best way for us to solve this issue once and for all is everyone get a coconut or 5, go to a range with 100 yard option, setup the coconuts with a camcorder and shoot it with 22's at a 100 yard distance.
Winner 5 shots 5 hits get a Calguns shirt!

I don't know how many bad guys will stand still for a perfectly placed head shot. A more realistic test would be a ballistic gel torso with a skeletal structure simulating bone with a couple of layers of clothing. Not saying it wouldn't be lethal, but in an adrenaline situation, the bad guy would likely cover some ground between you and/or do you some damage.

.22lr might not be the most devastating caliber ever, but I don't think anyone is going to voluteer to be the test case

Anyone that say any 22 rifire bullet can't/won't kill is a fool! If placed just right they're just as effective as any other bullet.
For defense I'd use a hyper velocity round like CCI "Stingers" or Remingtons "Viper" or "Yellow Jacket". Mail Clerk |

When I was 17 years old I was "accidently"shot in the abdomen with a 22 LR, I was shot at point blank range 2 to 3 feet away with a bolt action magazine fed rifle. The bullet entered 3 inches above my navel and exited 1.5 inches left of my spine( it had the lost enough velocity that it did not penetrate the t shirtI was wearing and fell to the floor.) The projectile penetrated my small intestine in multiple places and blew apart my left ureter. In regards to " stopping power"I can say this, I felt absolutely nothing for 15 minutes or so, however, I immediately knew that I had been shot and the shock of that alone was enough to bring me to my knees in panic. I personally think that if it was a bad guy on drugs or fueled by adrenaline and you didn't impact any bones causing the round to ricochet inside the body cavity impacting something vital he would most certainly be able to keep coming at you.

like someone already said, once the first shot is fired...most BGs will turn and head the other direction...so in theory, a .22LR has just as much 'stopping' power...the issue now is what is your definition of 'stopping power'...lol.
regardless, when push comes to shove, and i unfortunately need to 'stop' a BG coming at me....my hand will either find and grab my .45 ACP or my 12 gauge loaded with plenty of stopping power...

I have no clue where to begin looking for the data, but it's been posted here before: the .22LR round is responsible for more human deaths here in the civilian world than every other caliber (or just about).

His thought were that people did not respect pellet guns and .22 LR so those were the rounds that zipped up the street, into car windows, etc He said that people tended to respect bigger guns and they were more aware of the down range impact area. He said that you do not see people skipping a 30-06 across the lake but you do see people skipping .22s along the water. This might have something to do with the # of .22 shootings. (Besides that they are cheap to buy and everyone ownes a few)

While the .22 does have some Zip.... You might be better off with practice so that you can hit as well with something that delivers at least 350 ft/lb of energy If you won't train to hit with a bigger caliber and you can hit with a .22 Reevaluate if self defense is for you.... I am a fan of formal training and practice to retain what you learned in formal training.

The .22lr may not instantly kill someone unless placed right. However, the capacity for harm is high due to other factors, such as panic and more importantly, infection.

Its only a very poorly-built or badly worn-out 22, or the use of very low-grade cheap rounds, which couldn't hold 3moa at 100yds, the diameter of the usual sort of coconut being a little more than 3moa at that distance, given a shooter with reasonably good rifle skills. Now, trying to actually 'kill' anything larger than a mouse with a 22 at 100yd. is a very different situation, as anyone who has shot rats at a garbage-tip could tell you. In such a situation, its seldom one rat in a dozen which just flops over and expires when hit. Actually, the humble 22 is 'fascinating' in this respect. Under optimal circumstances, the 22 could, theoretically, kill almost any living life-form. There is a folklore story, which seems utterly impossible, but was alleged to be fact, of a zoo elephant which was suffering from some incurable problem, so the zoo management decided that it should be put down. Allegedly, a zoo-keeper who had made a close study of elephant anatomy was able to 'humanely destroy' it, instantaneously killing it with one shot to its brain with a 22. I've no idea as to whether the story is true or not, but it would seem theoretically possible, as the animal would not have been moving, and the person, who knew its anatomy, would have had the time to place the bullet precisely. There were plenty of old-timers who got their venison with a 22, having the skill and practice to place the little bullet in the exactly correct location to humanely kill the animal. (deer are indeed 'spooky' but not very bright.....a salt lick near a suitable hidey-spot works rather well, actually, if one has the necessary skill and patience) As a generality, tho, trying to actually kill 'vermin animals' with a 22 is 'not easy' at best, if one means to kill them humanely. The humble 22 is justifiably famous, and also infamous, at the same time.....it can kill, but is more likely to just wound, unless used with great skill and prudence. Far too many animals must have died horrible, lingering deaths after being shot with the 22, and only crippled. cheers Carla |

That's always been my thought as well. If they don't then you are going to have big problems with no matter what caliber you have in your hand. If someone is that hyped up on some type of drug it's going to be tough stopping them. Just my .02
