Hey guys, so I received a notice stating that I am scheduled for the written exam for LASD tomorrow. I just want to know what the appropriate attire would be. I am guessing slacks with dress shoes, dress shirt and a tie. Correct if I am wrong please. Thanks guys.

For a large group written test, as I assume this will be. I'd say business casual, nice pants and a button down shirt. You could probably skip the tie but wearing it won't hurt either. The trick is to blend in, and of course do well on the test.

I've pretty much made a rule that if I go to a test, or even just stopping by the station to drop off paper work I am in professional attire. You never know who you may run into and the more people who see you and think "This guy has it together and is a professional' the better.
I've seen some guys show up in wrinked tank top and jeans...

ALWAYS wear a suit to every test and every interview unless told otherwise. When you take your physical agility test, they will tell you what you need to wear. You can NEVER go wrong with a suit. If you do not own a suit, at least wear some type of business attire such as slacks, dress shirt, and tie.
If accepted into the academy, you will be required to wear a suit for the first week or two, so make sure you have one.

I used to wear a full suit and was always the only one that did. Then I realized it really made no difference unless you really looked like a slob. Now I am on the other side and unless the guy rolled up all gangstered out or very sloppy, I don't care as long as he passes the written and everything and goes to the other parts which are actually more important.
I even wore a full suit to the medical exam which made the changing in and out to get the tests done more work than necessary, but that was me in my mid twenties trying to get a job. That being said, it's never wrong to be dressed professionally but you don't have to be in a full suit. Clean shirt, pressed slacks, clean shoes, will do for most occasions. For LASD though, I recommend you get the whole tan/green uniform, and put at least 3 stars on your collars to show you are ambitious and want to do well and stay in the organization. Show them you dress for the job you want.

I took the LASD exam last month, wear business casual or business professional.
You will be surprised at how many people show up in booty shorts, jeans, etc. -_-; Besides, you will be talking to an officer after your exam (if you pass) to go over your personal history briefly. |

Make sure you know it's a DEPUTY you will be talking to, not an OFFICER.

I would assume that you are ALWAYS being evaluated and you should dress accordingly. When I went down for my physical many moons ago they had some guy waiting for a while. He was dressed is flip flops shorts and torn shirt. They kept taking people ahead of him and he got pissed and started *****ing about it (he was there an hour before me). When i went in I heard him "complaining" to the deputy at the front...
After my physical I overheard to of the deputy's say " See I told you that guy is a hot head and couldn't hold his tongue." when i went out the guy was leaving and was *****ing about being kicked out. He still isn't a Deputy today ( although he is a CA and nothing has changed with regard to his attitude). One thing you better get in your head right away on this job. You have to assume you are being watched ( and filmed) every time and every where. |

Dang it, I could have used this advice in 1975 when I applied. I'd ask where you were back then, but you were probably not around or in diapers. ![]() |
