Default San Onofre Campgrounds, had a great weekend...

Just south of teh San Onofre power plant is a campground/RV park (basically a 3.5 mile long parking lot).

I swear I've read that this park required guests to be Navy or DoD... and it's on Marine Corp. land, but it appears to be open to the public, and the people around me were clearly not military.

It's not expensive, teh view is AMAZING if you get a good spot, and it's a short (but steep) walk down to a rocky but beautiful beach.

The view!

Mrs. BFG making her way down to the shore.

Rocky shore, moderate surf. We saw a HUGE pod of dolphins, had a sea lion swim by (giving us the stink-eye for taking up his favorite spot), and watched sea birds fishing in the water.

Can't get this view from your campsite, but there are several benches set up at really good scenic view points.

That's the public camping area. The one on the base is north of the nuke plant

Nice! How long in advance do you have to reserve the spot?

We're pretty picky about getting a good spot, and tend to reserve about 6 months in advance... but I'll bet you could get something in the near future at reservecalifornia.com (might be reserveamerica.com ? )

Fair warning, there is a train track and the 5 freeway just a few yards from your RV. :-)

The closest thing to a shower I saw was those outdoor wash-the-sand-off-your-kids things. The available toilets were plastic RV models. Fortunately, I brought my own of both. :-)

Use to be a famous nude beach but State Parks "cracked" down on it

We made it far enough South that we found a second state Beach area... Don't think we quite made it to trail 6, though

:-) The wife would be very upset if we didn't do at least two of those things.

That particular site was, I think $20/night. It was cheap enough that we reserved Monday just so we didn't have to check out early on Sunday.

Also, we made it to the campsite, in rush hour traffic, from my job in Cerritos, in almost exactly an hour!

Nice thing about the place is you just set your food on the table and it will cook itself in 20 minutes.

It's all one state beach, from the entrance just past the power plant to trail 6.
There's a gate after trail 6 that you can bike through but that's part of camp Pendleton

Sorry, let me clarify my terribly written statement.

Most of the shore is covered in stones.

There are some places with sand, bikini girls, and a lifeguard station.

We found two of those. One south of the powerplant, and one further south.

I think, if we'd continued south past the 2nd lifeguard station, we'd have reached path #6.
