The only two I'm aware of are J&G in Granite Bay and the guy at JustGuns.

I haven't used either and each time I thought about doing so, it turned out to be cheaper and faster for me to buy the appropriate tools and do it myself (M1 Garand Barrel Change, AR-15 FF forearm install and 1911 sight install).

I think The Gun Range guys either have or are getting a gunsmith on site. I'll ask again next time I'm there.

If Seth says a gunsmith is good, it's good enough for me and my babies...

I think I'd heard that elsewhere... Also, J&G seems to have crazy stupid pricing. They wanted $300 to install a used barrel and check headspace. I could have shipped it off to a Garand specialist and had him do it for $150.

I spoke with The Gun Range gunsmith last time I was there (forgot his name). Haven't used him so I can't say anything about his work, but like everyone else there friendly and easy to talk to.

I've used this Glock armorer a few times and have been satisfied every time:

A lot depends on what service you need. I'm sure there are some true smith's here that will chime in. Many of the so called gun store gunsmith's should more appropriately be called armorers. Swapping sights on a pistol, adding a rail or changing a barrel on an AR-15 are not tasks that require a gunsmith and just because there is one guy in the shop who figured out how to use a vise and wrench doesn't make them a gunsmith. I've talked to a few "gunsmiths" who were unable and and not knowledgeable enough to perform moderately skilled services.

Duane at Sierra Gun Supply in Auburn (530) 823-9113. I've only used him once but the trigger work he did on my varmint gun was great and his rates were really good.

Just got back from Steve up in Grass Valley to work on repairing my IAI .45. Philippine manufactured 45). Was looking to replace a plunger tube and spring and got MORE than I bargained for. Did a fabulous job removing burrs, dremeling parts that were problems (thx Steve for this), removing every single part to clean, and was a great price. Would not hesitate driving nor paying for quality workmanship like this.

T&T Gunsmithing in Rancho Cordova. Did a very nice trigger job on my Mini-14, mounted a scope - all prices very reasonable and work very well done.
From the looks of things (I saw 1911's, hunting rifles, black guns) he's capable on a wide variety of platforms.

Does any one out there know where Mike Thagen of Sierra Gun Works went?
He was a very skilled gunsmith working out of his shop in Pioneer.

Default Sacramento area gunsmith

My son is currently setting up his gunsmithing business in Roseville. He is a graduate of the NRA gunsmithing school at Lassen College and has been doing some interesting projects lately. I've attached some photos of a Saiga-12 conversion he did recently, but he has some interesting other projects he is currently working on like an AK-74 from an 80% lower and a bag-o-parts, and building a receiver for a CETME/HK .308, which involves machining parts and turning some on a lathe. There is also the ever popular AR-15 from 80% lowers that he does, as well. If you are interested, you can reach him at bballardgunsmith@gmail.com or at (916) 671-9702. His name is Brennan Ballard.

Ed at EWG Guns Inc. 5913 Horseshoe Bar Rd. Loomis, Ca(916)652-4867.
Just dropped off a cylinder to have blued. He sends that stuff out, but works on guns in the shop. Don't know much more than that.

Sportsman's Gun Room in Penryn also does light gun work. (916)652-2220

Duane at Sierra Gun Supply in Auburn (530) 823-9113 is very good also. He's replaced a front sight and bluing on my Browning HP.

If you have a gun that needs the best of the best there is no finer than this fellow. http://www.camhills.com/dale.htm I met him this weekend up at Camanche Sporting Clays and Hunting Club this weekend and had the pleasure of meeting him and checking out his little shop. He studied under James Purdey & Sons in England for five years.

I also had the extreme pleasure of meeting Charles Lee. Charles is a world renowned engraver. He showed me his shop and some of the work he has done on guns, shotguns, cars and anything else you can think of that can be engraved.

You certainly can't lose with this winning combination.

At NorCal Tactical in Roseville there is a gunsmith named Jim that does good work. He rebuilt my 1911. Pricing was very reasonable.

Earlier this year, I had a Ruger GSR that was unfired but felt rather loosy goosey in the action, with inconsistent feeding out of the magazine. Being my first bolt action & unaccustomed to the play in the bolt, I checked around and was firmly pointed in the direction of Jack Huntington in Grass Valley. Jack's shop is not right off the Interstate; you have to want to go there. :-) Jack's riflesmith, Shawn Davidson, took the GSR in to check, and after a short while, had the answer with concurance of all the fellas in the shop. Send it back to Ruger, do not pass GO, etc etc, and do not be surprised if it came back with a different serial number. Must have been a Monday or Friday gun. It did come back with the same SN but everything feels tighter and less sloppy. The extractor doesn't jam up on the heal of the rim anymore, locking the bolt out of battery. Ruger did better the second time around. Will make the trek up the hill again to make sure all the details have been addressed, but was extremely pleased with Jack, Shawn, and JRH Advanced Gunsmithing. Obvious YMMV, but check them out.

Who needs an AK build? I have all the tools and knowledge to walk you through your build from flat to finished rifle. I will trade the use of my tools time and instruction for parts or cash. Or if you just need help with rivet setting, headspacing, FCG setup, rail welding, etc. I'm your guy.

Gentlemen, and Ladies, stay away from J&G in Granite Bay. They are solely focused on sales, and not on service. I brought in an M1A scout squad and wanted to inlet and finish a Boyd's M1A walnut stock. (I didn't have time to do it, sorry) It was there for two months with no call, no email. Went in to get it out of service, no apology, nothing.

Seconded. On my very first build a million years ago, I made the mistake of filing the ejector to fit. took off a little too much, and had issues with stovepiping from FTE. Talked to J&G, I asked if they could weld a glob onto my ejector and I would file it to work. They said sure thing, $50. A month later (crazy long time to wait for one little thing) i get it back. They hadn't welded it. They just "profiled" it. Claimed to have test fired it. I take it out, sure enough, still FTE.
Demilled and started over, works great now.

Screw them. They can't find their asses with two hands and a map let alone gunsmith.

I got my HSC at J&G, I guess not to many asian guys walk in but he looked at me weirdly then I just asked to take my test. I finished my test in 1:20 and only got 2 wrong. After getting my HScertificate, no thanks for the business, coming in or friendly goodbye, I probably won't take any of my arms there either,.
