Default Long Range practice

Got a cold bore hit at 1572 yards and we beat up the steel pretty well...gonna have to rotate plates, that close one is taking a beating. We have three targets and that one has always been the "close" one. Time to beat up one of the other two for awhile.

a bunch of my old stuff is gone too, but its the only way I know how to do pics on forums that require URL. I took a long hiatus from posting and the internet kept moving without me!

We shoot in a top secret location outside of Vegas. The spot we are shooting in now we have got out to 3586 yards. (Closest target location to 3520)

The only CA stuff we've done to this point is the URSA shoots outside of Barstow CA.

No use going to Tonopah if you don't have some DOPE

Correct but I'll have DOPE before heading to Tonopah

And Barstow ain't Tonopah . . .

And finally it's for fun, meeting the other shooters, socialize with a few beers at night . . . and building experience

Sorry for the thread jack Hog. Can't wait to hear about your 416 Barrett. Last time I ordered once-fired brass from Barrett all the cases had the test loads written on them.

Hey King,

You can use your supersonic DOPE for Tonopah. But, the transonic ranges will need verification. I have had some success with AB's CDMs at transonic.

Barstow is close to 2500' and Tonopah is about 4500' elevation. So, if you can hit 3500y in Barstow it will be easier to hit in Tonopah. And at least you will know you have enough cant on the gun to hit at 3500y.

I finally got my hands on an 8-twist barrel. I'll know how fast a SnipeTac will push 400gn LAZERs soon.

Cheers,

Even if I am the last one on the final list I still will have a blast !

Maybe that spot deserves a price

Talking Last minute rifle change...

Well I had a dumbass attack and switched rifles in the 11th hour....surprisingly it shot way better than it should have with no load development, just ran load from the old rifle. I wanted the ability to run 50 BMG, 375 Cheytac, and a Wildcat round that I'm working on, so I sold my Barrett and my Cheytac and bought a DT HTI. 100 yard groups leave alot to be desired, but at distance it shot well. It went:
2/5 at 1406
4/5 at 1676
3/5 at 1943
2/5 at 2222
1/4 at 2496 (ran out of ammo, had one dud primer on one of the close distances)

The good news is that it shot reasonably well at distance and it has room for improvement from a little range time and load development. The platform was very solid and easy to use. I ran the adjustable base which I was also new to, at some distances I used it exclusively to dial my elevation solution, at other distances I dialed half my dope on base and half on scope just to make sure it was functional and tracking properly...spot on. So far I am impressed with both the base and the HTI. Plus it will allow me to run the calibers I want off of one chassis.

Hey Lynn,

There's only one reamer like this . . . the 22 Bad Heavily Smoking Oil Eating Hornet

Let's divulge at the right moment

Still a lot of development to do and want to get that right

LMAO

Just did jump test, found happy spot.

3003
3007
3002
Cool
3005
3006
3000

I will take it. Damn wheel on my adjustable base moved again while shooting, found that there is a tensioning screw that you can lock the wheel in where it is set. That would've been handy information to have! It didn't come with paperwork. Better to find out now than during the match I reckon!

I'm running Retumbo. I jacked my jump test from Berger. If you google "Berger Jump Test" it will give you particulars.

It's basically .002" off
.042" off
.082" off
.120" off

They also give you one where you start jammed, but I'm not interested in that, makes a mess if you have to extract round without firing. You can fine tune it once you find what the rifle likes "in general". I like to find where accuracy starts to degrade and keep them as long as possible, then as rifle wears, you are still in the "happy spot".

The Berger Jump Test is 0.040 increments. My Dashers like 0.020 into the lands and 0.125 off of the lands. My 300 Ackley liked 0.020 into the land and 0.185 off of the lands. My 300 WSM likes 0.020 into the lands but that was a flat based bullet not a VLD.

KingAir
6000 FPS you can get with a 300 Weatherby and solids I would go for 8000 FPS.

Yea, sorry, I didn't come right and answer...oops.

I would keep Chrono on while doing the test as well. I used to find powder charge where I got best/most consistent speeds, then do jump test to find best accuracy. I've seen a correlation between jump/SD with both this rifle and my last one.

Which adjustable base are you using - MOAB Gen 4? If so, and in regards all MOABs, I have never heard the complaint that the "wheel moved". Tell us more.

Gen 4 MOAB, I had it zeroed, shot groups both Friday and today, after shooting a string of keys say 9 rounds. looked at knob for elevation on base. It was no longer on zero, (both days) it had moved from zero, don't remember how far, it was more than a full MOA, but less than 2. Don't know if I hit it manipulating bolt or if it moved under recoil. When I got home I discovered there is a set screw to lock it in place. It will be locked after I dial it from now on.

Weird thing is we shot at distance Saturday and I was paying close attention to it, as it had moved on Friday when zeroing, and we were just shooting 5 rounds per distance and it never moved from where I put it. Not sure, but I will be utilizing the set screw from now on.

The smoke is the oil while cutting threads.
The shank is 1.64" diameter in front of the threads so that's no 22 hornet.
The reamer shank is 3/4" and the flutes are bigger than the shank.

Talked to Heritage folks today after The Facilitator brought it to my attention that I shouldn't have adjusted the screw that I was playing with. Here is what I learned.

Don't mess with this screw, as it is for your positive stop for zero.

This is the screw that adjusts tension on the M.O.A.B adjuster wheel. It is located in the rear of the housing on the opposite side of the housing where it says GEN 4, so as you are looking at rifle from rear, on left side. You have to look at the side of unit and turn the wheel until the screw lines up with hole in the housing. You then tighten the screw until "resistance is felt when turning the adjustment wheel" (pay no attention to how dirty mine is, I shoot in the desert)
