Default How would Alex Trebek...

...pronounce "Berdan."

Bird-on

Bir-dan

Bir-don

Bear-dahn

Bear-dah

Bear-dough

That guy knows EVERYTHING!

Col. Hiram Berdan was American, so he would pronounce it the way it was spelled. "Bir-dan"

I have struggled with "Garand"

"Gah-rand"
or

"Garrend"
or

"Ga-rond"

John Garand was a French-Canadian by birth, so I initially pronounced it as the latter.

And then wiki weighs in on the matter:

Pronunciation of the name Garand is often disputed, being pronounced variably as /ɡəˈrænd/ or /ˈɡærənd/. Descendants of John Garand and his close friend Julian Hatcher generally agree that it is the latter, rhyming approximately 'errand.'
