Default From Russia with Love (SKS)

This is my Russian SKS. Manufactured at the Tula Arsenal in 1953. Tula is about 154 miles south of Moscow. All numbers match on this rifle and it is NOT a Russian refurbishment. The "refurbished" SKS rifle by Russia will have a marking of a square box with a slash from opposite corners within the box. And the other way to identify a Russian refurbish is that the receiver cover and bolt/handle will be "black". This rifle is all original. Lock, stock and barrel.

It looks nice, but it's not "original" someone stripped the original shellac finish which was on the stock and applied a clear finish of some sort. Ruined the rifles collector value.

Just my opinion but, it looks original to me. How can you tell that it is not the original finish? I'm no guru on finished rifles. In the meantime I think it looks really good.

Because the Soviets did not use a shiny clear finish on their hard wood SKS rifle stocks. ALL had a dark iodine colored shellac. The laminated rifles had a lighter finish, however it was not shiny and clear as is the finish on this rifle.

Compare the finish on the four hardwood rifles below. All as issued.

The blond wood shows through the dark stain and gives the rifles the red mottled look. In addition some of the stock markings were applied AFTER the stocks were finished. The markings are on top of the finish. Refinished stocks will have all the finish on top of the markings

Original laminated Soviet rifles. A lighter finish, however not shiny.

I'm not trying to crap on jarheads rifle. He just likes to refinish them. I'm just pointing out what is original and what is not so others here don't get any incorrect ideas as to what finish was original to these rifles. If you check some of his other posts you can see all his SKS type rifles get refinished with the same shiny clear finish. Not bad just his style.

Those 6 Russians are perhaps the most beautiful rifles I have ever seen. Are they all yours, SVT?

I've got 2 Russians, one which is refurbished with black BBQ but has an original Tula stock with one support screw, otherwise all matching.

I believe my other is a non-refurb and is also matching. The rifles are so pretty I don't think I can even shoot them.

These seem hard to come by because unbubba'd SKS's (especially Russians) are rarely for sale locally. Perhaps with my inbound FFL 03 I'll be able to grab a few more!

The SKS pron in this thread is due for a bump. Nothing gives me the warm and toasties like a Russian SKS that is original and unbubba'd.

My Russian '55 Tula has been Bubbba'd but I love it anyway, it's a looker. Shoots so nicely too.
