Default AR10 precision build, match barrel recommendation

Gentlemen,

Wondering if there's a new rage in .308 AR10 barrels in a match grade lately... I'm sort of familiar with Krieger, have heard a lot about them in the past. Looking at them or Wilson Combat.

This would be for shooting matches, up to 500-800 meters. Any recommendations would be outstanding, I'm starting to collect parts for an Aero M5 (DMPS pattern) build.

Thanks in advance!

Have you considered going with a 6mm or 6.5mm Creedmoor instead of 308 Winchester?

The Creedmoor cartridge works great in big ARs, and since you seem to be of a mind to use a premium barrel like Krieger, Bartlein, Douglas etc, a gunsmith can just as easily chamber your barrel for these cartridges as 308. Just get a blank with the right bore size, contour and twist rate.

Proof Research, JP, or Krieger would be first on my list.

not sure what type of match you will be shooting if weight is a factor, but i would take a look at criterion hybrid contour stainless barrels. Ive come to the decision of putting one of these on my 6.5cm build with a matched bolt. So we shall see.

If you have any questions about Criterion products or need any questions answered regarding component compatibility and build fitment feel free to give us a call at (262) 628-8749.

Either Michael or Josh should be able to help answer any inquiries on that front. Best of luck with your upcoming .308 AR build project!

Thank you all very much for the input, it looks like I have some research to do!

I will happily share the build when completed so you can all see what I came up with.

Prost!

Jimmy, no I haven't other than NRA High power matches or matches of similar format. I'm after a solid, modern match grade platform (within a humble price range of course) I can use in varying match formats shooting long distance. Hadn't thought of a different chamber to be honest and having a custom made barrel is an interesting option. 6mm PPC? Little knowledge of either of those calibers but one reason I like .308 Winchester is simply the commonality of the cartridge. I've never been a fan of exotic cartridges in terms of availability but I load now so that obstacle is quickly disappearing.

Criterion from Fulton Armory. They also have a couple Kreigers. I would love to try a proof carbon wrapped one but my goodness are they pricey.

I've not seen it done and it might be possible, but 6mm PPC probably would not feed that well out of an AR-10/DPMS-308/SR-25 magazine. It is best to stick with cartridges that have the same rim diameter and similar body length as 308 Winchester, which the Creedmoor case has.

6.5mm and even 6mm Creedmoor these days can hardly be called exotic. You can probably find factory loads in these calibers at Walmart.

If you don't want to go the custom gunsmith route, you can still get a Krieger AR-10 barrel in 6.5 Creedmoor from Fulton Armory.

I found these two posts helpful in thinking about the "308 vs. X" debate:
