This is probably the most correct answer. My former dept. allowed mustaches, tho they were not supposed to go below the upper lip. Haircuts didn't have to be academy short, but policy did dictate the length. Basically, clean cut. The majority of the deputies who worked custody when I was a sgt. there, wore their hair very short, tho it was not required. That probably had a lot to do with the fact that it wass in style whether in le or not.

Depending what unit they worked, a detective might be able to have long hair, beard, earrings (Narco or biker gangs would be an example).

That might be a tough policy to follow and enforce... and a lot of guys walking funny when the hair starts growing back in certain places.

We are pretty standardized in the SoCal area, I think.

Mustaches must be cleanly groomed and not below lip line.

No beards generally unless on special assignment and approved.

No sideburns, subject to same rules above.

Haircuts must be clean and neat and not present an image contrary to department uniform standards... which is widely interpreted and I have never run afoul of it as I keep mine high and tight and never longer than Air Force medium.

Hair dye is allowed, as long as it is in a naturally occurring color. No purple or blue or plaid, etc. One guy colored it a brilliant red... almost orange once... but it was natural enough to pass muster, I guess. Didn't last too long though, his hair all fell out in short order so he just shaved it bald.

As for Baconator's no body hair or armpit hair... that's a toughie.

Totally depends on the agency. One place I worked required mustaches not extend past the corners of the mouth and sideburns not below the top of the ear opening, and no other facial hair, period. Another place we could wear full, well trimmed beards on patrol if we wanted. A couple guys pushed that into goatees and the chief didn't say anything.

I've heard of people getting waivers from thier doctors if they have issues with shaving(breaking out, or major ingrown hair issue) Is there any truth to this rumor I've heard?

Or first time you're written up for having powdered sugar all over your beard.
