Default hi-cap magazine questions

**This is Hypothetical**
If I were to own quite a few 30-rounders for a 223 AR, what could I do with them, I don't really feel comfortable owning them, but at the same time, I can't just toss them, what would my options here be?

Welcome to CGN, first and foremost, there is nothing illegal about Hi Cap magazines that you acquired before they where deemed illegal. Check out the AW Flow Chart, you can make a featureless build and run your existing mags! DO NOT get rid of them just because you can not legally buy them now.

You can do anything you like with them! Possession is not illegal or regulated in any way. The only thing you would have to worry about is that you cannot sell them as complete magazines. You could take them apart and sell them as rebuild kits if you like.

You can take them completely apart and sell them as rebuild kits if you don't feel comfortable owning it.

Be like me. (Well, at least in this regard - some of my other personal characteristics may be objectionable )

I own over 100 AR mags I got before the ban set in. Hell, I bought a ton of other magazines as well - for guns I didn't yet own (and some of which I still don't even own now). I can throw hicap mags on the floor and swim in them.

I go to the range and travel with hicaps all the time without worry. Possession of hicaps is perfectly legal, there's no crime - for a crime to exist they'd have to prove you illegally imported or manufactured them to/in CA on or after Jan 1 2000, or that you never possessed them in CA before 2000.

If you possessed/acquired your hicap mags in CA for even one microsecond on or before 12/31/1999, they are yours to continue to possess and use in CA today. Residency is not even a requirement for their possession in CA - even if you were an AZ resident and possessed/acquired them in CA before the cutoff date, that's fine - you could still legally bring in these mags today that you'd acquired/possessed in CA before 2000.

Feel free to use your 30rd AR mags in
1.) a specially registered assault weapon;
2.) an "off-list" AR firearm that is not an assault weapon and which has no evil features
and has a detachable magazine (i.e, doesn't use a BulletButton, and has a MonsterMan
grip or U15 stock)
3.) a Remington 7615 bolt-action 223 rifle set up for AR mags.

Do NOT use your hicap mags in a semiauto centerfire rifle with a BulletButton-style mag lock; that may well create a "fixed magazine holding over 10 rounds" and trigger a secondary definition of assault weapon.

If you have issues with your legit pre-2000 hicap mags, The Calguns Foundation would love to hear about it and help you with full legal support providing no other criminal issues exist.

Do not waste a valuable hicap mag on a conversion to 10-or-less rounds.

The conversion would need to be well-nigh permanent (and thus not reversible) to be a legit non-hicap mag.

Quality 10rd AR mags are easy to find.

Wiese's Rule #1: Never give up Unobtanium.
Wiese's Corollary: God kills a kitten anytime someone gives up a hicap mag or deregisters an AW in CA.

That's BS and probably wouldn't pass the smell test if any inkling of the nature of that occurrence were discovered.

Don't be stupid. Never say "I found it" on a hicap mag. Just STFU, period.

Liberals want my guns, conservatives want my porn. I'll part with neither.

No thanks, I have plenty from the late 90's.
I was acutally kidding as indicated by my smiley. I may not have enough preban like Bill to swim in but I do have enough prebans to make small snow angles (see <- kidding.. i'm not really going to make snow angles in them)

I'll take them for $2 each if you don't want them.

Hrmmm... I just realized something...

Does this mean that a hicap mag that I possessed by borrowing from a friend of mine before 2000 can be borrowed by me, AGAIN? Could we do a full-blown transfer of that magazine from him to me? I did in fact possess it at one time before the ban. Wouldn't it be akin to me living in Arizona and driving through California with a hicap during the summer of 98 and then 12 years later moving back with it?

if you gave them back you gave up possession. I don't think that would pass muster.

Continual possession in CA is not required, but I don't see any provision for giving them up and then reacquiring.
