Hi all

Where's the best / cheapest place to get bullets?

I see .355 and .356 on different sites.
Ideally I'd prefer plated or even polymer coated (no exposed lead since I shoot indoors), but everywhere I look, including shipping it runs about 8 to 10c a bullet. Add 1.7c for powder and 2c for a primer and its about 14c a round all said and done, which doesn't seem that cheap considering I last purchased new at 16c a round.

Any tips on where to get decent bullets?

To piggyback on this. I have used Xtreme exclusively for my 9mm and 45 rounds but want to change it up for my next bulk purchase.

Are the Hornady 124s (or 147), and 230gr projectiles a decent choice? I purchase Hornady for all projectiles I reload for except for my handgun.

10 cents a bullet is easily beaten by shopping online for deals.

You can use 0.355, 0.356, or 0.357" jacketed or 0.356, 0.357, or 0.358" lead bullets (slug your barrel--9mm barrels vary more than any other cartridge).
1) Try Precision Bullets for swaged and coated bullets. 125gn L-RN case of 3500 bullets for $236 (<7¢ a bullet).
2) Try Precision Delta for real jacketed bullets that are both accurate and inexpensive (when you order 2000+, they are the same or less than plated). 9mm 124gn FMJ-RN for $176/2000 (<9¢/bullet--same as X-treme, but with the accuracy and consistency of jacketed).
Sorry, but with primers running 3¢ each, you have to get the bullet price down.
Of course, you'll have a hard time finding 9mm ammo for much under 25¢/round.

A lot of good options already mentioned. I’ve had great success with Precision Delta 124 JHP. You get better pricing when ordering 2000+ bullets at a time.

Bayou Bullets is my first choice and has a 10% Christmas sale going on now. I have an order on the way of 8K+ 9mm/38Sup, 45, and .40cal/10mm bullets. Including shipping ($45) the price per is only .07, but if it were just 9mm, they would be closer to .06 per.

The cheapest and best bullets are coated. I've use several manufacturer's coated bullets. Including Bayou, Blue Bullets, Galliant, SNS, Missouri Cast, and Acme. I have no complaints about any of them. They all shot great. Acme is by far the cheapest when you buy in bulk. By bulk I mean 6000 to 10000. My last order was for 8000 9mm and IIRC I was 5.2 cents a bullet......

PS. Coated shoot much better than plated. They are less sensitive to crimp which is very important when loading mixed brass on a progressive. Coated are every bit as accurate as jacketed bullets.

I use Berry’s for .38 Special, they work better than Extreme too... YMMV

Fact is...this is the time to buy 9mm, not reload them.

Use regular lead bullets. Nothing wrong with those.

Try summers bullet. They run 4.5 cents. U can’t beat that ever.

A lot of reloaders also cast their own lead bullets.
This eliminates a good chunk of the cost per round when reloading.

There is a startup cost issue but it will pay for itself with all the savings from not buying bullets. Each shot you take you are saving $.08 - $.10.
That adds up pretty quickly.

I'd recommend it. It is very satisfying to melt down some lead into a mound of usable bullets, then loading them up and shooting them.

Most 9mms work better with cast/plated bullets sized to .357. Some even recommend going to .358, unless the chamber won't accept a loaded round with .358 bullet.
It's generally accept that cast, and coated cast, are more accurate than plated.
However, since the OP needs a "lead free" bullet style , he's better off getting plated sized to .357 and go from there.

115g 9mm plated 250 count berrys is 28.99 at sportmans wharehouse. Sure u can beat that in bulk but i can go buy them go home load them up shoot them and by more before the online order shows up.

As someone else said, in times like this you buy the ammo and save the brass. In your comparison above you're essentially paying 2 cents each for once fired brass. When ammo prices rise, you can load again.

Way back when, 7.62 milsurp used to be cheaper than the cost of components to reload. I never even bought a set of .308 dies.

I run Hi-Tek coated lead from ACME and buy in bulk.

OP, why is powder 1.7 cents per round? That's also high...

FWIW, I reload 124gr 9mm for 9.5 cents per round and 147gr 9mm for 10.3 cents per round. It's all about buying when in sale and stacking deep.

Have you tried Zero Bullets v.s. Precision Delta? I have to go through some Xtreme & Zero's before trying something else but I'd love to try P.D. next time.

I have not used Zero, PD’s are priced right and work great. I’ve heard great things about Zero, but in the past availability has been an issue. Montana Gold bullets are highly regarded too.

7000gr /lb = 1000 rounds per lb.
at $23 + tax = $25 / 1000 = 2.5c (i got the 1.7c if u use no. 5 with about 1300 rounds per lb {5.6gr}).

Your problem is you're buying one pound of powder at what looks like retail pricing plus tax.

If you put a double charge, even of titegroup, in a case of 9mm, you'll notice. I have done it just to see what it looked like (obviously didnt load it, just for visual) and it is inmistakeable.

My question is what machine are you running that you're afraid of a double charge?

My guess would be a 550

You can use a lockout die on a hornady or 650 to help eliminate a doubecharge.

If you're using a single stage, a visual check Aand you should be fine.

Buy powder online. Best way to get it cheaper. But make sure you purchase enough to offset the hazmat or wait for no hazmat sales. It's cheaper to buy by the 8# jug in most cases. You'll get avg of 1300 larger caliber (.308, 30-06), 3000 .223ish loads, 8000 ish handgun loads out of an 8# jug. Plan for the future. I reload for precision and plinking because its "easy" and why be at the mercy of the system now with the regs. Stock up and stack it deep people say.

I bought pulled 40gr ballistic tipped .223 from eliteammunition for like $17+ship for 250 I think it was...
It is all about timing, and we usually post deals here when they are found, and after the "deal-finder" get's his order placed...

I have also gotten Remington .380 frangables and loaded in 9mm, which were on clearance, and they shot fine too!
