Default CaPRC match at Angeles 01/08/12

The California Precision Rifle Club is proud to announce their first match of 2012 will be Sunday January 8th at the Angeles Ranges.
For details about the Angeles Ranges, see their website: http://www.angelesranges.com

Signups start at 7:00am and shooting should start at 8:15am when the line goes hot.
Please arrive at the left side of the Angeles rifle range no later than 7:30am to sign-in and get assigned your shooter numbers.
Your shooters number is also your position on the line so please lineup accordingly.

Match fee is $20 for Caprc members or $30 for non members.
The match fee also includes use of the range after the match is completed.
We usually try to finish by 1pm.
Bring 50 rounds of match grade ammo.
Be prepared to shoot as close as 10yds and as far as 600yds.
Be prepared to shoot from standing, kneeling, seated, prone and other improvised postions.
Bring a backpack to shoot off of for stages that don't allow a bipod.

This match is open to bolt action and semi-auto rifles from 223 up through 308.
A velocity limit of 3100 fps will be in effect to reduce damage to club-owned steel targets.
Bipods, slings, shooting mats and rear bags are allowed and recommended.
Chamber flags are mandatory and are available from the club if needed.

RSVPs are now open on this thread:

As of the time of this post, there are only five shooters reserved for this Sunday's CaPRC match at Angeles.

Shooting your first match can be intimidating. It takes a certain amount of courage just to show up. This is one reason why everyone on the web can shoot half-MOA all day long and hit pie plates no problem at 1,000 yards but so few people show up for the matches. It's scary. Someone actually keeps score at matches:

Still, you have to start somewhere. Here's a target from my first match:

These were hostage shots at 200 yards:

Quote:
Stage 2
200yd hostage
Round count: 6
On the beep, engage the hostage target at 200 yards from the prone position with three rounds on each side.
15 points for shots within the scoring box or 5 points for any other bad guy hit and -15 points for any hostage hit.
90 points possible
60 sec prep and 60 sec shoot.
The headbox is about a minute in size. As you can see, some people got very good hits. I wasn't one of them. I was target six. I tagged the hostage three times.

Here's another target from my first match:

Quote:
Stage 1
300yd coldbore
Round count: 2
On the beep, engage the 3" circle at 300yds with 2 shots.
60 points for two hits or 20 points for only 1 hit.
60 points possible
60 seconds prep, 30 seconds shoot time.
Again, I was target six. That's sobering. However, you have to start somewhere. And no one at the matches ridicules you. Far from it in fact. Everyone there knows it takes courage just to show up.

If you are on the fence about shooting in our match, I think this Sunday's low-attendance match is an ideal way to jump into precision rifle shooting. With so few in attendance, the pace this Sunday should be laid back and the atmosphere friendly with very little competitiveness in the air.

If one of your goals for 2012 is to improve your shooting or just have more fun shooting, come out and join us at Angeles this Sunday. It will be great fun.

I hope to see you there.

The majority are bolt action, with a few auto loaders occasionally. Typical calibers are .223, .308 win, .243 and some of the 6.5mm's (.260 rem, 6.5 Creedmoor or Lapua.)

Almost everything.

Some of the guys have the precision-rifle equivalent of race guns:

Most of these race guns are chambered in what are commonly called "laser" cartridges in the 6mm and 6.5mm diameters. These "lasers" are usually low-recoil rounds that launch slippery bullets at high velocity to minimize drop and wind drift.

Other guys get all tactical about it with camo paint jobs and pic rails everywhere:

Other guys shoot self-loaders:

Most of the guys handload their own ammo:

However, a good many of the newer shooters just shoot factory ammo.

Really, it doesn't matter what you shoot so long as your weapon and ammo are reliable and safe. The targets at these matches are usually several minutes in size. Accuracy of course always matters but it isn't as important as many think. Scoring well is much more a matter of shooter skill than about what particular caliber or action type you prefer. It's the singer, not the song.

Just bring what you have. A good attitude and willingness to learn are much important than how sophisticated your rifle is. Come on out this Sunday.

Some guys have dope cards attached to their rifles:

Other guys have data on their phones. I've seen guys with very sophisticated ballistics software with dope in five-yard increments out to a mile. This software takes into account the altitude, humidity, and so on. Frankly, all of this beyond me. One of the club members once asked me, "Hey, John, do you know the DA?" I thought he was asking me if I knew the district attorney. He was asking me if I knew the density altitude.

Other guys just write the dope onto a piece of tape:

I've seen tape on elevation knobs:

Look at that scope. Isn't that the 10x42 Bushnell that's sometimes on sale at Midway for less than $200? It works just fine. In fact, I want one of these scopes.

I just sharpie my elevation knob:

I like this pic:

Look at those $10 Millett rings. No exaggeration, those rings cost $10. The Bushnell scope was on sale at Midway. And yet Randall won a match on this exact set-up.

Are you a lefty and all you have is a righty rifle? Yeah, we got that too:

Really, equipment is everywhere. You don't require a multi-thousand-dollar rifle with benchrest accuracy, some Schmidt & Uber scope with a Christmas tree in the reticle to shoot precision rifle.

I'm not saying that equipment doesn't matter. Sure it does. Everything matters. However, just bring what you have.

We have two first-timers signed up for this Sunday's match. That's good.

Any other takers?

We now have a third first-timer confirmed for this Sunday.

Any other takers? Come on, guys, start off your 2012 with a bang by shooting your first precision rifle match this Sunday. This Sunday's match should be nearly ideal for beginners. You can RSVP here:

http://www.caprc.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=3459

Resolve that you're going to improve your shooting. Make the time. RSVP for the match. Then show up for the match. Then shoot the match. Success and self-improvement aren't giant steps that are seemingly impossible. Rather, they're a series of small steps that anybody can do if he so chooses. Just make that choice and the rest almost falls in line.

I'm glad you had a good time.

I uploaded the pics from yesterday's match to my Flickr page:

Here are the match results:

Bronze to Rich:

Silver to Matt:

Gold and Top 308 to Danny:

Is that a V for Victory? Or is it for two?:

Congratulations to the top shooters. Well done.

The top finishers with Randall and Steven:

We had four new shooters yesterday:

I'm glad the four of you came out. It's not easy to show up for your first match. It's intimidating. But I hope that you had fun and will show up for future matches.
