1960's TV Personality Sheriff John passed away yesterday at the age of 93. I watch his show, "Sheriff John's Lunch Brigade" every day.
He had two songs that I will always remember with a smile. The birthday cake song and "Laugh and Be Happy" Rest in Peace, Sheriff John! http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?se...ent&id=8838237

I haven't thought of him in a long time. As a child I loved his show and even went to see him make a live appearance a time or two.
RIP -- and thanks.

Did Sheriff John really chase Hobo Kelly out of
Mr. Rogers' neighborhood?

Having grown up in the 1950s, I too watched Sheriff John everyday, along with my two brothers. We also sang along with him. RIP Sheriff John.

The Big 4 of Los Angeles kid's shows back in the 50's.
Sheriff John with Crusader Rabbit. Skipper Frank with his Bugs Bunny & Porky Pig cartoons. Tom Hatten with his Popeye cartoons & easel. Engineer Bill causing little kids to guzzle down milk with his "red light, green light" game. ![]() Of the four, I think only Tom is still around. I think we had better TV back then. R.I.P. Sheriff John was my hero. I got to meet him backstage at the old KTTV MetroMedia Studios in December of 1983. He had flown in from his home in Boise, ID, to appear on KTTV's 35th Anniversary show that aired on New Year's Day of 1984. He was exactly as he appeared on TV - a kind, down to earth gentleman. I had my picture taken with him, both of us in uniform, and got an autographed photo that proudly hangs on my den wall. I later got to meet up with him at his assisted living facility in Boise in 2009. Still the same Sheriff John.
RIP, Sheriff John. You were one of a kind and an L.A. original. |
