Dont attack me but I have a question? Why do "SPR" type rifles have BUIS? You would think the price of those scopes would hold up well and shouldnt break. I mean, some scopes cost more than the rifles? Also Many Hunters for years and years have been hunting with scopes and didnt ever need back up iron sights. I know their not in battle but seriously, how many of you hunters out there have fell and banged your rifle up without breaking your scope? I dont know, it just seems like buis are a waste if you already invested in a quality scope. IMHO.

By the way, I want one but cant afford one, so I am just hating on you guys You all have some nice scoped AR's.

Because sometimes shat happens

see here:
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d6...forceAK-47.jpg

That's a hole left by a 7.62x39,,,the scope still had most of its functions. It worked...but again, shat happens.

+1 what Technique said. Since the cost/weight penalty is trivial it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. At least that's the case for mil use. Your personal needs may be different. Unless you reeeeeeally think you're going to bet your life on that rifle someday you don't NEED buis. So it's a valid question.

A recent pic of mine. The upper is built up to current Nav Spec configuration. They use the Nightforce rings but I went with Larue. Real Mk12 Mod1 guns use the A1 stocks.

Default My first and very poor(and I mean poor..Im broke) attempt at an SPR

Just built it on Saturday and will give it a go next weekend.
Any ammo recommendation? I would like to get near 1inch at 100 yards.
Any brand and bullet weight recommendation?

CMMG upper and Lower receivers.
WOA 18" inch SPR barrel 1 to 7 twist Rifle length gas system
Miculek brake
Daniel Defense 12 inch Lite Rail
Matched head spaced bolt
LMT 2 stage trigger
and the rest are just normal AR parts.

Would love to get a PRS stock and a Ergo grip with the palm swell.

What kind of range are you guy getting out of these SPR's? I see a variety of different scopes and powers for the 5.56, but wanted to know what is the optimum scope/power combo?

I use a Leupold Mark IV 1.5-5x20 mm for tactical carbine matches. The scope is good to go from 5 yds - 300 yds. The second setup is a Nightforce 3.5-15x50 F1 scope. Depending on wind condition and weight of the bullet, this set up is good out to probably 600 yards. Under optimum conditions, you can reach out further. The round is the limiting factor, not the scope or rifle.

I've had my DPMS barreled 18" build banging steel reliably at 650 yards with Prvi 75 grain match ammo. Max range for an 18" SPR shooting 75 to 77 grain HPBT's is probably going to be around 800 yards under optimum conditions. I'm using a 4-14X scope from FM Optics, but I think that range is shootable with a lot less magnification. It's likely the 14X on mine is a bit overkill, but the price was right, and there isn't a comprable FFP scope in a 10X power for similar price. My general rule of thumb for minimum magnification levels is 1X per every hundred yards. More magnification isn't a bad thing, as long as it's not ridiculous like a 40X or something.

There are rather specific design elements within them. Slapping a scope on an M4 does not make it a Recce. It should have a stainless steel 1/8 twist barrel, a full length 4-rail handguard, and on and on. People have taken a lot of liberties with the design, but the Recce rifle Crane came up with had some key design elements that seperated the rifle from others. The SPR is also another rifle invented by Crane, and it too has specific design elements. Its not silly at all. These rifles serve a specific role beyond that of a standard M4. Neither rifle pictured would be considered an SPR or a Recce. They are nice rifles though.

Default Updated Build

Before:

This was on a lower borrowed from another rifle, it now has it's own Stag lower receiver with PRS stock and a harris clone bipod:

Upper Specs:
DPMS 18" Mark 12 stainless barrel. 5.56 chamber with 1-8" twist
Darkmetal Designs muzzle brake
YHM folding front sight/gas block
YHM Smooth forend
Stag Upper receiver
Daniel Defense BCG
YHM QDS rear sight
VLTOR/BCM Gunfighter charging handle (Mod 3)
American Defense Recon scope mount
Famous Maker 4-14X44 FFP Mil Dot scope

Lower Specs:

Stag lower receiver
RRA 2 stage trigger
RRA LPK
Magpul MIAD grip
Magpul PRS stock with craft foam glued to cheek rest
Magpul 10/20 Pmag
Prince 50 Bullet Button

No formal groups with this rifle yet even though I have over 500 rounds through it. Lots of field shooting though after initial zeroing at 100 yards. Plates at 450 and 650 yards are pretty easy hits when using Prvi 75 grain match. Eggs at 200 yards make nice targets for it as well. The muzzle brake is also extremely effective, follow up shots are literally as fast as you can pull the trigger.

Nicely done! I like the cat tail on the scope too, nice detail.

What kind of truck is that? I'm probably way off base but it looks like a Land Rover Defender 90 almost.

Wow! Nicely done and always liked your style on builds. Sick, classy and functional. Very much my taste too.

Versatile with the variable scope + the mini red dot sight. I'd probably just toss in a 10/20 mag for looks. Otherwise, thumbs up man!

pacrimguru,

Is that the 4-16x50 PMII? Selling them through Valkyrie Tactical by any chance? I'm leaning toward just ponying up the big bucks for it, instead of settling for something less expensive. Sweet rifle, too, but the optic is droolworthy.

thanks don and jpop. you guys have really nice rifles as well.

jpop, it's a 4-16x42 PMII and unfortunately, i am not a schmidt and bender dealer. but yes, i encourage you to not settle on optics. high quality glass is well worth the cost. your trijicon is good stuff too!
