Sounds like we can get something rolling

But where is the closest place to take the trash ?

What would be best / A weekday or weekend date for a clean-up ??

Weekend would be best for more helpers. Right down Cajalco is the Temescal Canyon dump. About 20 miles from the range. I went up there this am to check it out. Certainly needs some clean up, but nice to see a place to do a little shooting just 15 minutes from my house. I have a few friends who will help out also, a few are CalGuns members.

Now I need to find a referral to Maywood. I kinda like the camping under the trees part.

On another note, My friend who owns CSA is going to try to contact Bill's wife and see what he can do to help get the Rock pile re-opened sooner. I also have a neighbor who would donate backhoe time if that will help them too.

I know this is short notice but would anyone be up for a cleanup at steel peak tomorrow 8-4-12. Me and the family were thinking of taking a drive up there to fire off some rounds and blow off some steam.

I was just up at the BLM land right behind where Maywood Gun Club is (where the fire mentioned earlier was). There is a NEW BLM Land sign posted on the dirt entrance. It IS currently a OPEN Shooting area. However, IF people do not start cleaning up after themselves they will close it down.

The girlfriend and I always clean up our stuff. And did what we could to pick up a little. But there were some "new" shooters that did not seem very safe. We did what we could to help them shoot better, and more responsible, but there was a slight language barrier.

Is there anyway we can maybe get another get together an clean up in this area? I enjoy shooting here, it is not to far from me. And we usually have a great time up there. Friday and Saturdays are best for me and the lady. I can bring rakes and bags/buckets for brass. And have a Sporttrac I can get a little in the bed to.

I don't understand why it's so hard for people to clean up after themselves but this is the consequence for it.

I will try to get a group of guys to go out there on either a Saturday or Sunday and I will post here when I get a date set.

Not sure where Steel Peak is. I just found this thread, when looking for help to keep Maywood area clean.

Could you PM me the location? Might like to check it out if it is close, and do a little clean up while there.

My Brother, friends and I went shooting here this past weekend.. Alot of trash is an understatement. Plus we had people shooting off the Boulder Rocks next to us - Like Hello!!! (ever heard of Ricochet) . I'd hate to see this range get closed - 25 min. away. Count me in for a clean-up, Can probably bring a couple of more bodies to help.

Spoke with the guy from the blm and he made it very clear that they will be shutting it down if clean up is not done. We really need to let everyone around us know that they need to clean up. The last few times I was there the biggest problem besides trash was the excess amount of spent shot gun shells everywhere.

Is anyone interested in a cleanup either saturday 8/11 or sunday 8/12? If so lets see how many people we can get and we will work something out. It would really suck to see this area get shut down. We will have to be there early as the place fills up pretty quickly on weekends.

When my group goes, we always pack out WAY more than we took in. That's the way to do it. Simple.

I was planning on going up this weekend to help clean a little, and maybe shoot. If I do it will be for a little bit on Friday Evening, as I just got called to do a Fireworks Show in Lake Elsinore on Saturday, and I return to my normal job on Sunday. I hope to be able to get up there for a bit an get a early start for you guys.

I was thinking about this problem and realized we may have allies we haven't tapped into. The Boy Scouts are usually interested in doing service projects and clean up of the outdoors and typically prospective Eagle Scouts are happy to have suggestions for their 100 man-hour service project required for the rank. If we all could contact our local Boy Scout troops I'd be willing to bet we can get volunteers to help us clean.

What could be better than making new allies and teaching a new generation of shooters?

That's a great idea.. I personally don't know any Boy Scouts but any help would be awesome. I'm down to help when ever possible.

I have never been shooting at this area, I live about an hour and a half away and have a couple places less than 20 minutes from home but I thought I would lend a hand anyway, hate to see a spot get closed down.

I can come this weekend with my truck and help if some of you guys are going to be there, early morning is best for me. I have a place to dump near home for free so I can haul out whatever fits that won't blow out on the freeway. I can bring some trash cans and bags to fill up.

