FAQ: Roster - all handguns must renew on Jan 1 - that is no problem
The law changed to make all renewals due on the first of January every year.
Whether any particular gun might be renewed is up to the manufacturer, but no, all guns are NOT falling off on January first. Please read the Wiki article on the Roster - http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/in...e_Handgun_List

Bump - don't listen to gunstore talk - all guns on the Roster expire Jan 1, and most will be renewed.

FYI, here is the bill that was passed in 2013 that set all handguns to expire on Jan 1. http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/fa...201320140SB363
SB 363, Wright. Firearms: criminal storage: unsafe handguns: fees. (1) Existing law requires the Department of Justice to maintain a roster listing all pistols, revolvers, and other firearms capable of being concealed on the person that have been tested by a certified testing laboratory and have been determined not to be unsafe handguns. Existing law allows the department to charge manufacturers of firearms an annual fee not to exceed the costs of preparing, publishing, and maintaining the roster. This bill would require the annual fee, commencing on January 1, 2015, to be paid on January 1, or the next business day, of every year. SEC. 4. Section 32015 of the Penal Code is amended to read: 32015. (a) On and after January 1, 2001, the Department of Justice shall compile, publish, and thereafter maintain a roster listing all of the handguns that have been tested by a certified testing laboratory, have been determined not to be unsafe handguns, and may be sold in this state pursuant to this part. The roster shall list, for each firearm, the manufacturer, model number, and model name. (b) (1) The department may charge every person in this state who is licensed as a manufacturer of firearms pursuant to Chapter 44 (commencing with Section 921) of Title 18 of the United States Code, and any person in this state who manufactures or causes to be manufactured, imports into the state for sale, keeps for sale, or offers or exposes for sale any handgun in this state, an annual fee not exceeding the costs of preparing, publishing, and maintaining the roster pursuant to subdivision (a) and the costs of research and development, report analysis, firearms storage, and other program infrastructure costs necessary to implement Sections 31900 to 32110, inclusive. Commencing January 1, 2015, the annual fee shall be paid on January 1, or the next business day, of every year.

And, last year at SHOT I asked manufacturer's reps about announcing if some guns might not be renewed.
Their recommendation was - wait until November before getting antsy - check the manufacturer's web Press Release page - call the company mid- to late December Don't expect a list of 'we will renew', look for 'these will NOT be renewed', if such a list is released.

Also note - questions about the abominable Roster are not handgun questions they're California Law questions - this is the wrong forum for Roster questions.

As the 2021 thread(s) have shown, the manufacturers may be dilatory filing renewal paperwork, and the CA DOJ may be cavalier in processing the renewal paperwork.
Give the process at least until mid-January. If you absolutely, positively must know on your own schedule, call the manufacturer and ask.
