Default Thinking about selling my M-1 Carbine

I have a 1943 Underwood with updated bayonet lug and rear sight. I am the second owners since it left Rock river Armory back in the 50's as part of the DCM (got the shipping docs still with it). I am contimplating taking it and selling it at the Costa mesa gunshow but am unsure if it is worth the trouble to take it as I expect to get lowballed like it is cool.

What say you all, if I decide to sell it just put it on gunbroker or here, or take it to the show to see what I get offered?

Also what do you all consider a fair starting price, gunbroker is out of control right now

Gotta post a pic of it, the rifle is just resting on the bipods, no mods done LOL

My thoughts ........ if you offer it to a dealer maybe $400 - $450 +/-
Samco Global just had some for $599.00 but I would rate those mostly toward the lower end on the quality scale. For yours being a typical mixmaster but with DMC papers I would guess anywhere from $700 to $800.

For me it would be a poor time of the year to try buy something with the holidays coming. The other half would not be pleased if I spend HER christmas funds

If you make it to the Costa Mesa show on Saturday stop by the Calguns booth and say hi and get a Calguns sticker I think the booth will be in the left hall when you walk in and on the left wall.

I have been thinking of getting one, I have been looking for a deal also but I would like to see yours.

I wouldnt even think about the 1st price, and the 700-800 price is around what I paid back in the day.

The only reason why I think it was released from service is because it still has the original push button safety.

If you look over at the CMP forums there are a couple of rifles there in the $1000+ price range but they sit ......... a .......... long .......... time, and maybe they sell and maybe not. The ones that do sell are in the $700 - $800 range. The DMC paper would add some value but the push safety not so much.

If the OP really wants top dollar I would go with GunBroker.

If you want top dollar, you should do a data sheet on the parts and find out exactly what you have.

When I saw the incorrect, mis matched parts described as "updated" I knew fair meant top dollar lol. I wouldnt even bother taking it to the show, the venders will have carbines in the $700-$800 range and nobody at the show will be willing to spend over the average $7-$800 range. Gunbroker always has the top prices. If you do go with gunbroker dont call them updated, its a red flag for some collectors. Example being was the stock "fixed" by adding varnish to it, was the worn metal cold blued... Looks like a nice honest rifle good luck with it.

My thought is that before we can quote a price on this Underwood, the condition and originality need to be determined. I can't comment on either because the carbine is not in front of me to do a build sheet on it. If its a 1943 Underwood in the serial number range of 1,350,000 to 1,449,999 (covers those made between Nov. '42 and July '43), then I believe it should have:
Rear Sight = a Type 1 (yours currently has a Type 2 or 3).
Bolt = Should have a flat Type 1
Barrel = should be an "Underwood" barrel
Firing pin = should be a Type 1
Gas piston = should be a Type 1
Barrel band = should be a Type 1A (yours sports a later arsenal replacement)
Operating Slide = should be a Type 2
Trigger Housing = Should be a Type 1, 2, or 3.
Hammer = should be a Type 1 or 2
Magazine catch = should be a Type 1A or Type 2A
Stock should be a Type 1 or Type 2. Both of these would have the "UEF/GHD in a box cartouche on the side of the stock. If not, its a replacement.
Hand guard = should be a Type 1 or 2 depending on rifle serial number. Yours currently appears to have a Type 3.
Those are most, but not all of the things to examine to determine if the carbine is correct for your carbine serial number at the time of production, or a mixmaster from an arsenal rebuild. I'd agree with some of the folks above with the $700-$800 range, unless the carbine was an all "correct" 1943 Underwood piece, at which point I'd double that dollar amount. And again, condition would need to be considered. But the bottom line is that you have a nice carbine!

serial # is 13765XX
Rear Sight = Type 2
Bolt = flat Type 1
Barrel = Underwood" barrel marked 2-43
Bayonet lug is marked AI
Stock is marked RIA/EB with the crossed cannons on the right side, left side in sling notch is marked JLB, looks to be a type 3
safety has NS on it,type 2
Mag release has a M, type 3 or 4

will have to pull out my M-1 carbines book and look at it again, been a while

I know this one aint 100% matching, but it isnt a total mixmaster either.

I wont play the trade/scrounge parts game to make it "more correct" as some do on other websites. Thats just dishonest

Looked at the releasing paperwork, it is DD form 1348-1 with a form date of 1 Aug 61. it was released from Red River Army Depot, Texarkana Texas to a man in the family I bought it from in Ft Worth Texas
Cant find a actual date on the doc, looks like they were using a julian date of 216.
Sold for $20 dollars back then LOL

The fact that you have that paperwork is a plus for many buyers.

People pay a premium for old DCM rifles over the CMP rifles.

Yes but, this fella is looking for TOP dollar. This ones a mix master with a few correct parts. This ones a semi correct. I would just start advertising this rifle every where you can in the $2-$3000 range. People will start talking about it posting links to it and you may find a guy looking for a semi correct to fill a gap in a semi correct collection and offer an amount you like. Good luck.

Well the OP has the right to ask anything he wants for his rifle. The ONLY thing he has going for that rifle vs. any other arsenal or CMP rifle is the DMC paperwork. There really isn't enough posted info to really tell how "correct" this rifle might be , BUT like most rifles that have been arsenal rebuilt , few original parts remain.

The rebuild process is a lot like a sausage grinder. Rifles go in one end and get completely taken apart and the parts where tossed in bins for inspection / rework. The rifle receiver and barrel where inspected / reworked and then the rifle was reassembled with parts that had already been inspected / reworked. The odds of having all the correct original parts go back into a rifle are just about zero.

Just so you are Tracking I sold it for $900 including some mag rebuild kits. I wont name the Buyer LOL, if the Buyer wants to talk about it it is on him. I wasnt looking for "TOP" dollar, otherwise I would have listed it for 1200-ish like I saw at the CM gunshow.

You are the seller right?

Kidding aside. I am the buyer and the OP was wonderful to work with and did in fact give me, what I feel, was a very good deal. And the rifle looks better than any of our piddly pictures can show.

Thanks again!
