Default Sportsman Channel- Guns & Ammo TV: Caliber and firearm choices for women 9/10

I usually don't post in this part of the forum, but.....

Tonight on the Sportsman Channel ( 605 for DirecTV) the show Guns & Ammo is going to review firearm and caliber choices for women that are choosing their first defensive gun.

Ok, I watched it ( will be on again @ 8pm) but it was them talking for like 2 mins about the topic. Very disappointed as my GF and I are looking at guns for her.

Perhaps im just nuts, but what difference is the criterion for a defensive weapon between the sexes?

A man can only shoot a pistol well which fits his hand and has a caliber he's capable of accurately shooting. He is not exempt from the requirement that his gear must fit his body, just like it does for a woman. As such I find the division implied in "guns and advice for women" somewhat unnecessary. After all a bad guy's spine doesn't care that the bullet which severed it was launched from a gun held by a woman.

DavidR-
My wife is left handed and cross eye dominant. After shooting several guns at the range she decided in a Glock 19. I prefer XD so I am not a Glock fan boy, but definitely include the Glock 19, S&W M&P 9, and XD 9 in your possibilities list.

David, check with me on this. I'm left handed and right-eyed, so I may be able to help.

I'm not sure there's any real difference between men's gun selection and women's except hand size. That's a real, actual thing, esp if a woman has small hands.

Most of the difference comes from some women having an idea that they "can't handle too big a gun", which they can un-learn by experiencing it. But they gotta change their own make model and calibre.

Where the rubber really meets the road for women is CCW, I think. I'm struggling with that myself.

Yeah, I am trying to figure out why my money is not as good as a man's money. Same thing in motorcycles. I went in to buy a tire lock for my Ninja 250 to Mach 1 in Vallejo and got some head-up-his-*** salesman who approached me the "Whatcha lookin' for little lady?" Mistake number 1, Don't "little lady" me. I told him I needed a tire lock for a bike and he said "Well what's your husband ride?" I said "An R1, but it's for my bike. Ninja 250" He says "We don't carry anything for bikes that small" Ummmm, you sell a Honda Rebel and a Honda 125 and rims are rims and tires are tires. I thanked him, went to Fairfield, bought my tire lock and sent Mach 1 a letter with an itemized list of things and bikes(6) that my husband have bought from their competitor due to the ****ty service I got.

Good for you Bugguts!!!! Love that story. I hope in my lifetime, some men will change. Cars, guns, motorcycles - such a man's world or so they think

My father died relatively young in 1991. Mom was left with two large cars - wanted to get rid of both and get a smaller car. I drove a Ford (Found On Road Dead) Taurus for 24 years....a company car, got a new one every two years and the majority of them stayed in the shop more than I had them on the road..... I had no love for them. She wanted to try one anyway. She test drove it, liked it (help me Lord) and then that stupid car sales dance started. In comes the manager, the biggest bellied bubba I had seen in long time. He said the Taurus would cost 24,000 - please note above what year it was. I sat there, laughed and said the cost is 16,000. His words - then you will have to look at the Ford escort for that kind of money.......Seriously?????? The cheapest piece of caca Ford has every made. He was serious. Now I was serious.

I looked at my mother, told her to get her purse, stood up and said, "Tell ya what Bud, we are going across town and we will get her a fully loaded Toyota Camry for 16,000 which will actually last for years unlike your Taurus that will break down every three months. Bud's face got a little red and he said, well, good luck with that price. I gave him a thumbs up and told him I would let him know. My little sweet mother said , as we got into the car, did you insult him? Not anymore than he insulted me Mom. lol

Got to Toyota, Mom drove and loved it and while we were in the car, I asked Carl, what is the price......$19,000. Carl, I have a problem with that price since my friend bought the same car here last week for 16,000. If we have that deal, we will go inside and fill out the paper work. (I didn't have a friend buy a camry LOL ) Three hours later, I called Bud at Ford and said, guess what Bud? Hear that sound of jaggling keys - that is a brand new $16,000 Camery LE - fully loaded. I will be sure to recommend you to ALL of my friends. Click

