Default Best ammo for Mosin Nagant in So Cal?

I'm new to guns and this site. I did a fair amount of research on buying and whatnot but was over excited when buying my ammo for the new Mosin i just bought. I currently have 880 rounds of steel core 7.62x54rs lying around that I can't shoot in my area.

So my question is what ammo is better for So Cal for (no steel core, bi-metal, and steel casing) this particular rifle? And if possible I'd like to find the cheapest one around. Thanks guys

well a Mosin will probably eat anything and ask for seconds. but some ranges don't like steel cased or Bi-metal ammo. find the cheapest brass cased stuff you can find and enjoy.

you can shoot this
http://www.sgammo.com/product/prvi-p...prvi-partizan-
http://www.sgammo.com/product/prvi-p...-partizan-ammo

it depends on where you live if you can buy ammo online and ship to you.

Wink Ukrainian 7.62x54R 147gr TMJ

Palmetto State Armory just delivered me a 440rd spam can of Ukrainian 7.62x54R 147gr TMJ, for only $76.99 + shipping.

The TMJ bullet (Total Metal Jacket) is allowed in most indoor ranges because it completely covers the bullet; no lead particles go into the air. But I think it's probably a bi-metal jacket, so some outdoor ranges won't allow it (sparks when it hits metal or rocks).

LA county is generally okay; it's the City of Los Angeles that is an issue ordering stuff. If you live in the City of LA, the first thing to do is move if you want to have guns.

Its been pretty dry out these days, weeks, months, years. Wait until we get some rain and just take it out to BLM land south of Ridgecrest with your ammo

If your address says Canoga Park and your zip code is not the same as a LA city. You should be OK.

Did you know last year BLM made steel core bullets illegal to shoot on BLM land

So as baih777 suggested I checked this one out.

http://www.sgammo.com/product/prvi-p...prvi-partizan-

I forgot where I saw it but there was a review about it where the rounds didn't fit properly in the Mosin. It could have just been that specific person's rifle but not sure. Any thoughts?

Default cheap to shoot

i joined the west end gun club last year, i can shoot anything but tracer ammo or armor piercing. it is only 5 bucks to shoot all day if you become a limited member for 65 bucks a year. it is a first class range and safer than public ranges.

Man... I wish I could go there easily. I'm willing to drive 10-20 miles to shoot my gun but that's a bit too far for me. Sounds like a great place though. If I ever head towards I.E. I'll definitely check it out.

The PPU and Prvi Partizan ammo is pretty much the least expensive you will find in brass cases (based on my searching around). Anything costing less is typically the steel cased, corrosive, surplus stuff. I'd still buy the surplus and store it away.

Discount Gun Mart usually has a few boxes of the Winchester 7.62x54r

Other than that, I buy from Buds. They offer paper cases of 20 for TeamBuds members (just the surplus stuff disassembled, but at $5 a pop they are nice on my wallet when I just have a few spare dollars)

I've always wondered if I can load 308 bullets in a 311 barrel and I read a lot of stuff online about sluging bores or improvised 308 collet dies for 54r brass. It's only 3 thou, what can go wong?

Just for you OP, I tried it yesterday. It worked and was quite surprised at how accurate it can be. So I mexican match 5 steel case with m80 surplus, 5 with 168Amax 5 with 175smk. All seated to max length(finger pushed in, with virtually no neck tension). At 50yrds, m80s ~5in random grp, that's to be expected. 175, little high and to the right ~2in grp, big difference. 168 amax, first 2rds were touching, wow, rest of 3 opened up to less than 2in. Wow, no kaboom, no abnormal thump or twang in the firing, am thinking longer bearing surface helps. Next up, get some real brass and powder and try again with 168amax.

Brown Bear

Inexpensive and allowed at Lytle Creek. They just look at the box and say its ok. Dont know how closely at the bullets inside though
The people know someone is shooting milsurp by the sound. As far as bimetal no problem there either. That's all that's allowed there.
WEGC is very nice but if you have a small car going across the wash can be a PITA

If you want to shoot 100 yards or more youre going to have to take a drive. 25yard indoor ranges just aint the same.

Thanks for all the comments guys, especially dw1784 for trying out a ballsy move. I just gave in to buying some PPUs and went to Angeles shooting range.

I still have a lot to learn about guns in general but I'm really excited to just shoot the damn thing!

This is not true for all BLM land, just certain areas in SoCal.

How was your experience at Angeles? As a new shooter, I'm looking for a place to take out my M44, and ammo isn't a concern (have a spam can, but I also grabbed some PPU to shoot). Anything you'd recommend or advise?

PPU ammo is good to go. I've shoot them out of my Mosin and can hit the 200 yrs steel targets at Angeles.

Since it's raining, call Burro Canyon up in Azusa. They allow bimetal ammo after a good rainstorm. Just call to confirm first so you don't make a futile trip.

Good call on Burro, forgot about them since it's been ridiculously dry, prior to this week.

.
Pretty much any 900.. (City of Los Angeles) zip is red flagged for ammo shippers.

It's funny how that works. When I lived in Culver City which is completely surrounded by Los Angles city, I could have ammo mailed to my address. Zip was 902..

Have fun with your classic rifle!

:-)

you have to decide on where you want to shoot. if you want to goto a shooting range most require non steel core which is what most all surplus ammo is. if you want to goto blm and shoot buy surplus if you want to goto a range it will cost you more

When I went I had a decent time. Didn't get bothered by the guys working there and they were kind enough to inform me of some of my faults. They definitely check your ammo but once they see you have PPUs (at least in my experience) they'll just leave you alone.
