Default Would like to build a 9mm AR...any complete kits minus the receiver?

Hey guys,

I did some research and see lots of youtube videos. I just want to build something I can take to the indoor gun range and I have an AR receiver laying around although I've see the dedicated 9mm receivers but I'm thinking in CA we can't get those but let me know if I'm wrong. Is there a kit with everything out there? I've seen the complete lowers. Maybe I can buy a complete upper and build the lower since I have the trigger assembly also and I think it uses the standard stuff. Thanks in advance.

Make sure your upper comes with a ramped 9mm bolt so you can use a standard AR lpk....

I've been looking around, not sure of the best way to do this. There are many special parts needed for a 9mm. I have a Colt carbine and was looking around to build a second one. I didn't find anything cheap.

You can do dedicated 9mm lowers if you go featureless.

Whats cheap to you? This is probably the cheapest

http://www.jsesurplus.com/ar9mm.aspx

Then comes PSA and the rest...

My 9mm has aCMMG upper and then various parts from PSA and Anderson

All you need is a 9mm complete upper and bolt. If the bolt is not ramped, have it done. This will allow you to use a standard ar hammer.

Then all you need is a mag well adapter and magazines. If you are using a standard ar15 lower.

The other thing some say, (me included) is use a heavier buffer.

I feel the CZ scorpion is the better value. Chop suey AR9s, I built one, are not as appealing as a complete rifle.

Wow, two great options thanks guys. I wonder if the one with just the upper has the ramped bolt. I do like the stainless barrel of the complete kit and not having to buy a stock spring/buffer and adapter but since I would need to be a featureless stock grip combo just the upper might be good then I would buy the stock/grip buffer/spring and mag adapter.

Edit: Can I swap out the spring on my current lower to the 9mm spring and be able to cycle fine with .223? 9mm is a stiffer spring so maybe it wouldn't work right.
Edit2: Looks like it will work from what I've read so maybe just the upper is fine then can just swap it out. Then I would just need a 9mm mag adapter
Edit3: There are 2 type of mag adapters the drop in from the top without last round holding and the one you put from the bottom that does have the bolt hold.

PSA says to use their lowers with their uppers. Might be to sell more of their lowers, but might be because they won't work with an ordinary AR lower.

I don't know why you wouldn't be able to get a dedicated 9mm lower in CA. The easy route to take is just buy a whole Colt 9mm carbine for about a thousand bucks. Or a Ruger PC Carbine for a little over 500 bucks.

Might want to read the 9mm thread previously posted. Blowback operating systems require heavier buffers than the stock rifle buffer at 5 oz.
The 9mm thread has all this info. and more.

Oh they work with regular lowers.
I have basically used PSA uppers almost exclusively when building my fun guns.
They fit but might have a tad of gap between the receiver and upper. No problems in functionality and firing.

I got a Psa 9mm kit years ago and put it on a carbon 15 lower. Love it as my intro to an AR for people lol

Correct.

I use a Slash 9mm Q buffer with a spacer and a carbine length spring in my A2 stock. Works great.

I don't think they sell anything like that "kit" any more. They don't sell the Colt mag version of that older lower either. They have a new version that's not as good.
