This trip was its maiden voyage. It seems to be the right size, but the netting is too "open" and lets most of the cartridges through. Gotta find some finer mesh and I think it'll work.

I'm too old and fat to be picking up brass, and I'm too cheap to buy one of those fancy, caged rollers on a steek.
Should try the netting off of a mesh laundry bag...similar to this

Oh yeah, I definitely agree with that idea, I just need to get myself down to a craft place like Joannes to pick some up.

I also like 8mmFMJ's idea from this thread.... http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s....php?t=1041496

Went to Steele Peak for the first time this past Sat (5/9). It was overcast so it wasn't too hot and there wasn't a lot of wind. It was a great day once we were able to get our Nissan Sentra up the hill [definitely recommend a 4wd vehicle w/a high wheel base]. There wasn't a lot of people up there which was awesome, and the few people we did meet were really friendly. There weren't any LEOs or rangers of any kind. It was a great overall experience aside from the young guys that pulled up as we were leaving, and started shooting their ARs at some large rocks before flagging us. Made sure to take out more rubbish than we brought with us so hopefully the place stays open for a long time...

^^^ Impressive load out! I do the same thing and take enough toys to make a day of it and make the trip worthwhile. Looks like you had fun.

Tackling that hill, as rutty and silty as it is right now in a Sentra with a loaded trunk? Hardcore. I've seen plenty of other people with more ground clearance park at the bottom and hike it in.

**** That hill has some jagged rocks embedded in it that could damage an oil pan. Those unskilled at negotiating those obstacles shouldn't try what iakonapea pulled off.***

Thank you for hauling out the trash!

True dat.

If I had a low ground clearance vehicle, I'd carry the following just to make sure I can make it home:
  1. Two jacks with some 4x4 pieces of wood.
  2. Five quarts of oil.
  3. A couple of thick milled trash bags.
  4. A can of brake cleaner and some rags.
  5. A couple packages of JB Weld.

Of course, everybody should have a tool kit and a collapsible entrenching tool or shovel in their trunk if they do any "exploring".

Easy for me to say that now, many years ago I learned the hard way.

You definitely don't need a 4x4 to go in back, I've seen 2x's with sufficient clearance all the way around the back side past the mine before. However I've also seen a couple really struggle to climb the hills to get out when it's time to leave. Especially that steep downhill about 1/4 mile before the turnoff for the mine.

Rallye cars have somewhat low ground clearance, however they have protective plates to keep oil pans and other components from getting bashed.

I've seen minivans and sedans out there before, so it's definitely possible. I wouldn't say it's advisable though. Some of the ruts can get deep enough to high center a car, I've seen and heard it. That unmistakable grinding sound of lower panel skirts and belly pans can result in some damage.

I'm just suggesting that people know their limitations. If you roll in a slammed Civic, post up your plans to go first, I'll bring the lawn chair and some popcorn.

A friend went Saturday, it was busy but open.

With temps over 100 today, it wont be long now till they close it down for fire season!

I called BLM today and they said it is open. We are planning our annual Fathers Day family shoot out there. Never been there though, we used to go to Nichols Rd but I heard they are ticketing. I knew it would happen with all the less than smart that leave crap all over the place. My family always leaves the area cleaner than when we got there.

Good to hear it's still open! The riff raff generally shoot at/near the entrance. If you have a truck/4x4 its well worth it to drive up the hill and continue on the trail then follow the righthander into the backside area. I can tell you that the last Saturday I was there at 7AM and most of the good spots were taken. I was very surprised! Never seen it so busy so early!

Ya, was out there Sunday. Set up at the spot way on the backside about 6:30am and pretty much had the place all to myself until after 7. By 9am there were at least six other groups of shooters out there. I left just before 10am, which is when it was starting to warm up.

The closer I got to the entrance, the more crowded it got. Plenty of peeps out there on Sunday.

I wouldn't be surprised if it closes soon with this heat we're having. I think I'm done for the season. Time to hibernate.

^there you go. They frequently update that page with fire restrictions that would effect Steele peak, also it has the phone number for you to call and ask. When you find out they issued the restriction maybe you can come back and let the rest of us know.
