Pet peeve of mine? Members who post "tag" to subscribe to a thread. It clutters up a thread when there's already a built-in method of subscribing to threads that your interested in.

John
pardon my ignorance..

when i click user cp , it only allows me to see threads that i have subscribed to..not threads that i have contibuted to..please help

From the User Control Panel...

In the menu on the left hand side select "Edit Options".
In the main window go to the section titled "Messaging and Notifications"
Look for "Default Thread Subscription Mode".

Set this to "Instant Email Notification" or whatever other option you want. This will automatically subscribe you to any thread you post in.

Not sure if it's me or the site but I cannot search forums from my iPod Touch. The thread tools drop down works but no search. This is quite annoying when trying to find something specific.

Start a new forum with the title:

California Lawmakers who work for us and their comments.

This might attract lawmakers who want to clarify their position on issues like concealed carry, one gun a month and other weird backward rules. Maybe we could ask them questions?..or they could be a 'guest' for a week...?..

I hoestly did not look to see if this was suggested, but how about the equivalent of an Out Of Office message for the PM's? I've had people say they were sorry to respond so late due to being out of town, or what not.

How about offering a lapel pin so I can advertise the site when I'm at work???
I can also have it on my motorcycle vest.

I'd be happy if I didn't get the "errors on page" notification on every single page with 1.1.....Running XP pro.

Default The Search feature 3 character minimum

I read the above posts. Problem is, is that no one knows. And if you search "NRA" or "9mm" you don't get an intelligent usable response.

EXAMPLE:

"9mm"

NOT FOUND

Thats useless

Search String must have >3 characters.

That makes sense.

If the error message feature cannot be modified so that it is educational, Is this posted anywhere or can it be made a sticky ?

The other end of the problem is that is has to be easier for the engine and it has to turn up more relevence if the subject is shorter. Right ?

Thank you and good luck.

Default Google Engine

Not yet. If you are within a Forum, such as this one, that option is not shown and MAY not be apparent.

I found my original search problem word by searching Google outside of this bulletin board.

Just tried it works like a Champ.

My original thought was "Why would I use Google to search WITHIN an exisiting BB ? "

"Why would that search engine be better than a local one ??"

Don't answer that !!

The Google works ONLY WITHIN CALGUNS.

Thanks.

COULD be a sticky or something on the search feature (s) here.

Please add quote and "edit this post" buttons to the iPhone/iDevice version of the site.

As it is, taking part in conversations usually requires me to switch to the full version.

A knife or blade section for knives, daggers, bayonets, etc

Sub forums in the Marketplace like optics and lights, firearms accessories (Magazines, stocks, handguards), knives, gear, uppers, lowers.

I'd like to be able to see how many views a subscribed topic has at all times. Currently I can only see the view count if the topic has been posted in recently.
If I click to view all subscribed threads it should show how many views each has. Or at least extend the time of which it can be viewed to at least 48 hours.
I actually find it interesting to see how many views a thread of mine has, especially a WTS thread, in between bumps.

This is a private forum and it appears the aim of those in charge is to portray gun owners in the best possible light. Cursing like sailors, posting porn, and the like will make us look bad.
Also this site is a family sight. It's not just for adults but also for the younger shooters. So tell me; Have you any children? Would you like them to read words or see things you think it best they don't experience yet? And how about those whos morals tell them not to view or do such things?

What makes you think I posted porn, cursing, or anything immoral. I did no such thing. I had a post modified. When I questioned the reason, I was told that nothing had been done but another post was just deleted. Just like that with a few keystrokes. I'll tell you that if that type of thing happens to me because of favoritism or someone's power trip, I will never support this forum.

I've seen very senior members of CGN get spanked for crossing the line more than once. If favoritism was in play, that would not have happened.

If you don't like the way that this forum is run, you are quite welcome to go create your own forum and operate it under your rules.

Typical reply. If I deleted your posts, would you be happy. You don't even know what happened and if it's true and you're telling me to take a hike. I can see you have an open mind.

You're right. I don't know what happened, so I'm making blanket assumptions based on my own personal experience, which includes seeing very senior, very prominent CGN members get post edits, post deletions, thread locks, and even temporary bans for making posts which violated CGN's rules, and which has also included seeing more than a few former CGN members froth with indignant rage at receiving moderation after repeatedly demonstrating their lack of ability to operate within the CGN forum rules as a productive member of this little online community.

If you believe that any of your posts have been improperly moderated, then would you care to share the details of what you posted that was deleted despite not violating CGN's rules?

Disclaimer: I am just a regular CGN member, without any special status, responsibilities or privileges.

What would you call them?

I think the term 'Volunteer Management' fits rather well.
They are volunteers, none are paid to put up with the abuse enforcing the rules brings, and they manage the forum, in small things such as editing posts and such to much bigger things when I become busy with something.

As for 'no censorship', we have rules, they will be enforced, that's the way it is.

It has been my observation that nobody is immune to those rules. Thus, I am highly skeptical about any allegations of favoritism here on CGN.

