we shoot but it won't be. Have to weigh it out.

I give the place 4.5 out 5 stars just because there is always room for improvement. We will definitely be back no matter if we get the membership or not. Liked it much better than Oak Tree.

Oh...Warning... if you map it on your GPS, it will tell you you've arrived about a 1/4 mile before the actual place.
