I'm looking into purchasing a Big5 795 and I had a couple of questions for all of you who currently own one:
1) Anyone looked into replacing the stock with something similar to a Boyds Evolution thumbhole wooden stock with some minor modifications? I know they make some for the Marlin 917. (I've already considered the ATI and the bullpup stocks) 2) I personally don't like shiny black barrel or silver action and wanted to if anyone had painted either and/or both (I was thinking flat black). Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions. |

I ordered some tech sights earlier this week, and I'm messing with my stock this weekend - Gonna turn it into a super-budget Appleseed rifle.

Once you have it set up, I'd like to hear how it compares to the 10/22. That is what I use for Appleseed.

Everything functions in my Marlin Model 39 lever action circa 1920s; but I had to fit a modern breech bolt to handle the hi-vel ammo.
The S-prefix serial number 39 breech bolts were only able to handle standard velocity stuff.[/QUOTE] I'd like to hear more about how you fit a modern breech bolt to your old 39. I'll be taking possession of a 20s model 39 soon and may decide to do the same. Where did you get the modern breech bolt and what did you have to do to make it work in the old gun? |

I discussed it on another forum: http://www.levergunscommunity.com/vi...hp?f=1&t=13625 There is a slim chance it may fit fine without any work! Smoke it with a Zippo as needed to reveal where it needs fitting, making sure you only file the new bolt, not the receiver! Some reshaping of the firing pin was needed as well. You just have to go slowly and think about it, testing the fit frequently. Pretty easy, but tedious for an hour or two. Try you old pin; it may work or you can use it as a basic pattern. The new style extractor Firing pin that may need a little filing to make it flush in the new bolt:

quick question gentlemen.
I purchased a 795 today and now i need to get some ammo. I was wondering if the 795 liked Centurion HP 38gr ammo or Federal HP 36gr? Thanks in advance Last edited by Stormtrooperthunder; 09-23-2009 at 4:22 PM.. |

Both my semiautomatic Marlins hate Remington and love Federal Bulk plated (coated.)

My waiting period is over on 10/1. I got 1000 rds of Aguila High Velocity 40gr. coming in the mail. We'll see how it handles the ammo. I'm slapping on a 4-16x40. This is gonna be my 1st .22

My 795 works flawlessly on Remington Golden Bullet HPs bulk pack from Walmart. Federal Valu-Pak HPs work pretty good too.

I had a box of 50 Remington Thunderbolts and they shot fine except for one FTE. Manual says those are not on the ok list but they weren't bad for $1.57 at wally world...
Other than that I mostly shoot the Federal Gold Medal Target or Mini Mags which both work great. |

Here is my 795, I did the basic DIY following the R&D precision example. The paint is black and forest green textured Rustoleum(for plastics), and flat black BBQ ceramic paint for the barrel and magazine. The paint on the stock has held up really well and will withstand a good rubbing from a finger nail....with no more prep than a wipe down with a clean cloth. The BBQ paint is not so tough. The cammo pattern is crab grass from the patio. I painted the mag up until the top 1/2" or so, as not to avoid getting paint in the action.
For the texture I used Locktite "marine epoxy" from home depot, the plunger type. When I do this again I will try the "marine tex" as the locktite stuff settled a little too easily. I used an old toothbrush to draw the epoxy upwards to create small bumps for grip and up until the last minute or two of curing it would just settle back down pretty flat. The locktite has a cure time of 50 minutes. I chose that so I could experiment, and play it safe. At the very end I ran a brand new file over the semi hardened epoxy only pressing straight down to create hundreds of small grooves, but the paint filled them all in....too many coats. I did paint the texture before it cured all the way to try and better bond the paint to it, no problems there. The scope is a BSA 3-9x40 with illuminated center dot(red, green, blue x lvl 123). It was 39.99 at big 5 on sale so I figured WTF, it's better than the 20 year old Tasco that was on there. I removed the front sight, just to make the barrel look like tacticool. Thats about all I will do to this little guy(maybe a 20.00 bipod or something) The hardest part was the toothbrush epoxy thing, but i did not secure the proper texturing tool before I started so thats my fault...it was the best i had laying around. Sorry for the dark pics....but the camera phone uploads so much faster and easier than grabbing the DSLR. |

Well, I've been chasing a tacticool .22lr plinker, but after some money I was expecting to come in isn't, I'm going with a 795. Fingered one today at Big 5, and I like it. I'm going back in a few days to buy it (if it isn't sold!).

Just got back from Big 5. Got the sales price honored (guess it was $159 and not $149, lol). $198.99 after taxes and fees.
Now the waiting game... Last edited by afro; 09-30-2009 at 12:42 PM.. |

What see-through rings did you use? Are they usable in this setup? It looks like the bell of the scope would interfere with using the iron sights. Let me know what you think. |
