Scope on a Mosin 91/30
So a friend and I are going to pickup some cheap Mosins for shooters. He wants to put a scope on it and I found this article
http://cheaperthandirt.com/blog/?p=1675 which talks about using this mount http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/product/MGR-342 and cutting and tapping the bolt to turn it down. That seems like a hassle. Would it be easier to find a turned down bold and headspace it? Is that hard or not possible? What have other people done that have put scopes on their 91/30s? Thanks for any info. |

I use a pistol scope on a Brass Stacker mount that uses the holes for the 2 pins in the rear site for mounting. It also is a see-through so you can still use the iron sights to 100 yards.
I also just picked up a UTG/Lepers 3/8" dovetail mount that will work if you remove the rear sight completely. I haven't used it yet, but the issue I ran into already is that it is too long and I'll have to either move the handguard forward and hold it on with a tie wrap or modify one to be shorter by about an inch. I am also not sure how well it will hold as it just uses 3 screws to clamp it down to the dovetail. In both cases though I use a Weaver 2.5-8x28mm pistol scope as a scout scope. It has a long enough eye relief to make it work well. You just have to get used to using a scout scope but you don't have to deal with bent bolts and you don't have to worry about the scope getting in the way of loading with stripper clips. |

Check out this link... I describe how to install a scout scope on a 91/30. I've done this on two Mosins and like this setup, plus it's inexpensive.

The ati mod is the cheapest andeasiest way to mount a scope on a non-collectable Moison, mount is very good/sturdy/repeatable.
I add another screw to bolt handle to prevent typical minor rotation. |

The ATI mount is a PIA if you don't have a good drill press, machine vise and clamps. Don't get me wrong you can do it with an electric drill and if you do have fun with that.

Your supposed to D & T on a good ridgid drill press with fixture or optimally a Milling machine.
Check out the boltman for PU bolts, buymilsurps.com used to sell different flavors of bent bolts. You do not need to headspace when you change bolt/handle, front bolt head is not replaced, only center body with new handle. |