Now my own story. Four years ago, I went to buy a new 2009 Santa Fe SUV - Did my homework - blue book, black book etc etc. Because of false advertising, I took a 45 minutes drive to this dealership. After saying how po'd I was at their less than truthful advertising, I started looking around. Saw the one I wanted and then the car dealership water boarding began - offer it to me for $5,000 over what it was worth. Not going to pay that son. But it is a good price. No it isn't!!!!He scratches out the price and and took off $1,000. I looked at him and said, ya know, I am tired, it's dark so I am going home. I will call you tomorrow. He scratched another $1,000 off and threw in a couple of accessories. By this time, I was not only feeling tired but sick tired and I said I was leaving. He finally said, what will it take to get your business? The trap had been set. I wasn't tired or sick lol. I want you to come down another $3,000 and just because your advertising was bordering on false advertising and I drove 45 minutes to get here, I want 20 inch wheels on it. If you can't do that, I am out of here. Two hours later, I was leaving with the price I wanted, accessories and 20 inch wheels.

Don't get on my bad side boys - that is the only side I have left after dealing with you on cars, guns and anything else you think you can pull on a woman. I got cha ya number and I am smarter than you. I have to be. The end. lol

Apparently women's hard earned money is pink, or smells of Chanel, or pheromones or something...

ATTENTION RETAILERS: Educate your people on the idea that women have their own money and spend their own money on their own stuff !!! Or the competition wins.

I go through this all the time. I learned to scuba at 35, learned to ride and bought my first motorcycle at 45 and will have my CCW at 65. God knows what I'll be up to at 80, but I guarantee it won't be shuffleboard.

The guys in the local gun stores and ranges have been very nice and respectful and they know I can write a four figure check without blinking. The little boys in Wally world on the other hand, are a whole other topic and want to know if my son is there to carry my ammo. I just lay in the weeds and smile a like crocodiles do.

I'm generally a nice middle-class, middle-aged, kinda harmless looking lady, but believe me, I don't hesitate to blister people who make assumptions about what I do and what I can buy.

Before I was with DH, I went car shopping. There were two next to each other that were identical except for the transmission. I pointed to the manual transmission car and asked to test drive it. He kept trying to push me into the automatic. When I resisted he said (condescendingly), "Well, that car is a 5 speed, can you drive a standard, honey?"

I looked him dead in the eye and said (sarcastically), "No, I thought I'd learn on yours". (I've been driving a manual transmission since I was 14)

I bought elsewhere.

LOL! i have company, its not just me!

my forte is buying used cars/trucks: learned from my dad and my husband appreciates my ability to sniff out the good ones and get them for a fair price.

i echo that men need to figure out that women will pay for quality and service. i know what i want. don't tell me what i should want just 'cause i'm a woman and a woman of a certain age.

guys complain that there aren't enough women into guns but when i walk into a gun shop and getting ignored or talked down to suffice it to say i'm not going to buy my gun there.

eta: neighbor had the main road out blocked so i couldn't get my car out and i had an appointment. so i asked to borrow one of his cars on the other side of the road block. he says i can take the minicooper but its a manual with 6-speeds and implied i didn't know how to drive one....my response? its my husband that can't drive a stick, not me. ended up with the minicooper all day. fun car.

That's why I love DAS. They're friendly, knowledgable, and I didn't have to ask to see guns, they just kept handing them to me.

Curious confluence of interests here, the Shooting Wire just had an article, sort of on this topic.

http://www.shootingwire.com/features/226438

I point it out only because it refers to two of my passions; the shooting sports and... WOMEN'S ROLLER DERBY!

Shooting, 'cause, well duh, and derby, 'cause my lovely 5' 11" wife (who enjoys shooting the M1A more than any of our rifles) skates for the Oakland Outlaws.

Thank you Chris for the article. Finally some sanity in print. As for Roller Derby, when I was a child, I spent every weekend with my favorite aunt - we had to watch 3 things, Gunsmoke (loved the guns lol), Lawerence Welk, and Roller Derby. I think this was the right name for this women's team - Bay City Bombers - I loved that team! They had one woman on there who could toss women 20 ft off the rail. lol Don't mess with these women, they will take you down.

Btw - my first gun was a 357 - my own choice. Ka boom. It was a great gun - I don't think I have ever shot a 22 - no need to start now.

Well not to get any more off topic, but if any y'all are interested the B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls league is hosting 2012 Western Nationals in Richmond, later this month and it's going to be three days of ridiculously awesome derby action.
