Default 270 the same case as 30-06?

I was prepping some field picked up brass last night and found a couple of dozen .270 cases mixed in with my .30-06. Other than the neck size, is there any difference between the brass? Just for kicks, I ran a .270 case through the sizer die and was able to expand the neck to ..30-06 size. Could I use the .270 brass to make .30-06 rounds?

Thats a great question. Im checking the dimensions of both case types and they are just about the same except in the neck and shoulder area. From bottom of case to the taper on the shoulder were the neck starts on the .270 its 2.540 and on the 06 its 2.109. My guess that expanding the neck 30 thousands would make the neck thinner causing it to be weak. I have reloaded for many years but never changed dimensions in brass that extreme. Im not experienced enough in that field but I would say it cant be done safely. 06 brass is plentiful so I wouldnt do it....

Why ??? The 30-06 brass are cheaper then the 270 brass. The '06 is the parent case of the 270. But going back up requires more then just running it through the sizer to make the hole bigger !!!

I have a feeling it will be too short. The .270 is based off the 30-06, but you may not have enough metal to resize back up. Is the shell long enough? If so, then you are all good. Next step is to see if you can cram a bullet into the neck without making it buckle.

I have fire-formed .270 to 30-06 and reloaded. The case neck still had to be expanded slightly. I had no problems with the reloads, and the cases failed at the same rate as the 30-06 brass.

The .270Win was based on the .30-03 case. The .30-06 is the improved version of the .30-03.

This ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

That is why the .270 is .045" longer than the 30/06.
