Default Range Report Dan Wesson 715 / GP100 / SW 627 PC / Dan Wesson 15(Update 03/18/18)

I picked up DW 715 from RifleGear last Tuesday. of course I have to go range trip to the ASR.

I compared these three .357, at 20 yards
Dan Wesson 715 6" / EWK Arms Fiber Sight
Ruger GP100 6" / Williams FireSight
S&W 627-5 Performance Center 5" / Dawson + LPA Fiber Sight

Hornady XTP 125gr + H110 21.2gr : SW 627 likes this bulet
Hornady XTP 140gr + H110 18.5gr : SW 627 is picky for ammo. DW goes better

Hornady XTP 158gr + H110 16.3gr : DW 715, 1 inch / 20 yard! this is THE accuracy I want. SW627 goes too high.
158gr Average DW715 1172fps, GP100 1199fps, SW627 1089fps.
125gr Average DW715 1440fps, GP100 1467fps, SW627 1322fps.
Xtreme 125gr + 2400 15.6 : cheap load for indoor, short distance. DW 715 one flyer but other 5 touching.

20 yard sand bag accuracy
1. DW 715 158gr, center-center 1 inch
2. GP100 125gr / 140 gr, center-center 1.5 inch
2. SW627 125gr, center-center 1.5 inch

GP100 has great performance / cost. $629 can beats $1,289 S&W.
DW 715, I bought $1,099 (+ SAE $50) is incredible bargain. I regret why not I bought 4" 6" 8" barrels package.
8", 10" barrels are out of stock now at CZ-USA.

7 yard, standing off-hand Double Action (1 per 1 sec ... no rapid fire!)
Sorry I'm not good at Double Action.
Feeling
1. SW 627. silky smooth, I only feel spring compression.
2. DW 715. it's clockwork. still stiff, maybe several hundreds rounds to break-in.
3. GP100. sometimes smooth, sometimes gritty. inconsistent.

DA Accuracy
1. DW 715, stable because of heavy barrel shroud.
2. SW 627, by good trigger
3. GP100, when gritty it goes flyer

100 yard Ram steel shooting. still wondering ballistics but 10/12 for 158 grain.
I bought Panasonic HC-W580 twin camera, very convenient. can take target / gun at same time.

Thank you!
I think I should try more powder / load for long distance accuracy.
There will be sweet spot for DW715.

and now I want DW 744... will write some WTS

Congrats on the 715 OP.

I had the chance a 715 pistol pack and passed on it. Still regret not buying it.

4” DW 715 should have good looking, well manageable to shoot
Stainless 8” 10” out of stock...
But now I will PPT DW 15 (Blued) tomorrow, thinking to buy 10” blued barrel.
it will push bullets faster!

bmk20398,

THAT was an exceptional range report; Clear with all relevant data.

Your analysis of what you saw in the data was outstanding !

I wish all range reports looked like this.

bmk20398,

Again, really nice work.
Do you keep all your data in a spreadsheet? I have one I developed over 10 years or so that works well for analysis.

I absolutely luv scouring the analysis for insights after a big testing shoot.

Thank you, actually I started shooting 2016 Summer and reloading this March, not so many load data yet.
I'm using Competition Electronics ProChrono Digital and BlueTooth adapter, so all data are stored in iPhone.
Load data / average / SD / memo / accuracy are written in iPhone Memo.

This about mirrors my experience. Dan Wesson has rep for accuracy but usually when shooting them head to head against other quality revolvers the difference is pretty minimal for me.

Never did anything too scientific though like a Ransom Rest or working up loads for it. I like Dan Wessons and have owned or own them in 22lr, 357 mag and 41 and 44 mag. I dumped the 41 due to lack of availability of spare barrels.

I got Dan Wesson 15, 8 inch blued with Simmons scope at $700 from CalGunner. what a great deal.
I must go to range trip to compare DW715 (CZ-USA) vs DW 15(Dan Wesson, Palmer Massachusetts).

still wondering for scope, it says "1/4MOA per click" but 40 click is not 10 MOA... maybe I will try Nikon next time

I tried
Fiocchi 125gr JSP Factory
Fiocchi 142gr FMJ Factory
Hornady 158gr XTP, 16.1 H110 HandLoad
Speer 158gr Gold Dot, 16.7 H110 HandLoad

Dan Wesson 15 got 1 inch / 20 yard with Hornady 158gr XTP! same as DW 715, they love Hornady.

one problem is, many of my HandLoad ammo can not be loaded to DW15. too tight chamber.

