Default What scope are you AK owners using?

I bought a new O Pap, already put the mount on but can't decide which scope to get. I want conventional scope with magnification. I dont shoot tactical but more medium to long range accuracy. So what do you guy use?
thanks

I use a Burris tac30 on my Bulgarian 74 build & I love it.
I shoot irons on my OPAP, but I think the Burris would do well there also.

Whoa pardner, i didnt want to spend that much, lol and i wanted something a little longer range, that looks like a tactical scope(tac30). I have an EEA PAP too i shoot iron sights with, it just made sense for me to go optics on the O PAP since it came with the side rail for scope mounting.

Scopes, red dots, and the like have no place on an AK.

Using a scope on an AK is like using a micrometer to mark a chainsaw cut.

Find a surplus Romanian pso-1. They were around $125. It's 10 times cooler than a "tactical" scope. It's a 1200 meter sniper scope.
Check your siderail, Opap only accepts svd-style side mounts.

Currently running an el cheapo red dot (Primary Arms Aimpoint Micro ripoff) on my AK but when I get around to it, I'll probably put one of those Leatherwood / Hi-Lux 1-4 power scopes on there.

I know a lot of folks like the POSP series but I had a fixed 6X POSP on my .308 Vepr for a while and thing was an absolute tank. Weighed the rifle down something awful. I ended up selling it.

You might try the Pilad VOMZ 4X on your AK if you can find one. Much lighter than the POSP but every bit as rugged. I had one for a few years (actually came with my Vepr when I originally purchased it) but I stupidly sold it some years later when I needed money.

Here's the scope I'm using on my latest 308 build OP...

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/383...-reticle-matte

I've been waiting forever to pick up one of these on sale, and finally bought one from a fellow Calgunner for $350 BNIB. Is it overkill? Probably. Am I more than excited to have this piece of glass on my "battle rifle" build? Hell Yeah!

If you want to mount up an optic I'd either go red dot or 1-6x mounted on an RS Regulate since you can adjust the rail to sit perfectly center over the bore, and lower 1/3 CoWitness a reddot.

Good luck.

Leatherwood CMR or check out some of Primary Arms optics. If you want to shoot long range than get another rifle. The AK in 7.62 x 39 is really only effective to about 300 yards. The Close/Medium Range Leatherwood mates up perfectly to the AK. Mark Krebs, an AK 'expert' runs the leatherwood CMR on some of his AK builds.

I don't have this (yet), but Primary Arms just came out with a scope that has a bullet drop reticle for 7.62x39 (NICE for AK, SKS, SAIGA, MINI 30, ...) for $250

https://www.primaryarms.com/Primary-...a1-6xakser.htm

Targeting one of these for my vz.58 when they are back in stock.

For those who say optics have no place on an AK.
Take a look at almost every picture of Russian soldiers in the current Ukrainian conflict. They would tell you (in Russian) how wrong you are...

Mine (well my Brother's now), runs a Vortex StrikeFire and magnifier. I also had good success with a Vortex LER 3x scope.

I think it really depends on the AK. I have one that I built from a Romy kit with an 80% blank. Took my time and built it with good guidance from some of the AK guys in the LA area. Built the real scope rail onto the side of it, no cheap dustcover mod.

I can shoot chunks off 5/8 thick rebar at 100ft and it is good for pie pans much farther than that.

And I know some loose non matching AK's are lucky to hit minute of strawbale at 100 yds.

Try shooting your opap and let us know what happens. Even the reviewers from your link said this is for standard ak/non-yugo siderail.
Hopefully it works out for you.

I guess my siderail isn't specific to yugo, or they made a change in the Opap rail. Honestly i dont understand the question, the side rail went on just like any other rail. If its on, its going to work. There is no play in it and its mounted securely.

I don't think the 1-4 AR Scoped would work. Believe they need to sit forward more.

IDK, I am seeing a lot of iron sights in this video. In fairness to your claim, I believe Putin said that the masked gunmen weren't Russian soldiers.

mtnman, I've got a vepr pioneer in jail and I, too, am looking for a scope so I can have a better sight picture at 300 (likely max).. I'm leaning towards a POSP because the reticle is geared toward the x39 and I want to try out their version of the range finding aspect of their scopes.

Let those of us with the courtesy to give you a non facetious response know what you end up with and how you like it. Enjoy your opap!

Mine is on a MI rail. Eye relief is spot on with NATO length stock.
Featureless Bulgy 74 build,10/30 circle 21 mag.

With all due respect.
There is a REASON modern AK variants come with a side mount optics rail...

It's a well known fact that the AK 47 is one of the most accurate precision rifles ever produced. Look into NF and USO

Dimitri, I was able to get an order in the recent batch - looking forward to it for my vz.58. I've got the zahal receiver dust cover rail - what scope mount do you suggest and will I need a deflector of some sort?
