Default Pistol Safe for Car

I saw this safe at a gun show in San Jose a few months ago that was designed to mount in your car. There was a plate that mounts to your car and the safe could be mounted to the plate and removed when you park your car. There were buttons on the top to enter a code sequence, then the top would automatically open and the gun and magazine holder were spring loaded so they'd pop up. Anybody know where I can find one of those?

TIA

The closest to your description that I can think if is the Gun Vault. I have a cheaper version the DAC Technologies Sportsafe. I have it mounted in my closet. It has the plate but its not something that's really fast and easy to take off. I dont know about anything that pops up either.

Yeah I've seen the Gun Vault and it's pretty cool, but the thing I'm thinking of is much more compact and is designed just to hold one pistol and a mag. It was really cool. I almost bought one then even though I didn't own a pistol yet. I got the guy's card but I lost it.

I have a Gun Vault that is very simular. Keep in mind if you mount it inside the car it is the same thing as having a pistol in your glove box. And illegal. I was told this by a Sheriff buddy of mine when he saw my Gun Vault was mounted between the rear seats of my truck. Apparently ok if not mounted.???

Your buddy is wrong. The law states that a concealed handgun has to be in a locked container thats not the glove box or center console. A safe is neither.

I found the website! It's right here:

http://www.titangunvault.com/

This product looks awesome. I really like the idea of being able to easily move the vault between my car and into places in my house, like my bed frame, etc.

Thanks for the clarification on the law JDay. That's what I understood the law to be too.

Great idea but looks flimsy in the video. I don't think I'd trust locking my gun in my vehicle and the leaving my vehicle anywhere. But still a very cool idea.

California Penal Code section 12025 does not prevent a citizen of the United States over 18 years of age who is not lawfully prohibited from firearm possession, and who resides or is temporarily in California, from transporting by motor vehicle any pistol, revolver, or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the person provided the firearm is unloaded and stored in a locked container.

The term "locked container" means a secure container which is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device. This includes the trunk of a motor vehicle, but does not include the utility or glove compartment. For more information, refer to California Penal Code Section 12026.1.

His buddy COULD be right. That could qualify as a UTILITY box. I have talked to a prominent gun attorney about this. His take is you could probably get arrested with it and in all probability be exonerated after $$$$$$$$. Take the risk if you like.

Here's a much cheaper alternative. I don't know the quality, but hey, it's cheaper.

So it can be anywhere in the car? But it must be locked in container. Cannot be in center console or glove box anywhere else is ok?

In a locked container, it can be anywhere in the car - even in the glove box or the center console.

The restriction is not to use the glove box or the center console as the 'locked container' - that's explicitly called out as unacceptable in the law (PC 12026.1 and .2). (Center console is often, though not necessarily, identified as a 'utility compartment'; 'utility compartment' is undefined in law, and there seems to be no case law clarifying, or distinguishing between something installed at the factory and something - e.g. a gun safe - installed 'after market'.)

Not sure why anyone would want to have their gun locked up and unloaded. Especially these days.

Unless you have CCW, the other legal option is openly carried and still unloaded - or just stay home, where you can carry as you like.

THE utility box isn't A utility box.

I wouldn't either. The vault would come with me when I leave the vehicle anywhere except my work parking lot or if I'm running into a store. Never over night or for long periods of time outside.