I measured ...
Good ammo diameter 0.3795
Bad ammo diameter 0.3805
DW15 chamber diameter 0.3800

My RCBS sizer die shapes brass to 0.3805. DW15 chamber is smaller than that, 0.3800.
This is smaller than SAAMI chamber specification 0.3809.
I ordered Lee undersized carbide sizing die, it will shape -0.002" to -0.003" smaller.
0.3805 - 0.002 = 0.3785, will fit to DW15's 0.3800 chamber.

I tried 100 yard half sized steel with DW715. 13/18, very difficult! Steel is too small, all hidden by front sight.
next try I need to adjust rear sight to see top of 100 yard steel.

One more video, today.
Angeles Range 100 yard small steel (8 inch circle, Half Ram)
Hit ratio 20/24 = 83% with bit modified Ammo.
0.2 grain less H110 changed hit ratio +10%.

I tried 100 yards steel with S&W 627, Hornady XTP 110gr
Angeles Range 100 yard small steel Half Ram
Hit ratio 7/11 = 63% is less than Dan Wesson 715

25 yard sand bag 5.5-7.5 MOA... 1-2 MOA less accuracy than 715.

I tested new scope on Dan Wesson 15 today,
Bushnell Trophy handgun scope 2-6x32

got less than 1 inch accuracy at 25 yards.
I assume Dan Wesson itself is 1-2MOA gun, other inaccuracy is caused by me and ammo.

Trying 100 yard half ram steel... OMG it's too easy. I should try standing off hand next time.
POA: top of Ram's back
POI: grouped about 4 inch, at center of Ram. drop = about 3 inch

Nice range report!!

I’m curious if you shot the same load from the same gun with a new target each time, if you’d see whether the groups are different because of the gun/load or if it’s because there is inconsistency from the shooter when taking a pause to reload and reset your stance.

I’m not suggesting I know but when I take pistols to the range I don’t really feel like I can say much about the accuracy or the ammo until I have several magazines or wheels full downrange at different distances.

I’ve never fired the DW but I have the 627 and have fired my buddies Ruger. In my hands the S&W is more accurate with the same loads fired from both but the purchase was more about feel/fit/finish because they were both plenty accurate. My buddy shoots the Ruger better than he shoots my 627 so he laughs at me for paying 2x the price for the S&W

Thank you, consistent accuracy measurement is difficult...
at least I use same target paper (have more than 1000 shoot-n-c), bring “standard” loaded ammo to compare, same sand bag.
If accuracy is very different compared to other day, something wrong.

I feel 627 likes lighter bullet 110 or 125 + faster powder(not H110). When I find best load for 627, I will report rhe recipe.

Yes I agree, 5-6 shots at 25 yards is just a small sampling(low statistic reliability), so I'm watching 100 yard steel hit % for several recipes.
by 20 shots or more I can say "at 85% probability this gun-ammo grouping at 100 yard is better than..."

You got it down. It's really working for you.

I have to make 5 weights of each powder/bullet recipe and then select the best of the 5 groups.

I am amazed how many times I have started at the manual's Minimum and watched the accuracy go up with weight and then down with more weight to the Maximum.

As the combo gets more powder, 5 Group sizes go
3", 2", 1", 2", 3"

It gives me great confidence in the manual and in my handloads.

I really enjoy my DW 715, but the DW 740 357 Maximum is as sweet as it gets.

I want Dan Wesson 44 Mag someday
1 bullet / powder needs 4 or 5 charge, and there are so many bullets and Powders! Now I'm using H110, No.9, 2400 (Hot, moderate, mild?)

So far Hornady 158 + H110 16.3 is good enough, but I ordered Nosler 158 JHP yesterday. I'll try next month.

Dan Wesson 715 rear sight is compatible to GP100... I didn't know.
Front: EWK FireArms Dan Wesson Fiber Sight (slightly fat fiber)
Rear: Williams FireSight for GP100
