diginit:
consider this, red dots are battery powered.
cross hairs are not.
you can loose the red dot in "busy" background, you can't with cross hairs.
I've used both. I'll stay with cross hairs.

Went to Angeles Shooting Range after work yesterday. Since I went alone, my cameras were my spotter. My MK-8 shot very poor groupings at 100 yards. But it didn't do too bad at 600 yards. I was able to land seven out of eight shots.

Thank You I tried but couldn't figure out how to bring the video to life.

The vapor trails are awesome. This camera set up really helped me with figuring out bullet drops at certain distances. And I can also review my shooting flaws.

Backstory: just finished building my first AR. Colfax Tactical 80% lower, machined at home. DTI kit for everything else, 16" BB, 1:7, carbine-length gas, standard LPK, etc. I'm not posting a photo of the rifle, because you all know what they look like.

Took it to the range today with some 62-grain Federal green tip and some 55-gr PMC bronze. Iron sights only, 50 yards.

Haven't shot an AR since I last had to qualify in 1993! Old training dies hard, I guess; it did ok from the "commence firing" command. My eyes aren't nearly what they were, but the muscles & fingers seemed fine. Those black dots looked TINY from 50 yards. This target was printed on 8.5" x 11" paper.

Results: The rifle prefers the PMC to the Federal. A lot. That was interesting, as I'd read (on calguns, mostly) that the lower twist-rate barrels preferred the heavier rounds. But it seems that bullet weight has less to do with accuracy than quality does. I shot some more after this paper, but results were pretty much the same. This was all a sandbag front & nothing else.

Other info: the first mag I slapped in dropped back out. And the bolt release wouldn't drive a round into the chamber. About a minute of "Crap, did I wreck this thing? Is it going to explode in my face?" ensued. And then I remembered reading (here on calguns again) that these things like to run wet, especially right out of the box (or the garage, as it were). So sprayed some Hoppes #9 (had the can in my bag) into the dust cover and around the bolt catch and even up into the gap where the trigger pokes out from the fire control pocket, and wow, it started working just fine. Thanks for the advice, forum folks.

Looking forward to the next trip to the range

Put a BCM 20" upper with a cheap Bushnell 4-12x40 on the Colfax lower. It seemed to like the 62 grain 5.56 green tip quite a bit better. After zeroing, I put 50 rounds through a Shoot-n-see at 50 yards. Everything went through the 9 ring, and most were inside that.

100 yards, bench rest, iron sights:

In both cases, kept it to about an inch for 4 shots, but flyers opened them up to ~1.5 inches. I can't seem to shoot better than 1.5 inches lately. Aging sucks!

Went to Angeles Shooting Range this morning to sight in my Vortex Strikefire red dot on my new DPMS Oracle at 100 yards. Second time shooting my AR (haven't really shot rifles in over 10 years and only few times in total). Last week I shot it for the first time at 25 yds. Background on my DPMS Oracle here: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...ht=dpms+oracle

250 rounds today, still no hiccups since new.
Not sure where I should be at in accuracy at 100yds but I was happy with the results with the Vortex. Still working on my breathing and muscle memory for shots. Overall, very satisfied with this budget buy.

This was the last time out at Pala with the LaRue DMR using 68gr. Hornady match:

Excuses: I feel like I could have done better with a higher magnification(3-9x) and I took some shortcuts when making ammo which makes me believe it can tighten up a little.

If that was shot with a .224 caliber projectile it is a 2" bullseye. Each square is 1/2" so that group is closer to 1.5 MOA

This target was also shot with .224 bullets and the upper left and lower right 5 shot groups are submoa.

I took my M1A Supermatch and bedded it into my new Pro-Mag Archangel stock. I installed a titanium nitrided gas piston, an adjustable gas valve for minimum op-rod slam, an op-rod buffer to lessen the slam against the receiver. I did some trigger polish work that reduced the National Match trigger job from 5 to 4lbs. I did a hammer lightening job that reduced the hammer mass by about 35-40% for quicker lock-up. I just installed my new IJK 10-40x50 non-illuminated scope (pretty good for the money) onto my Basset Machine scope mount using high quality scope rings. Cheap scope rings are the scourge of scopes in my opinion. Most negative scope effects are directly linked to cheap rings. Ammo was Russian Wolf 150 gr. (I still have a bunch of it around). My first day at the range with my current set up and shot this 10 round group at 100 yards. I'm pretty happy with the results.

If you can't read my handwriting, that's a 1.25" 10 shot group at 25y on the left from my 16" dissy with a Matech 600m BUIS on a crappy airsoft bipod. Right is a 5 shot 2 1/8" group at 100y from my 20" SDM-R with TA11F ACOG on a Larue bipod.

Or, in mall ninja speak, a .75" group with two fliers! #kidding

Would this be considered a quarter MOA gun? lol j/k It took me ten shoots to mark the center while sighting in the Trijicon RMR at 50yards. The PMC 55gr. bullet made a clean hole through the coin.

Here is a picture of Alli shooting the gun.
