I have a small forest axe and a hunter's axe. Use them both all the time for chopping wood for my rocket stove.

I love the GFB line of axes, but to be honest, it's been proven to me that a good collapsible saw weighs less...takes up less space...and most importantly takes far less overall energy for wood collection and processing

Edit: when its time to split...I'll baton...again to avoid carrying the heavier axe

Don't get me wrong, in some scenarios an axe has its place...

Instead of a maul or splitting axe you'll use a knife and a stick?

I know and understand your point...
However we're talking hunting/survival...right ?

Not homesteading or urban firewood collection...
where a chainsaw trumps a GFB small forest axe

I'll now pick a saw to fell and crosscut...
And I'll do it faster and safer with a saw over an axe

Further...in a hunting/survival situation aren't we talking timber
that is 4-6 inches maybe 8 inches in diameter?
Most even smaller? And most of it ground fall?

Sure splitting would be more efficient with an axe...but NOT a forest axe
And a maul is really only needed for 8 plus diameter...

I can carry 2 collapsible bow saws that weigh a fraction of the axe...
and I'm NOT taking a maul on a hunt or a bug out

And I'll spend a fraction of the time and calories required to use an axe
to fell and crosscut

And when it comes time to split...I'll spend the same time and calories batoning as with an axe keeping in mind the dimensions used in hunting/survival

I used to be an axe guy till I read and tried the saw/baton method
At the end of the day, I had twice the time and energy remaining after saw/baton

But like I said...axes have their place...and I love my forest axe...I just don't carry it anymore...

Backpack = saw
Truck = chainsaw

Awe. I was talking about firewood at home. I have 100 os so eucalyptus trees I use for heat, normally fell them with a chainsaw and split with a splitting axe.
I was hoping to use the gfb for the smaller dead trees, no bushcrafting for me. My mistake.
