I edited the first post to include this quote from Cornered Cat, which I just found and which fits really well:

As you can probably tell by my sig line, the 1911 is my favorite platform.

Did I know that 2 years ago when I stepped into the world of gun ownership? Nope.

Did I know that last year when I owned 5 9mm pistols? Sure didn't!

It took time, research, money, and a LOT of trips to the range to generate a process of elimination. Id get banned from this website if I listed every quality handgun I spent money on and discovered for one reason or another they were unsuitable for ownership.

Fellow guys, I understand your desire to want your woman to get kitted up and ready to defend herself, but that's a realization she must make ON HER OWN. Buying a handgun for your lady and expecting her to defend herself with it is like buying her a piano and expecting her to outplay George Gershwin. If she doesn't care about guns, accept it.'Cause I know from experience finding your ideal arm is like a pilgrimage to Mecca-its not a trip someone else can make for you.

The 1911 may have been in wars for 100 years, but Masetro Bartolomeo Beretta was arming the world 400 years before John Browning was ever a wet dream.

The reason for that is simple. 99% of the time, the women don't really want the gun (at least not enough to do the research themselves). I'm always amazed about the amount of effort expended by guys trying to "drag" their women into shooting. If women wanted to shoot - they would. All by themselves. They get to the mall themselves and manage to do all kinds of things themselves. Judging my the number of unescorted women I see at the range (virtually 0), I have to assume that the vast majority of women (about 50% of the total population) just are not that into it.

The number of female gun owners is growing. In a poll it showed 23% of gun owners are female.

I don't know perhaps it's because I'm a female, but thus far I've had good luck at getting my girl friends to be repeat shooters. I've been to the range several times with only girls. Many of my friends tell me because I'm so small they look at me and figure they can do it too. LOL. Hey whatever works.

I would suggest the following-

Getting her to shoot

1. Start her off with something fun and light like a .22. Then ask her if she wants to try something a little bigger and reassure her it'll be okay. Don't bring out a S&W500. Too many times I've seen guys pressuring their woman to shoot something way too big and powerful. Of course she won't like it! Also don't put the target waaaaaay out, to try and show off. She'll just be frustrated her shots aren't hitting paper. Make it fun for her. Also for first timers I typically load all rounds. After loading a few hundred rounds for 4 girls, my thumb is black and sore for the next two days, but they are in such shell shock I let them absorb the shooting fundamentals first.

2. Reassure her at how good she was. Positive reinforcement is always nice.

3. Repeat #1 and this time have her start loading her own rounds. Now she is a little comfortable having been to the range, so you want to start teaching her the mechanics. Most new shooters have no clue how a gun works.

4. Reassure her at how good she was.

5. Try inviting her girl friends. By this time she will have some confidence especially amongst her friends. Rent the same caliber guns as you started her off as with the targets close. She'll feel like it's easy. If you get her girl friends to also like it that's great!

PURCHASING A GUN

Do a little research and show her a gun she might like. In front of your family/friends brag about how good she is. Show them the gun you are thinking would be good for her. Then ask if she wants to try it out. LOL... I know this sounds kind of sneaky, but I have lots of friends who only knew gucci, burberry, and sephora... I'm slowly transforming their vocab to glock, benelli, and sig. In my opinion, it's not something girls sit around and do, but if they are shown and encouraged it will be different. I always love getting new shooters hooked... I guess I kind of feel like a drug dealer, but I use guns. LOL.

This is good advice no matter the sex of the person you're bringing out.

Last year I invited a friend of mine and his wife to the local range for the 1st time.On the drive down I brief the couple on safety procedures and proper gun handling, so when we hit the line everyone's up to snuff.

Husband shoots my Beretta. Hits the target 2 out of 5 rounds at 7 yards.
Big Smiles.
His wife shoots my Beretta. All of her 5 rounds hit the target, admirable considering the weapon barely fit her hand.
Big Smiles.

I take my turn, crank out the target to 10 yards like I customarily do on my range visits, and without hesitation shoot a 3" group with the M9 like I usually do. I turn around and see my guests as I explain that its my usual drill when practicin-

Big Frowns.

Oh crap.I spent the rest of the session explaining that I went to the range monthly, and as such I never shot that well the first time out. I doubt it helped much.

To someone who's starting out, what we consider "average" performance looks like Rob Leatham to us.Next time I take someone shooting im not even going to take the line. The entire point of the exercise is to make shooting fun, not embarrassing.
