Default loose pep sight M1 garand

i have had my 1944 springfield M1 for about 6 months. i was wiping it down and i never noticed that you can rattle the pep sight. the windage and elevation knobs work properly. i never noticed this before. any ideas. i never took a M1 sight apart before.

the spring/ cover is going bad. I had the same problem, changed the cover, and it went away.

Pulling apart the rear sight isn't too bad. Here's a link on how to do it - scroll down to step 24. If you have to replace the spring, the CMP is a good place to look. Here's one they offer for $21 http://estore.thecmp.org/store/catal...4=&note5=&max=.

Default fixed it

After reading up on this problem i played with the cover. it was so loose it almost fell off after removing the other parts. i was able to TWEAK the cover just enough to make it snap in tight. everything was clean inside but dry. i lightly lubed all the parts and put it back together. BINGO problem solved. it still has a little side to side slop but not much. I love little projects that cost nothing .
thanks for the advice guy's.

Tune up the rear sight base/receiver, and tighten the peep slide in base if you are serious about shooting at distance (beyond 50/100 yards).
