Jr in Livermore. No real great options on the penninsula. In SJ I go through MPA rather than any of the brick and mortar locations, although I've had reasonable experiences at Bay area gun vault and Reed's.

It takes several hours to get from one part of the Bay Area to the other, especially East/West travel as the Bay is in the way
Bay Area Gun Vault has always done me right, and Eddy's Shooting sports as well. Both are on the Peninsula.

Yes. Be vague about what city your friend lives in. That always helps.

I've always found Reed's in Santa Clara to be helpful and friendly.

Default 29 Outdoor Gear in American Canyon

Good crew, good selection, and they sponsor matches & training. Gunsmith on site. They charge $20 to receive bulk ammo orders which is pretty reasonable.

Hard to beat on inventory- pretty big store. Too bad Sportsmen's skipped out of town in Milpitas.

Or you could just imply that he/she isn't concern about travel, hence anywhere in the general Bay Area is fine.

Throw out a recommendation and if it works for the OP then great; if not, oh well. Or avoid the comment all together.

Richardson Tactical LLC in Hayward is pretty good.

Another vote for Reed's. I have less experience with 29 Outdoor Gear, but they seem good, too.

In the southbay: Reeds, Bay Area Gun Vault, Eddy's are my picks. Sportsmans Warehouse was awesome until they took it away.

There are no gun stores in San Francisco....and there is no gun crime in San Francisco/Oakland.

San Francisco...None. No gun stores.
South Bay-Reeds. Good selection. Good range (but avoid date night at all costs). They have a good rental selection too.
East Bay-City Arms in PH. Kinda gruff Russian/Ukrainian(?) guys, but that's their humor. They like to joke around and come off as rude.
Tri-Valley-Doms in Livermore. Limited selection, but no hassle. JR in Livermore-Limited selection and a poke in the eye for asking questions.
Dublin-Guns Fishing & Other Stuff. I know they got a bad rep for their Vacaville store, I've never been there. I've always had good experiences at their Dublin store. Great selection, ammo, reloading etc etc etc. Higher prices. Decent range and they allow somewhat rapid fire/double-taps as long as you keep it under control. Their range was recently revamped in the last year, so hopefully they have more lanes open and running.
North Bay-29 Outdoor. Small shop. Very limited selection. Don't know how they stay afloat. I go in there all of the time to try and buy stuff, but never have anything I kinda/sorta could use. Great place to go though for ammo orders. Then, hit the wine country with the wifey!

Have your friend drive to sac and take him to river city gun exchange. River city stomps any gun store in the south Bay Area.

There aren’t really any more old school shops left in the South Bay, the gun exchange in San Jose is probably the last one. Big 5 in Milpitas isn’t a bad option if he just wants a pump action shotgun or Ruger 10/22.

The way I did it in the Bay Area is ordering online and transfer at Rogers Relics in Santa Clara. Roger and Lisa were old when I used to go to them so who knows if they’re even open anymore. I went there mainly after Irvington arms in Fremont shut down, they were pretty good for the most part but I think they changed names/owners a couple times. Sportsman supply in Campbell was OK also...

If he likes the big box store experience he can try Bass Pro in south San Jose, but beware they’re $$$.

Cordelia Gun Exchange. They more or less always have a great selection of Awesome firearms and know their stuff well. My preferred FFl.

A lot of stores here in the South Bay are not open yet or by appt only and the selection is low.

My suggestion is Wild Bills Outpost in Elk Grove. They have practically every firearm you could want. Good selection of CZ, Glock, Sig etc. Each caliber is given 1 glass counter. I think 9mm had 2 and all are full. Long guns cover the wall and there is an area in the back with discounted long guns.

Go early (like when they open). Lines get long.

And Bass Pro in Manteca. GFOS in Dublin, but bring your wallet and someone else's too.

Another thought, I do buy local and also by Internet which I have sent to an East Bay favorite FFL, Rob Blank, RMB Enterprises in Milpitas. A very good internet store for Californians is EBR Works in AZ. Michael is a great guy who moved Evil Black Rifles from CA to AZ. He understands our gun laws and his pricing is competitive. EBR has a brick and mortar location and is a CG vendor as well. Also AudioPhil is similar to EBR and I think he can do a bit more and spend more time. He is known for organizing some great group buys but does single items as well.

I don't understand the love for bay area gun vault. Selection is ok and the people are reasonably good. But the transfer pricings is insane. They want $100 or 10% of the value, which every is more. That nuts. There do exactly the same amount of work for a $200 gun or a $5000 gun. This is just pure rent seeking.

I didn't bother to ask for their ammo transfer fees but I'm sure they are just as bad.
Their pricing isn't all that great on their inventory as well. Most bay area shops charge MSRP or close or to it but $800+ for a Riley defense AK, nope.

Reed's is seeing customers by appointment only, I checked it out on June 2nd. Try their website or calling to set up the appointment - no drop ins.

3rd for AAA’s in Vallejo. Bought lots of gear here. Best used gun selection , off roster Guns show up. If they don’t have it , tell them to call you when it comes in. Just after I bought my SP-01 off Calguns , they call and say an SP01 Tsctical showed up. Too late. Next day a Sig P320 showed up . I had waited for months. The week I buy something , both of the guns I was waiting for come in. Murphy’s Law.

29 Outdoor Gear in American Canyon has one of the best gun smithing teams in the Bay Area. Most of their gear is in the back and you have to ask. Great deals on ammo. They also run Threat Scenarios with Defensive and Competition classes on private land . Two Thumbs up.

Imbert and Smithers in San Carlos also has a fantastic selection of used and new guns. Nice folks. Great shop.
