Default The System

While vacationing in Florida many years back I did a ride-a-long as I typically do while on vacation, I was introduced to "The System" where by, the primary and secondary weapons are able share magazines. Upon my returning home I switched my back-up to be compatible with the primary sidearm.

Are there others who's back-up and primary weapon can use the same magazines? I know that Glocks carriers have that option, but not sure about other manufactures?

Never did it with my duty, back-up combo. Duty and off duty were though, Sig P226 and a P229 at least until we switched from 9's to 45's. For me it was more about same system, and controls than same mag use.

We used .38 revolvers when I was first hired and my back up was a .38 also. We transitioned to the 92f in late 1989-90, but my back remained the same due to the department's restrictions. The semi-autos they allowed back then just weren't that concealable. We could carry the Cougar, but not the Mini-Cougar, for example. Since I've retired (2003) there have been some changes and a lot more options. I think they were waiting for me to retire.

It certainly makes sense to me to use a back up that utilizes the same mags.

That's what I thought, it makes sense in so many ways. Both my weapons are Glocks and they operate in the same manner, if my primary weapons goes down, all the ammo and magazine will feed in my back up weapon, giving me a total of 57 rounds available at all times.

I also carry a fanny back in the back of my patrol car with 10 extra mags that I can grab in a moments notice.

My Beretta 92 and Beretta CX-4 Carbine share magazines. Love it.

I should add-

The CX-4 Carbine magazine compatibility goes as follows:
9mm- 92 magazines OR PX-4 9mm magazines
.40- 94 magazines OR PX-4 .40 magazines
.45- PX-4 .45 magazines only

The carbine cannot use either/or style magazine interchangeably without alteration- when purchased the owner must choose which style magazine s/he would prefer. IIRC it's not expensive or time consuming to alter the carbine to accept the other style magazines....
