I’m torn between spending $2000 for the 9mm clone and $270 for the .22 clone. I just worry about quality and reliability from the .22.

I think the Gen 1 GSG5 clones put the bad reputation on the map, those had a few problems. Along with the association to Umarex which literally is an Airsoft company. Also, junk .22 ammo in itself creates a huge negative buzz. I only use the good CCI stuff in mine.

All I can say is I've got a few thou rounds thru mine and haven't had a single issue. Literally the only negative thing I can say about it is the black finish isn't the most robust.

If it helps your decision, CA legislation neuters the 9mm's so much I wouldn't personally want one in this state.

Also, mine is not the GSG clone but the Walther made variant or Umarex maybe

Fed it Fiocchi, Federal and Aguila HV ammo. And so far it’s eating all of it.

I only have 2 magazines. Rather expensive these days and I somehow conserve my ammo having just 2 mags.

That definitly gives me something to consider. The sheer price of the 9mm clone is tough to swallow. If the 22 is reasonably good then that might be the way to go.

I’ve heard the new ones are a lot better then the originals. Feed em well and they treat you right seems to be the consensus.

Buddy of mine had the Walther and damm that thing ate all the ammo we gave it. Did about 5 "mag dumps" of Federal bulk and no hiccups.

I got mine on big 5 a while back when they were carrying it during a clearance “sale”.

Yes, the Walther manufactured, HK licensed .22lr MP5 replica is the ideal choice...either the A5 or SD
IIRC, Umarex is the importer.

The GSG version has been hit or miss in terms of reliability. Caveat emptor.

In response to the bolded part: AW laws treat them like any other semi auto rifle. No pistol grip and no adjustable stock plus the federally required barrel extension for OAL and I can barely tell mine's an MP5 (clone). You're almost better off with .22...almost

Ive got two of the Walther HK 22's and love them. Reliable as anything and fun to shoot.
Both mine were big 5 sub $300 guns a few years back..Well worth it.

Unfortunately CA is one of the states CDNN has given up on and will not ship any weapons to.
I had to go on to gunbroker to get my GSG 522SD, best price shipped was from the seller azroadrunners.
There's a standard and lightweight version, reliability wise there is no difference.
The light weight version just has a polymer receiver.

I bought both version expecting to sell one but ended up keeping both.
Plinking free hand with a red at the tiny metal targets is a blast on these.

Does anyone know where to get replacement collapsing stocks like in the photo above?

One of the rails broke on mine. Turns out the rails are made of pot metal and are weak as hell. I can't find anywhere that sells them.

Does it have to be collapsing? I replaced mine with a real full MP5 stock. Took a little dremeling but afterwards the cheek weld is much more comfortable than the collapsing stock (sorry not selling my stock, best to keep it just in case )

I replaced it with a standard stock since I couldn't find a collapsing one. The problem is my safe is full and the collapsing one allowed me to put it in it's own small spot in the safe. The standard one is too big for that spot now.

I also think the gun looks better with the collapsing stock.

Yeah, I didn't want to spend $400 to $600 on a real one. I think the last one I bought for something like $40 years ago. Sure it was junk, but couldn't they make a good one for a .22 for around $100?

I bought the collapsable stock for my GSG 522 but for some reason when it's fully extended I get about a 1/2" of play in it.
Anyone else experience this?

Sorry lost track, do you have the GSG or the HK/Umarex clone? Because I'm not sure if the collapsible stock work for the GSG will work for the Umarex one?

I don’t think it does but they do make collapsible stocks for both.

GSG.

My fear is that one on HKparts is the same pot metal $40 one that broke, but they're charging $80 - double what everyone else is charging.

Default Still legal right?

I’ve wanted one for quite some time. I recall seeing them at Big5 but not recently. I haven’t seen them anywhere. For give me for being ignorant but can we still own these? If I can’t buy at a local store anymore perhaps I can order online as I think someone mentioned earlier. Would love to add one to my collection.

It is CA compliant, as long as you get the 10 round mags. Note that they look exactly like the 25 round mags...
