Default One day training class in Orange County (review)

On Tuesday I took my ccw training at http://www.ocfirearmsacademy.com/california-ccw-course they're ex cops and do a very good, speedy job of covering everything you need to fulfill the requirements for Orange County.

Then we went to F3 tactical for the shooting part, and really if you can't get your hits on paper at 3, 5,& 7 yards, you shouldn't be carrying a handgun.

We started at 9:00, and we're done by 3:00. If you're looking for a quick, small (they're were 9 of us) class, check these guys out.

I'm about to sign up for this myself. What equipment did they allow or require? IWB holster? OWB holster? How much ammo did you shoot?

No holster needed or used. You need 100 rounds of brass cased ammo, not aluminum cased for each gun you're going to list.

For your qualification, you need to put 51 hits in the black, out of 72 fired.

We fired 11 rounds at three yards, 20 rounds at five yards, and 20 rounds at seven yards at a B27 target.

Let us know how you did. I don't think I'd recommend this class to anyone that hasn't been shooting for at least five years.

The two day class at FTA at Raahauge's is a better choice for most people.

why wouldn't you recommend this class to someone that hasn't been shooting at least 5 years?

Some of the people in my class had a hard time hitting the target.

As for the class itself, they do a good job of keeping you legal, but I think they need to spend more time on, "now that you're caring a gun, what do you do with it".

Just because you have a hammer, not everything is a nail.

The target is about the size of a small refrigerator. I would be sketched out if someone couldn't hit it from 21 feet.

The class was entertaining and well taught, although, like you said, they did not go into what kind of responsibility you have once you're licensed to carry a gun.

They touched on it from time to time but I really felt that they need to hammer home the point that you only draw your weapon as a last resort.

Thanks guys!

Why no training in holstering and drawing? Isn't that where many less well trained have negligent discharges?

Yeah, doesn't sound like much training. I went with TJ Johnson at All Safe. I went through 400 rounds for two guns in two days. 8 hours of actual shooting. We shot every way possible. In the dark with and without flashlights, from concealment, targets flying at us, from behind cover, on the move, full IDPA style shooting. THAT is real training.

I would say do not take this course if you are uninitiated or uncomfortable around guns. There are courses that will teach you more basic training. This course is for those of us who shoot on a regular basis and are comfortable with their weapons.

I am looking at their website, notice they have lots of options.

Which class did you take?

I have a lot of training, but modtnof it is to destroy rather than focusing on cover, concealment and urban enivorment.

Thanks.
