We NEED At Least 50 Well-Dressed Calgunners for the 2/16 Oakland City Council Meeting
Mods, please do not move this into the "local" forum, as it will not get the exposure that it needs. Please leave it here.
ETA: Some have suggested (half in jest) that we wear "cone heads or dunce caps." This was in response to a statement made by the City Attorney that gun owners are pointy headed intellectuals. PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS. The TV cameras are located on the other side of the room, and when they pan across the gallery, all they will see will be a bunch of people who look like Klansmen from a distance. This will pretty much cancel out anything positive that we may gain by our appearance at the City Council meeting, and may even have negative effects on the potential litigation. This is the type of image and video that would go viral in a heartbeat, SO DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT. FOLKS - PLEASE VOTE IN THE POLL. We need at least 50 well-dressed Calgunners for the Oakland City Council Meeting that is coming up on 2/16/2010. DATE, TIME AND LOCATION 6PM on 2/16/2010 at Council Chambers, 3rd Floor, Oakland City Hall. 1 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza, Oakland, CA 94612 between 14th and 15th Streets at Clay Street. AGENDA The agenda is here: http://clerkwebsvr1.oaklandnet.com/m...ing_Agenda.pdf SPEAKER CARDS You MUST get a speaker card to speak, you can get one at the meeting, or online: http://www.oaklandnet.com/cityclerk/...structions.htm PARKING At about 5:30, plenty of street parking becomes available, and the meters only operate until 6pm. There is also a parking lot in the area. DRESS This event WILL be taped by local (and possibly national) media. Therefore, you MUST wear at least a dress shirt and a tie. Do not wear camo. Do not wear "gun" t-shirts, or anything provocative. Our objective is to look like the safe and law abiding citizens that we are. At the last meeting, the Brady's showed up wearing matching "Brady" t-shirts and looked like kooks when the local TV crews panned over the audience. PRESS RULES Please do not talk to the press. They may and try and corner you either on the way in, or the way out. Any contacts with the press must be coordinated with NRA/CGF. Without interviewing you, they may ask you which organizations you are a member or, or which organizations you are representing. The correct answer is ALWAYS, "I am here as a concerned citizen." IF YOU SPEAK BEFORE THE COUNCIL Keep your message short, to the point, and respectful. Your speech is taped by the city, and is available on their website about 3 days after the meeting. Local reporters often troll those speeches to look for juicy quotes on controversial topics. WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT IF THESE LAWS ARE JUST GOING TO BE RUBBER STAMPED? 99 percent of politics is theater. By having a strong turnout at this meeting, we will be letting the City Council know that they lack popular support for these measures. We will also be letting the media know that the grassroots gun community is strong and cohesive. This sends a strong message to other city governments that the gun rights community is not just going to roll over when local governments try and take away our rights! ETA: SINCE THIS IS SO IMPORTANT, IF ANYTHING COMES UP AND YOU NEED TO SPEAK TO ME PERSONALLY, PLEASE CALL MY PERSONAL CELL AT 415.827.1776. Last edited by oaklander; 02-08-2010 at 3:38 PM.. |

Since I live in a rough area, I generally dress down all the time. This means jeans, a white t-shirt, and a motorcycle jacket and beanie.
I actually put on a sport coat and a tie when I spoke earlier this week at the LAST meeting, and looked very presentable. . . See http://oakland.granicus.com/MediaPla...=2&clip_id=599 at about 33 minutes in. |

Is there likely to be a way to easily duck out by about 9 PM preferably earlier? Last train to Davis is at 9:47 from the Oakland station...I'm currently working out logistics on this and it looks like the 16th and 17th is going to be quite the dance if it will work at all. O_O

There's another benefit to this: Warning the City Council that we won't go quietly. That every time they come up with one of these poorly crafted and unconstitutional measures, we'll be there to hold their feet to the fire. We'll be there to litigate these actions. We'll be there to bring scrutiny on the morons that actually think that they can get away with this.
Look folks, 99% of winning is simply showing up. It's not that hard. Wear a dress shirt and tie, sit in the audience. Speak if you're so inclined. Let them know that you're concerned, that you have the balls to get involved.... The Calguns Foundation does a great job of running interference for us - but we have to do something, too. Get involved. Fight these bastards. Make them pay for every inch of ground. To steal (and butcher) a common phrase, We Can't Win, Unless YOU Play.

If I'm not fishing a tournament or shooting a match (I have to check the master calendar) I'd be interested just to meet all of you. I enjoy how Calguns keeps me current on the guns laws.
Would this be a good excuse to go to a late dinner/coffee afterwards with all of you? If I can convince my husband to wear a tie, I'm sure I can find my heels somewhere... lol |

Would've been nice to have a "sorry, way out of area" option on the poll.

LOL - I hate polls with too many questions. Here, all I am concerned about is whether you are coming or not. I realize that many of us are completely on the other side of the state, but I do urge ALL local Calgunners to take 2 hours out of their week to attend this.
Guns rights grass-roots action is composed of the following: 1) Direct Action 2) Monetary Contributions to Gun Rights groups 3) Email, phone and fax communications with politicians, and policy makers 4) Grass roots education of fellow shooters and non-shooters 5) Other things Here, there are many of you who have done items 2-5 - but few (percentage-wise) who have done item #1. This is your chance to get your feet wet!!! |

It's fairly safe downtown. And the City Hall is essentially right off the 980 freeway - very little driving in actual downtown Oakland required.

Not a resident of Oakland. But will try to get there to be a supportive, applauding body in the chamber.

I told my husband that I'd buy him dinner if we show up. I have almost 200 hours of PTO, so I think they can spare me at the office for a couple of hours. |

I think there is free parking in the garage next to the city buildings, last time I overheard that the security guards leave the gate open for people to leave w/o paying.