I also made some phone calls to BLM today, got in touch with a nice lady that is in charge of clean ups. I told her about the clean ups that Eat Dirt started in Bee Canyon and how the US Forest Service gave Calguns a Certificate of Appreciation Award. I sent her links to the Bee Canyon thread and the "Calguns gets an award" thread and she is going to show the head honcho for this area. I let her know that there are guys from this thread wanting to do the same at the Perris area. I asked about putting up the "Cleaned Up By Calguns" signs that Eat Dirt started for when we clean up in Bee Canyon and she is going to show the head boss the links that I sent her then ask, she said there is a possibility.

I asked about getting a law enforcement ranger out there to keep the range cold during a clean up and she said if we make plans and have a date 3 or 4 weeks in advance she can probably make that happen.

She also said she will get some dumpsters out there in October or November for a big clean up if we can get a bunch of people together. LEO will be there then also to keep the range cold.

She has my email and phone # and will contact me in advance of the Oct./Nov. date so I can post the info here.

Man... I just saw the sign that the BLM put up about the possibility of indefinite closure due to hazardous conditions due to the trash people leave behind.

Whenever we go, we always pick up after ourselves and even donate our spent casing to those who always collect them for recycling.

Its a shame that people keep bringing their appliances, crates, TVs to shoot up there and leave them behind.

I've been shooting there for quite some time now and would hate to see it shut down especially only living like 5 minutes away.

In my opinion, problem I think was the over broadcasting of this place creating more visitors of which most may not be Calgun members and are not consciously aware or courteous enough to keeping the place clean.

If we can get a clean up crew together just like the last time when there was that big green giant trash container, i'd be down to sign up.

I have been told by most of the people I have met out at this location, that area Firearms Shops have told them about the spot. Even met some young guys from Newport Beach, that their LGS told them about the area.

The girlfriend and I go quite often, have yet to meet a fellow CALGunner, have met some fellow NRA members, who are always cleaning up after themselves. Seems to me, the younger guys, the punks, and the ones that don't speak much English are the ones that are leaving the mess.

Since my plans were changed for this Saturday, if that date get setup with the LEO and dumpsters, Count me and a few friends in. SO long as I do not get a last minute Fireworks Show. Work does come first. Or any other weekend for that matter.

Those that are going this weekend, be careful, I heard it will be a hot weekend, I was told to expect 110-120 in Lake Elsinore for my Fireworks Show.

I was there this past weekend, SPEEEDRACERR was kind enough to take my Kids and I out there. We had a great time and would hate to see this place shut down because of those idiots who don't clean up after themselves. My kids and I would definitely help clean up if someone gets this organized. We live in Victorville but are willing to travel to help out. I want my children to continue shooting for a long time.

Well sounds like we can get a bunch of guys together. This weekend looks like a horrible idea since this will be the hottest weekend of the summer. I am all for getting everyone together and I think we should figure something out for a week or 2 out when its a little cooler. I have a short bed truck and can hual some stuff. I am going to go pick up some buckets for spent brass and some trash bags for spent shot shells. If anyone does any welding maybe we can get some rebar trash bag holders out there to dump trash and casings into. I would love to see this area designated as a Calguns clean up and shooting area.

I had not seen the news for a few days and just saw the forcast and it will be a hot one this weekend. The next weekend I have plans but in 2 weekends (sat the 25th) is good for me.

I might stop by this saturday morning early on my way to Corona to check it out and grab a little crap while it is still cool.

We have found out after doing a bunch of clean ups in Bee Canyon that trash cans are best. You can cary them all over, lay them on their sides and rake stuff in till they are more than half full and if they get heavy 2 people can grab a handle to get it back to the truck. We can put bags in them and slide the bag out when they get to the truck that way we can stuff as many bags in the trucks as possible.

I have never been there but have a general idea where it is, I worked just up the road for years doing house pads in Gavilan Hills and drove by the road to the old gun club every day.

Can someone please PM me the distance or directions from when you turn off the 2 lane road?

