Default Rem 870: Shell 6 won't insert into the tube

Greetings!

I'm the first owner on a Remington 870 Express. It has the original factory tube extension that it came with; all internal components are OEM, except for an aftermarket follower (a GG&G stainless steel).

Recently, round 6 will not feed into the magazine tube. After round 5, there's a hard unyielding "floor," and round 5 cannot be pushed. I eject all rounds, try again, and voila - all 6 load. I'd say the issue repeats every third time, and this issue did not occur concurrently with installing the aftermarket follower; it's been a long time since I installed that. Yesterday I had a failure to eject, which could've resulted in short-stroking due to seeing if there were any other problems, but of course now I'm in my own head looking for problems. This is my home defense weapon, so I need to have faith that this firearm has zero problems.

So, back to the issue at hand: does anyone know why shell 6 intermittently won't insert into the tube?

I'd say its the aftermarket follower.

Did you ever have this issue with the OEM follower?

If not, put the OEM follower back in.

If it's a "home defense weapon," I'd want reliability. Non OEM parts compromise reliability.

On the 870 Express, doesn't it have dimples at the end of the magazine tube that need to be removed, so that a magazine extension will work properly?

Does the extension have an integral nut on yours like mine does, or does it have a separate nut, like my sons Remington add-on tube?
With his, you need to seat the extension tube against the receiver's tube, then tighten the nut down.

I would be focusing on the extension tube, spring, and the follower.

Hitting a wall too early would make me think the plug is interfering somewhere.

In any case, I would lay the shells and follower under the gun in a row to see where they stop in the tube. Basically put them in a row outside of the gun with the 5th shell positioned where it would be in the tube when you hit the wall and can't load the 6th. This will give you an idea of what to look at - where in the tube the 1st shell is and the follower in front of it.

Yes.
His follower is likely getting caught on the dimple or the junction of the magazine tubes at random times.
Improper reassembly can be at fault.
