Default AB-1192 Firearms: retired peace officers. (2017-2018)

http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/fa...01720180AB1192

Quote:
SUMMARY:
Exempts retired Level I reserve peace officers who meet specified length of service requirements from the ban on possessing high-capacity magazines

Author's Statement:
According to the author, "The California Reserve Peace Officers Association and the author,
consider the omission of honorably separated Level 1 reserve peace officers from the availability of the exemption for fulltime honorably retired officers to be a technical error with an easy fix.
"AB 1192 offers a proposed amendment to section 16690 on an urgency basis, to become effective prior to July 1, 2017.
Absent language amending section 16690 to include honorably separated Level 1 prior to July 1, 2017, there would be no provision for those affected officers to retain presently owned high-capacity magazines for the firearms they have been authorized by law to carry as honorably separated Level 1 reserve peace officers."

There's a shocker, more retired LE carve-outs.

2016 was "the year of the Gunmageddon", and now 2017 is officially "the year of the retired peace officer exemptions".

Interesting... within the bill revisions, the bill changes from simple majority (50%) to pass, to 55% needed and now to 2/3 needed to pass.
It might not pass.

Equality is a false concept invented by the human animal, as a feeble attempt to (try to) justify an inferiority.

Anyone know of a reasonable means of becoming one of these special classes of more equal citizens?

I have skills better used in a different field and I'm too old to start the academy anyway.

Are there auxiliary/reserve/volunteer opportunities? I'd pay out of pocket for background checks and training if it allowed me to have the same constitutional rights as the rest of the United States.

I don't really know, but I've been somewhat curious about this too. Contact your local Sheriff's dept, I'm sure they'd be happy to let you know what you could do to help them out, but I'm not sure if any volunteer positions come with any of the LE legal perks. I think you have to actually be POST certified and employed as a LE officer to get those perks.

LE exemptions can be convenient if you have a decent relationship with one.

Perhaps for off-roster pistols, but it won't help Joe citizen keep his legally owned standard capacity magazines after June.

As is better ammo availability, assuming you have a decent relationship with someone out of state.

I tried to have a relationship with an LEO but he told me he didn't feel that way about me, and that he was still giving me a ticket for speeding, and to put my shirt back on.

This is the right way to think. In the long run, the more retired LEO exemptions the better.

No, but these retired LE exemptions tend to underscore the fact that the restrictions have nothing to do with safety. I have to requalify with each handgun on my CCW every two years. Do retired LEOs have to do the same?

And do retired LEO's have a genuine heightened need for larger magazine capacities than us? A reason why they would need off-roster pistols more than us?

Really, the only reason retired LEOs "need" any of these things is so that their union will support whichever candidate gave them the exemptions.

Actually we have to qualify EVERY year with each weapon we chose to carry. Of course we have been doing that for years anyways...

Yes. You must qualify yearly with each handgun you wish to carry. Failure to do so could result in the loss of your CCW privileges.

I have friends and neighbors that are retired LEOs and they are as opposed to the gun restrictions as we are. I also have friends that are active LEOs and they are equally opposed to the gun laws coming out of Sacramento. So, I think that your brush is a little too wide. If you need more proof just look at the map showing the shall issue or nearly shall issue counties. When you notice that most sheriffs fit this category, it is hard to paint with such a broad brush.

Well, as long as they oppose it while buying their hi cap mags, off roster pistols and carrying wherever they want. That makes it much better.

I also have LE friends, both active and retired, who are very pro 2A and against CA gun control.

However, I believe they must ALL be held to some accountability for the actions of their unions whom they support.

It's a "cop out" (pun intended) for them to just say they don't support what their unions do, when their unions are only able to do what they do by virtue of the support of the LE members themselves.

BTW, the Sheriffs unions were among the few who actually voted against many of the LE exemptions, so their support for CA civilians is not in question. As for the rest . . . not so much.

The LE Unions voiced their public displeasure because the recent gun control bills in the last several years Did Not, include LE exemptions.

At which time the legislature changed the wording of the bills to include LE exemptions for their faithful servants. The LE Unions showing appropriate fealty to their master's generosity. Immediately switched sides and gave support for them.

Their [LE Unions] support of Ca "citizens" in the political 2A arena, is not only in question. It is dismal and totally self serving at the expense of the citizens that pay they wages, benny's, and pensions.

I'm sure "gogohopper" will be along shortly with supporting cites.

Until there is a sea change in the attitude of CLEO, what the average rank and file grunt thinks is completely irrelevant. They're an impotent non-issue. Nothing they say or do has any effect, politically.

As I factually stated in my post that went "POOF". That does NOT APPLY to all retired LE. Requirements are set by the Dept an officer retired from.

Many Depts. Have to qualify with the same "TYPE" of handgun you carry CCW. If you are going to carry a revolver, you must qualify with "a revolver". Then you can legally carry with Any Revolver. Same is said for semi autos. NOT specifically the same handgun you qualify with.

My father retired from the LASD in 1979 and retains his CCW with no additional requirements. He also retains all the perks of a retired LEO. He did mention that the LASD changed the requirements for younger retirees, but that he is great grandfathered.

This is one the Supremes have already declared to be a problem. Even the liberal justices hate separate classes of citizens.
