Default Attending my first Pistol Match

I am going to the Norco Running gun match at Raahauge's Shooting Park this Saturday for my first pistol match. I was looking to get any advice on what to bring or what to know prior to arriving. I also wanted some recommendations on ammo for this type of event, I have a 4" Springfield XD .40.

Any advice and help would be appreciated.

Thanks

My best advice ... don't worry about being fast, just be safe and have fun.

As far as ammo goes, I just buy whatever is on sale. Your not shooting bulseye so just about any ammo is plenty accurate IMO.

Here's a good primer for anyone getting started in USPSA type shooting.

Biffed, any good quality ammo will work, at least 225 rounds and I don't ever recommend reloads unless they are your own. You will need a good holster and belt, like BladeTech and Wilderness Instructors belt, at least 6 magazines, and magazine pouches. Electric ears are good also. I will assume you have some handgun experience, drawing from the holster, shooting on the move, that kind of thing. When you sign in tell Jimmy this is your first match, they will place you with the match director's squad. The RO will help you thru commands and stages. Be safe (keep your finger off the trigger while moving,ie,master grip and don't turn around with the gun, when loading and unloading, and making it safe, keep it pointed at a target, not the ground or over the berm). Don't pick up your magazines until your gun is holstered and the RO declares range is clear. We had an accidental discharge from one of the shooters on my squad last week but he was pointing straight at a target, if it would have hit the ground, he would have gone home. If you are not completely at ease drawing from the holster, the RO will let you start from the low ready. You will be shooting Production Division as unclassified. Go slow and make your hits even though the other shooters will run it fast and make it look easy. I would say above else don't point your gun at me, but I just had sinus surgery today, and most likely the doctor will not let me shoot.

Thanks for the info!! I am really excited to get out there and meet some new people.. I was thinking of renting a holster there until I get an idea of what I want purchase. I have the holster that came with the XD as well as a couple magazine holsters.. I need to grab a few extra magazines and while i am there i will look at maybe getting a holster setup.

Hope to see you out there and if not then another time as I plan on coming out frequently. You wont be able to miss me as I will be the 6'3" big guy that looks out of place.. lol

Norco has loaner holsters and sometimes has extra mag pouches. Your best bet for a holster is still the BladeTech straight drop belt holster, you don't want anything with retention for competition. And the best belt for production class is the Wilderness Tactical Original Instructors 5 stitch.

I wouldn't say its the best belt, but it will do.

The holster comes with XD is really crappy, you will need a better one if start shooting more competitions.

Depends on the number of shooters, usually from 0800 to 1300 hours, or if you start later.

Just save up and get a CR Speed. An outer/inner style belt is so much more useful in the long run.

I plan on getting something good later.. But to just get me by for now would the Serpa work? That is really the only thing that most places carry around here. Is there a shop that i can get a bladetech or something like that?

Thanks

Hey man, I haven't seen a Wilderness or CR Speed belt locally but it never hurts to call around the bigger places like Ammo Bros or Fowler Gun Room. Both are great belts as I use my Wilderness for classes and my CR belt for 3gun. For a cheapo starter holster, check out Uncle Mikes kydex that you can find at Bass Pro. Serpas make me nervous.

Ok thanks for that info.. Yeah, i was doing some searched and most people feel the way you do about the serpa.. I called Fowlers and they dont carry anything but the Serpas. I didnt think Bass Pro carried the kydex but if they do i will grab that.. I need to grab some extra mags and Bass Pro doesnt have the "OEM" one but a different company, are those ok? Or should I make sure to get the Springfield ones.

Thanks

Well I hope they have a loaner rig I can use tomorrow as I struck out trying to find something. I only was able to find a blade tech mag pouch. Also only found 3 magazines which puts me at 5, I better not miss lol. I was gonna bring my gopro, if anyone else wants to use it your more than welcome.

Watch your 180's when you are fanning and aquiring targets and finger of the trigger. Have fun and bring some Gatorade!