When I subscribe the email notice informs me what the new post says without me even logging on to Calguns. It is easy to just discard the ones I don't have a need to respond to.

THe problem with the recomendation to set your control settings to allow this function isn't that "this will automatically subscribe you to any thread you post in", the problem this creates is that you are now subscribed to ALL threads you post in.

Some vBullitien versions allow for your choice. If this is the standard now, someone please ensure the latest version has been download and this feature of choice is allowed or stand by to get a ton of emails in your inbox!

What would I suggest to make Calguns better?

Keep the site fun and informative. The members having more than one common thread will make this a community and it will flourish.

The alternative is to make it like our nanny state and load us up with things you think you know better than us what is best for us and some will like it and most will hate it.

Just lighten up and keep it friendly in the pm's. It isn't any harder to be nice to a fellow Calgunner than it is to be an a.hole. Why not choose to be friendly instead of like the traffic cop (substitute anyone given new authority here) with an attitude (you know the guy, we have all met him from time to time).

We all want it to work and flourish here. If we didn't care about this site and our membership here we would have just said p1ss on it a long time ago and moved on to another site.

My two cents.

Deal

If you believe that any of your posts have been improperly moderated, then would you care to share the details of what you posted that was deleted despite not violating CGN's rules?

Sure, I would love to. This is the thread. http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=303729 There are 71 post on that thread. It is about a bunch of people whining about how much a gun store charges. I have no love for that gun store. In fact, I was not happy with the last purchase I made there. One member had posted repeatedly(half dozen times) about how he was taking his business elsewhere and trying to direct people to other FFL dealers. I made mention of his lack of customer service skills in my post and it was removed by a moderator. I doubt that my post was the most offensive post in that thread. Out of 71 posts, mine was the only one edited. Here is my post before and after.

I don't know you and I'm not looking to pick a fight, but if you have anyone to complain about, start with yourself. I have read your thread about your 80% lowers and find your attitude and customer service skills about as crappy as they come. Your signature line shows that you are proud of your behavior. If you don't believe me, read your own threads.

I am not going to defend Bullseye because I have my own issues with them regarding a purchase I made. I didn't get raped by them, but I had to call ATF myself to prove that they were wrong about requirements they said were law. One thing I've never had a problem with was bad attitude. Never has anyone at the San Rafael store been rude to me and I have been in there at least a dozen times. Due to finances, I am not as big of a spender as I used to be. They have never blown me off when asking questions.

There prices are not the cheapest. That's their choice. If they have a business model that they want to stick with, good for them. Bad for me I guess. I will choose what I can afford. I'm not going to beat them up over it.

When I saw this, I sent a PM to the mod asking why it had been edited. This was the reply.

No post of yours in the "new member, HORRIBLE STORY" thread was deleted prior to today; however, your most recent post has been deleted in an effort to clean up the thread.

I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I didn't catch the part about breaking rules, being immoral, posting porn, swearing or anything else. The other post didn't say anything offensive. Was I being spanked just so someone could show me that they could? You tell me what my crime was.

My disagreement was with what was in quotes.

I think it's fairly obvious looking at the before and after of your post exactly what leelaw saw and why he deleted it.

Crazy, the portion of your post which was apparently deleted looks closer to a personal attack than to constructive criticism, in my opinion. I'm not surprised that it was deleted, particularly if somebody reported it as an abusive post, and particularly in the context of a thread that was already going sideways with a lot of contention. Personal attacks are forbidden by our forum rules, and they can and will result in consequences ranging from a warning to a perma-ban, based on the specific situation. I see no evidence of favoritism or somebody "spanking you just to show that they could". On the contrary, my experience is that nobody is immune to the no-personal-attacks rule, and I've seen some of the most prominent CGN members receive temporary bans for getting a bit too hot-headed and violating that rule. I've even seen some very prominent, very senior, former CGN members receive perma-bans for violation of that rule. I have been called to the carpet for getting out of line, too. We live and learn, or else we live and leave; such is the rule of this forum, and neither you nor I can change that.

You weren't singled out, and merely having the offending paragraph removed without deletion of your entire post or any further sanctions was a mild correction. Based on my recollection of that particular thread, I'm also not surprised that leelaw's responses to you may have omitted the specific details of why your specific post got some moderation; I suspect that he and/or other mods were quite busy cleaning up that thread, which ruffled some feathers and caused some words to get heated.

If you really think I was out of line with my comment, then I will accept that. I will accept my spanking. For your info, no other post was edited in that thread.

As far as the member that was directed at, 7 posts were made by him, slamming a business that has a right to charge whatever outrageous prices they want to and they do have some ridiculous prices for some of their items. What does that bring to the discussion? If you are unhappy, post it once or twice, then shut the hell up. The only reason I said anything at all was because I came across his thread before and found him to be extremely rude to people asking questions about what he was selling. Now he's complaining about how a business is treating customers?

If you say that I was out of line, then this is a closed matter for me. I won't even bother with the other one.
