CZ 97 + Cajun Gun Works = superiority.

OP, its your first foray into the .45acp, I would caution against overspending on the semi-custom.

My recommendation: Glock 21/21sf, Kimber Custom II, Springfield Milspec.

then I would go with the GLOCK 21, because of the simplicity, easy maintenance, low number of parts, reliability, very reasonable price.

the M1911 is a great design, but it's over 100 year old technology, and more of a nostalgic piece, kind of an outdated / obsolete design, heavy , lots of small parts, very old school.

I also shoot both, but for a guy like you that is already familiar with Glocks and want something modern, a .45 that will most likely be reliable right out of the box

the G21 is a excellent choice, and it will go well with your Glock 34 that you already have in your collection.

I have several friends with very nice 1911s and I really enjoy shooting them, great triggers and accuracy all. If strictly shooting recreationally, a nice variety of types is excellent, lots of fun.

Personally, I made the choice to specialize in one type of action since my pistols are used for concealed carry and home defense. I went with striker fired since the first trigger pull is the same as the last (which is true for 1911s but striker fired fits my CCW regiment better for me).

As a result, my wife and I have G19s for home defense, I have a G36 for carry and we both added 9mm Shields for compact carry (we are just breaking them in right now).

The Glocks are very accurate, easy to handle, disassemble and clean and go bang every time. They are rugged and dependable and before we owned them, I thought they were ugly as a chunk of coal. I don't think that way anymore based on performance.

I think if I were in your position, I would try to get both and enjoy the variety. Also, you might want to look into handloading to get around the ammo mess. It is also quite a bit less expensive and you can experiment with published loads and arrive at the sweet spot for your guns. I have been reloading all centerfire since the early 1990s and haven't bought factory ammo (except for defense rounds) since.

Dan

Thanks for all of the input. For the people recommending the Glock...I kinda want a compact pistol this time..my G34 is as big as a 1911 so I am leaning towards a G30

If you want a G30, consider finding a 30S; the narrower slide does really make a difference, and you retain the use of the full magazine.

My favorites are Glock 41 and HK USP Expert .45... You can still find the Experts around here. Dunno if it is a new run or the old run still in-stock.

If you want something smaller, the G30S is nice, but the bigger guns are more enjoyable IMHO. FYI, the 41 has the slim slide too, but it is the length of a G34 - not on roster.

Ive used a 1911 as a night stand gun and recreational use for 8 years now. Never had a jam or firing issue, but apparently its not a reliable design. I think ill keep taking my chances for another 8 years and see how it goes.

I would also recommend a Les Baer. Buy once, cry once. Good luck with your decision.

I have a Ruger American in .45 that is a great shooter, 10+1 capacity.
I have a Sig P220 and a S&W 4506 that I have yet to be out shot with, and I have had a few friends try with their stock and tweeked 1911's...

Get what feels good to you.

And check out the ammo sale at Sportsman's Warehouse...I just got a bucket of 9mm, .45 and .40, 350-200 and 300 rds, for about 50 bucks each after a mail in rebate.

If you’re considering plastic, check out an XD 45 Compact. Shorter grip, but with a 4” barrel. Great shooters, reliable, not finnicky at all. Proper grip and ergos and 10 rounds with short mag.

Or, if you want to pay thru the nose, a Shield in 45. But, at those insane prices, might as well pony up for a 1911. Best bang for the buck for ‘entry level-ish’ 1911’s are the Loaded models from SA. Great shooters with all of the modern refinements most 1911 guys do to a mil spec model. Plus, you’ve got the SA warranty behind it.

Stock up on ammo. Then get the G30sf. I have several 45's. G21, G36, the Glocks are excellent tools. I prefer da/sa pistols, and I have a full size USP 45, and a USP 45c but, since you already have a Glock, rent the G30sf and see how you like it. I was going to buy the G30s but stummbled on a used G36 that I couldn't say no to. Best of luck, and happy shopping.

My only 45 is a 1911 and I love it. But finicky magazines, small parts, lack of rail for a light, and disassembly all make me turn away from it as my GO TO pistol.

I love Glocks but a 21 is absolutely huge in my hands. Although, i've never shot one. I want to try out the 30SF and see how that one is.

I handled an XD45 and man did that feel good. Very comfortable although I am not sure about it's reliability.

After shooting a Les Baer, Ed Brown and Wilson Combat, I think the best for the money is Les Baer.

Instead of Buy Once, Cry Once, it's more like Buy Once and be done with it! You won't need to look at any other 1911's.

Too many to choose made you confuse heh ! How about set the limit price for your "toy" and start from there. 1911 45ACP on Roster price range from $430 - $4K.
I had cheapest $430 model and a low range $2K model, tell you the true, the $2K model is 4 times more than $430 model, but it ain't shoot 4 time better than $430 model.
Just set your budget then buy one, and beware of "1911 contagious decease". After bought my first 1911 I bought 3 more after that.
My 2 cents.

I wouldn’t fret over the reliability of the XD series. In my humble opinion after owning, handling and shooting both the Glock 19 and an XD, the XD feels more robust. Just look at the difference in the rails. Anyways, all of that aside, there is a shooter on the XD Talk forum that put over 60k(?) thru his XD-m pistols. He also trains HARD. Takes a ton of classes with the big names out there. I don’t know how often or how much you shoot, but I doubt I would ever get to a point of breaking one.

The G19 was great, but choked on JHP. Tons of brass to face and a weird trigger and grip angle made us sell it. Take it for what it is, a sample size of 1. The Shield has been great. So far, very reliable over 800-ish rounds including at least 100 or so Federal 147 +p HST’s. Oddly, that has a tough trigger, but easier to get on target.

IMHO, the trigger in an XD is easier to get to know. Coming from a 1911, it took a bit, but for me, a Glock trigger required a lot more effort to be accurate with.

Again, just my experiences. YMMV.

Lots of good choices out there...

I would recommend you go rent a 1911 5" and a Glock 21 at the same time Shoot a few hundred rounds...
The answer will present itself.

Also a 5" Springfield Mil Spec will be nearly as much fun and you will shoot it nearly as good as most 1911's that don't cost $2K Or more.

BTFlyer You should report back on your decision or all of this was just a bunch of fluff...

If you want plastic get a Glock 30
If you want a 1911 on the less expensive to most :
Rock Island Tactical, Springfield Armory Loaded,
Dan Wesson CBOB, Wilson Combat CQB

Good luck with whichever .45 you choose

Thanks for all the advice and pointers..I shot a Springfield 1911, a G30 and a G21....Fell in love with the G21, went straight to the Russians at City Arms in Pacifica and bought one.

The G30 was too small for my hands and the 1911 felt good but didn't shoot that great

I pick up my G21 in 10 days

Good pick!
I'm picking up a used G21 non-sf, for a really good price. You can pick up a conversion barrel to run 10mm through it, some say you should replace the recoil spring, but other than that you just need G20 10mm mags.

I also hear that you "can" run .40 through the 10mm barrel, but most do not advise it.

My handgun collection is pretty small compared to my long guns. The mil spec/ GI 1911 just fits my hand so nice.

Good luck with your search OP, there's no reason you can't buy more than one.

I pick up my G21 in 10 days
Congrats, OP. The Russians were good to me too.

Probably already mentioned more than once, but no one here can direct you to the best 45 handgun that works for you. Only you will know what works. We can only suggest what works for us. Personally the G30 is hands down the best .45 handgun for me. Don't ask me why. I have no clue and frankly it makes no sense, but it works for me.