I can see if I can get a few 32 gal trash cans donated, as well as getting a few friends for extra man power. Just need to know when, too bad this weekend will be way too hot...

My 14 year grandson and I went there this morning to shoot, we took trash cans, trash bags, rakes, shovel, 3 shotguns, rifle, etc. However, once we entered and passed the new BLM sign, I told him that we weren't going to shoot because of all the debris. I told him that if "Ranger Rick" from BLM came by and saw all that trash that they would be closing down this site. He and I cleaned up by the entrance several months ago and we couldn't believe all the spent hulls, etc. He's a BSA {Boy Scouts of America} and we received a email from the female down at Palm Springs {BLM} regarding the clean up and I notice that several others have inquired about getting the "dumpsters"...I'm going to contact the grandson's Scoutmasters and as others have mentioned, the scouts could earn alot of Service Hours Credit for cleaning up the area and I'm also going to check with BLM about the scouts having a place to shoot there and camping out also.

However, I want to know if BLM will have a "ranger" there during the clean up because I'm ashamed to mention that some of the shooters we have seen shooting, that I don't want any youngsters shot or anything else while they were cleaning up this site so shooters can have a place to shoot. Why in the hell anyone in their right minds would bring old TV's out and other crap and shoot them up. Come on! I'm going to ask BLM if they would leave one of those Giant Green Dumpsters so most responsible personnel could put their trash in them instead of letting the trash blow all over the place. I remember shooting for years out by Gilman Hot Springs turn off on Hwy 60 and then the bikers and fellow shooters started leaving the trash, local residents complained, the Riverside Co. Sheriff's Department started issuing tickets and another site got shut down.

I'm sorta surprised that the Maywood Gun Club next door hasn't complained to BLM about the problem of trash, etc. I do feel that the idea{s} about the Boy Scouts getting Service Hours is a GREAT IDEA and will contact Troop 156 {here in Riverside} Scoutmasters regarding their help in cleaning up the area and then having responsible personnel there if the boys wanted to shoot after clean up. I took a bunch of pic's this morning but I don't know how to post pictures here, but a 14 year boy and a 72 grandfather spent 4 hours and we can't believe how good it looked with what we did, now if 2 can make a "dent" at this site, think what a whole Troop of Scouts would do and other shooters. Lets not lose another shooting site to irresponsible people...

Hey Gordon, That is totally awesome what you and your grandson did. From us responsible shooters to you - it's MUCH appreciated. I'll be out there this Saturday around 8:30ish to do the same. I'm getting the phone number off the BLM sign and give them a call, and see what can be done about us cleaning with out worries of being shoot. Maybe look into getting a section closed off to public while cleaning is being done.. I think if they (BLM) know were serous about cleaning this place up they leave it open!!

I'd like to go and help as well. I can't make it this weekend though, 1 -2 weeks from now and I can be there. I live in the area and it'd be good to find a new place to shoot and some new people. I've got a short bed truck, a trash can, bags, and rakes...

PM me the exact spot, please, when a day is picked. I'm pretty sure I found it on google maps (sadly, by comparing the photos of the junk collected during the BLM clean up with the satellite map photos...who leaves a mess so big it's literally visible from space?)

Going to be out there Sunday afternoon to clean up, and shoot a little. Just have an SUV, and possible have truck with us. Anybody willing to come out, or planning to already be there that can lend a helping hand that will be great. Will be in a silver SUV.

I'm new to Calguns and I do shoot out there about twice a month. Count me in on Saturday the 25th. I have a small truck and it would be great to meet some of you and keep the area open.

I will try to get a group of guys to go out there on either a Saturday or Sunday and I will post here when I get a date set.
I can imaging some stupid idiot moron shooting up that sign thinking it would be funny. The sign is missing something though...hmmmm...maybe "your mother doesn't live here so pick up your sh**!"

I met Mongo up there a few months back before they had the last BLM clean up. We did a good deal of cleaning up the place. It sucks that its back in a poor condition even after the last BLM clean up. People are just slobs.
